1. | ![]() Notes: Johannis or John in English married in Alne. He had at least 3 of his children in Alne. He probably is the John Coates who died in 1669 in Stokesley. Stokesly is 30 miles north of Alne. Thirsk where his possible son John had children was halfway in between the two. John might have originally been from Stokesley as there were Cootes families there in the 1580's as attested by the following frereg.org.uk record. Johannis married Anna FIRRYMAN on 16 Oct 1627 in Alne, York, England. Anna was born before 1611 in of Alne, North Riding, Yorkshire, England; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

4. | ![]() ![]() Notes: This Coats male has been in controversary since his descendants forgot his name. I started my search to find his name by checking all the sources for the prevailing theories of William, Thomas and James. All of them were 2nd hand records. In my quest to find proof, I first decided to find Mr. Coats wife, Joan Sisom and her brother Thomas. I theorized that Mr. Coates would likely be of the same place. I also had one other clue. Her sons, Thomas, William and George had each attended some Quaker meetings. Johannis married Joan\Jane\Jeane SISOM on 8 May 1664 in York M.M., Yorkshire, England. Joan\Jane\Jeane (daughter of Richard SISSON and Jona DEWES) was born in Sep 1634 in Allerton Mauleverer, Yorkshire, England; was christened on 13 Nov 1679 in Bolton upon Swale, Yorkshire, England; died before 23 Apr 1729 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. 8. | COATS ![]() Notes: Thomas is not listed with the rest of his siblings in the England and Wales Birth, Marriage and Death Records at archives.com. However, he is likely accounted for in the England and Wales Non-Conformist Records at familysearch.org as an unknown child of John Coats of Thirsk, Yorkshire, England born in 1670. Apparently the original was to hard for them to index. We know from his mother's will that his name was Thomas. Philadelphia Quaker records give his age as 90 when he died in 1760. This is almost right. He would have been about 91 in reality from English records. |

(C-1006) William married Mary SMITH in 25th da 8th mo 1706 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. 20. | ![]() ![]() Notes: He might be the William Coates who had a public wharf built next to his home that was on a road that led from Philadelphia to Germantown and Frankfort. Notice of this action was in the Pennsylvania Gazette on Apr. 2, 1747. William Jr. left a will in book J, p. 101, Philadelphia, PA on Feb. 26, 1746. It's been transcribed by Charlotte Coats Siercks: LDS # 21724 "No. 63 - William Coats, jr, city of Philadelphia, brickmakerwife Mary, daugher Mary, son William, both children it appears are under 21 years of age since both bequests are to *delievered unto him by my said Exers when he arrives to ye age of Twenty one years*, my truly Friends as executers Thomas Jay, Sadler and John Coats, brickmaker (his uncle or cousin). It also appears that William Coats', jr father dies after him, his father's name is also William Coats...jr... : 'my will is that my said executers in one year after the decease of my father William Coats do pay or cause to be paid unto my wife Mary Coats the sum of Ten pounds', witnesses William Wallace and Stephen Hooley. The will was signed Feb 26, 1746, probated April 7, 1749" (C-2388) He or his father might have been the William who purchased a lot in Northern Liberties, PA in 1734. (C-1665, 1670) He might be the William Coates who owned a house on the west side of the road leading from Philadelphia to Germantown on Apr. 2, 1747. A public Wharf was to be built on the adjacent property to it. (C-1747) He is possibly the William who forbade all persons to trust his wife in the Sep 11, 1746 PA Gazette. "For her will pay no Debts by her contracted, from the Date hereof. William Coates." (C-1742) He and his father died at almost the same time. On April 13, 1748/1749, all persons indebted to the estate of William Cotes, Sr., and William Coats, Jr. late of Northern Liberties, brickmakers, deceased were asked to pay their respective debts in the PA Gazette. In the same article it then announces the publick sale of William Jr.'s estate on the 29th of April. It included his house, one negroe male, two horses, one mare, one cow, a small cart, one chair, and sundry household items. Executors appeared to be Thomas Say and John Cotes, Jr. (C-1813) William married Mary UNKNOWN before 1741. Mary died after 1748. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

24. | ![]() ![]() Notes: He and Rebekka are listed as having a daughter Mary in 1741 in the birth records, but he wasn't listed as marrying until 1745. The 1745 marriage did not include the name of his wife. All other children were born after his marriage. The 1741 birth is recorded as the daughter of Warwick and Rebekka also. Warwick was a shipwright of Moyamensing, Pennsylvania. Warwick was described as living near James Keappock on Society Hill in Philadelphia, PA when he was helping rent a new 3 story home in the same place. He is likely the Warwick Coates who donated 5 pounds for the establishment of a hospital in Philadelphia which was reported on May 29, 1755 in the Pennsylvania Gazette. He, James Keappock and Richard Dennis were trying to rent a 3 story house with 2 large kitchens on Dec. 30, 1756 in this same newspaper. Warwick apparently had a son who died on Nov 2, 1758. He was not named. (C-1685) He or his son Warwick were in the 1769 Proprietary Tax rolls in Southwark Districk, Philadelphia Co. owning 1 cow and 2 servants. His will dated 1782 is in book S, p. 72 in Philadelphia Co. (C-1665, 1749) He was a Revolutionary War Soldier as depicted in the following DAR index. 25. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Isaac was the executor for John Sr.'s will in which it becomes apparent that John Sr. lived on land adjoining Abraham Coats. It is conjecture on my part, that they are all brothers because his children have the same names. He is listed as a Brickmaker which supports him being related to the Northern Liberties families that were descendants of Joan Sisom Coates that were brickmakers. Isaac Coates and Manuel Eyre were John's executors. (C-1756) Isaac likely had quite a few more children as he could have been old enough to have children in 1735 and he still had an underage daughter when he wrote his will in 1786. 27. | ![]() ![]() Notes: In the PA Gazette on Mar 25 1762, three lots are listed as for rent by Robert Knox or Abraham Coates. One of them is near Abraham's Tanyard on the East side of Front Street and one of them abutts William Coate's lot on the West side of Fronts Street in Northern Liberties (now a part of Philadelphia). The closeness with which Abraham and William owned property suggests a relationship between the two to me. Of course, there are multiple William Coates living in Philadelphia at this date, so we are not yet sure which William is being referred to. (C-1784) It should also be noted that this Abraham named his oldest son, William. In another PA Gazette dated Aug. 19, 1762, John Coates, Sr's, deceased, two lots were being sold off. The first was located on Front Street between Arch St. and Bank Meeting house. The second was located on an alley called George's Alley commonly called Coates Alley between Front and Second Street and bounded on the west side by Abraham Coats. John Sr.'s executive was Isaac Coates. (C-1756, 1757) Abraham seems to be listed as Abram Coats who is the executor along with his brother Warwick of Richard Jr. Wright's (their brother-in-law) will in 1748/9 in Philadelphia. Abraham again is listed as Abram Coates when he helped execute Isaac Dutton's will in Philadelphia on Mar 2, 1761.
