John was sent for in 1693 by his uncle Thomas Sisom. He settled in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, PA when he came over with his brothers William, Thomas and George who were all supposedly Quakers. John however, married at Christ Church in Philadelphia. He was Presbyterian when he married Mary Heale. A street was named after this John Coates in Philadelphia. He is listed as John Cotes Jr. when he was executor for his brother William's estate. That might mean that their father's name was John or that there was another older John living in the area at the same time. (Colonial Families of PA: E) He might be the John Coate who attended the wedding of Daniel Mickle and Hannah Dennis of Newton Twp. on the 1 mo 27 day, 1711. (C-1,1680) He purchased a 3 acre brickyard in 1719 in Philadelphia just like his brothers, Thomas and William did. He helped administer his brother, William Sr.'s estate in 1749. (C-1665) This John Coates along with Thomas Shute owned 4 tenements on 2nd Street in Philadelphia that they were renting out for 6 pounds, 10 shillings annually in the American Weekly Mercury dated Thursday August 23, to Thursday August 30, 1739. He is likely the John Coates Jr. who donated 15 pounds for the establishment of a hospital in Philadelphia which was reported on May 29, 1755 in the Pennsylvania Gazette. His will was written in 1754 and probated in 1760, which lists a large number of children. His wife was apparently deceased by that time. He and Rebekka are listed as having a daughter Mary in 1741 in the birth records, but he wasn't listed as marrying until 1745. The 1745 marriage did not include the name of his wife. All other children were born after his marriage. The 1741 birth is recorded as the daughter of Warwick and Rebekka also. Warwick was a shipwright of Moyamensing, Pennsylvania. Warwick was described as living near James Keappock on Society Hill in Philadelphia, PA when he was helping rent a new 3 story home in the same place. He is likely the Warwick Coates who donated 5 pounds for the establishment of a hospital in Philadelphia which was reported on May 29, 1755 in the Pennsylvania Gazette. He, James Keappock and Richard Dennis were trying to rent a 3 story house with 2 large kitchens on Dec. 30, 1756 in this same newspaper. Warwick apparently had a son who died on Nov 2, 1758. Isaac was the executor for John Sr.'s will in which it becomes apparent that John Sr. lived on land adjoining Abraham Coats. It is conjecture on my part, that they are all brothers because his children have the same names. He is listed as a Brickmaker which supports him being related to the Northern Liberties families that were descendants of Joan Sisom Coates that were brickmakers. Isaac Coates and Manuel Eyre were John's executors. (C-1756) Isaac likely had quite a few more children as he could have been old enough to have children in 1735 and he still had an underage daughter when he wrote his will in 1786.

In the PA Gazette on Mar 25 1762, three lots are listed as for rent by Robert Knox or Abraham Coates. One of them is near Abraham's Tanyard on the East side of Front Street and one of them abutts William Coate's lot on the West side of Fronts Street in Northern Liberties (now a part of Philadelphia). The closeness with which Abraham and William owned property suggests a relationship between the two to me. Of course, there are multiple William Coates living in Philadelphia at this date, so we are not yet sure which William is being referred to. (C-1784) It should also be noted that this Abraham named his oldest son, William. In another PA Gazette dated Aug. 19, 1762, John Coates, Sr's, deceased, two lots were being sold off. The first was located on Front Street between Arch St. and Bank Meeting house. The second was located on an alley called George's Alley commonly called Coates Alley between Front and Second Street and bounded on the west side by Abraham Coats. John Sr.'s executive was Isaac Coates. (C-1756, 1757) Abraham seems to be listed as Abram Coats who is the executor along with his brother Warwick of Richard Jr. Wright's (their brother-in-law) will in 1748/9 in Philadelphia. Abraham again is listed as Abram Coates when he helped execute Isaac Dutton's will in Philadelphia on Mar 2, 1761. A negroe man, tanner by trade and a negroe woman, about age 45 were to be sold. The executors of his estate were Susannah Coates, Eamuel Aires and Isaac Snowden. Mary is listed as the daughter of Warwick and Rebekka in her birth and baptismal record. However, since Warwick and Rebekka did not marry until 1745 and Warwick was married to a Mary in 1741, I find it much more likely that Mary was the d. of Warwick and Mary instead. Since she wasn't baptized till after Warwicks second marriage, I conjecture that his second wife was listed in both records because of that. (C-1685) In "Colonial and Revolutionary Familes of PA," Mary is listed as one of the most gifted and beautiful women of her day. Her husband died when her daughter was 11. A few years later, when she knew she was dying of an incurable disease, she arranged for her only daughter's marriage at the young age of 15 to Benjamin Hutton. She died just two weeks after their marriage when she knew her daughter was safely cared for. (E)

In July 1777 he could have been the John who was on the Philadelphia militia rolls, 6th Battalion, Capt. Mash's Co., indicating he served his tour.

It is conjecture that this Warwick is the brother of William and son of an older Warwick and his first wife. It simply fits by time and place at this point in the theory building. His wife is named Sarah in the sources for Pennsylvania (C-1677) There is a Warwick who married a Sarah Kelly on May 11, 1777 in Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA that is unaccounted for. (C-1680) The Warwick and Sarah who are listed as the parents of William Coate born 1773, don't seem to fit this 1777 marriage. He is likely the Warwick listed as a Shipwright in the Provincial Tax rolls of Philadelphia Co. in 1774. He is in a 1798 Philadelphia City Directory as a shipwright, living at 24 Queen St. (C-1983) This might be the Warwick whose estate was administered in 1799 in Philadelphia in Book K, p. 26. William who died in Northern Liberties, in his will he names cousin Warwick Jr. Coates, son of Warwick Coats. Since all the other Williams in this branch of the family are spoken for, I am guessing that he is the son of John Sr. Coats to make him a 1st cousin to Warwick Coats, son of Warwick. Timing, place and relationship to Warwick fit these facts. His will transcription by Charlotte Coats Sierks follows: PA Will Book R, p. 329 #264 William Coate, of the Loures Keys of Northern Liberties, County of Penn, Sadler, wife Martha Coats daughter Sarah, attains to the age of eighteen years, sister Rachel Hartley, Warrick Coate as executor, signed Sept 11, 1779, witnesses Josh Caunias, Isaac Coats, Peter Thomas, probate Jan 28, 1780. If this is his will, then his son George likely died before the making of his will. It is complete conjecture on my part that the William Coats who married a Martha (Pricket) and his possible sister Mary Chinoth is the William who is the brother of John, Abraham, and Isaac. I base this theory on the following reasons. 1) Abraham also lived in Northern Liberties, a region in the city of Philadelphia. 2) Abraham had a brother William of the correct age to be this William. 3) William's wife Martha, lived in Northern Liberties according to his will.

William wrote his will in Kingwood (formerly Bethlehem Twp.,) Hunterdon Co., NJ in 1775. He had married a Jane Dupuy 3 weeks before making this will in which he named his grown children. He moved to Philadelphia, PA shortly after where his children by Jane were supposedly born. He is listed as a tanner of Northern Liberties, Philadelphia in his father-in-law's will written in 1793. He also owned land in Tinicum, Bucks Co., PA which is where he died in 1795. His estate included much land in both the last two places.

Isaac was possibly married in the same church, Christ Church, as his parents on Aug 4, 1788 to Mary Eyres. If so wife was his first cousin, once removed. Their common ancestor was John Coats and Mary Hale. Anne Mayea, a descendant, has a 1900's family tree that lists this Isaac as the son of John and Mary Hale Coats instead which would make he and his wife first cousins and of the same generation. Isaac wrote a will in 1790 (U, p. 49).

In that will he names his wife Mary, daughter Harriet and father-in-law, Manuel Eyre. He, himself, is listed as a carpenter. (C-1680, 1686, E) Isaac was also the likely witness in the following record: PA Will Book W page 130, Will of Mary Dutton-1786 she signed it - probated in 1791, she had land that bordered Coates Street-and Coates Alley-this is the Northern Liberties area, daughters Mary Eyres; Sarah - she also referes to a daughter Mary Lydia Eyres; Sarah Browne;-later she referes to her three beloved children, Mary, Lydia and Sarah; Witnesses Isaac Coats, Charles Bonnell and R. Whitehead. "The Pennsylvania Genealogical Catalogue: Chester County 1809-1870": February 7, 1860, VILLAGE RECORD, Death Notice: On the 1st of 2d mo., 1860, at his residence in Londonderry township, WARRICK COATES, Sr., aged 80 years and 3 days. He had resided in that township, near 60 years.

Peter Sonmans, M.D., b 23d August, 1765; graduated from the Medical Department of the University of PA, 1786; m. 15th Nov. 1787, Sarah Coats, dau. of William and Martha Coats, and a member of the prominent family of that name who were large landowners in Philadelphia at a very early date, and for whom Coats Street, now Fairmount Avenue, was named. Dr. Gloentworth d. at Philadelphia, 2d October, 1793.
