Notes:

William is listed as a Yeoman meaning he was a farmer by trade, in his will. He gave his wife the use of his plantation given to him by his father Mamaduke. He names all his children. After his death, each of his sons, except Barzilla, died without issue (children) as attested to in a 178(7) Hunterdon Co., NJ deed. (C-1078) He is listed as a twin of sister Ann and born on 7/29/1703 in a transcribed copy of Somerset Co., ENG records that needs verified with the original birth record. (C-1519c)

He and his parents and sisters, Edith and Hannah attended the wedding of his father's former servant to Marmaduke Coate named Elloner Oustlon/Oussor to Jacob Garwood when he was 18 years of age. (C-2571) He and his wife witnessed the marriage of Michael Newbold and Susanah Scholey in Springfield Twp., NJ on Feb 15, 1730. He is likely the William who was listed as a bondsman in the estate of Ab. Porter of Gloucester Co., NJ in 1748. (C-1, p. 167) He is also likely to be the William Coate whose heirs owned a block of land adjoining Lambert Barnes and Thomas Powell's property in the city of Burlington which was located on High Street. His will is provided on Charlotte Coats Siercks website. Will of William Coate (transcribed will) To all to whom those present shall come I, WILLIAM COATE of the Township of Williamborough in the county of Burlington and Province of New Jersey- yeoman-being sick and weak in body but of a sound mind and disposing memory thanks be given unto the Almighty Being for the same and for all other his mercies do make and ordain this by my last will and testament in manner and form-Following that is do say. First and principally I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it me and my body to the earth to be desently buried at the discretion of my executors herein after named and as touching the disposition of all such worldly wealth as it hath pleased God to less me with this world. I, give devise and bequeath the same as follows vis-My will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses be justly and truly discharged by my executors herein after mentioned. Item-I, give and devise all and singular my said plantation where on I now dwell in the township aforesaid with appurtanances unto my two sons, to wit=ISRAEL and BARZILLA and to their heirs and assigns when the said Barzilla shall arrive to the age of twenty-one years as aforesaid-to be equally divided between them in quantity and quality by my executors here in after named or the major part if them or the survivors of them-to have and to hold my said plantation unto my said two sons Isreal and Barzilla and their heirs and assigns forever not as joint tenants but as tenants in common. Item-I, give and devise unto my loving wife the use of all my plantation with appurtanances, where on I, now dwell in the Township of Williamborough to hold to my said wife until my son Barzilla shall arrive to the age of twenty-one years. Item - I give and devise unto my two sons Marmaduke and William Coate and to their heirs and assigns all that my plantation situate lying and being in town of Hanover in the County of Burlington, which was given me by my father, to be equally divided between my two sons to wit- Marmaduke and William in quality and quantity by my executors herein after named or the major part of them or the survivor of them. To have and to hold my said plantation unto my said two sons Marmaduke and William and to their heirs and assigns forever as tenants in common and not as joint tenants- And whereas by said words in my father, Marmaduke Coate's will there seems some doubt whether the said plantation before given to my sons Marmaduke and William be not entailed and in case it should appear to be entailed and that my son Marmaduke should insist on and be entailed by law to hold the whole of the said plantation in Township of Hanover aforesaid by virtue of those words in my father's Will aforesaid them I such case and not otherwise, I give and devise unto my said son William and to his heirs and assigns forever a piece of Meadow ground situated lying I the Township of Springforth near Mount which I purchased of Johnathan Wright and containing about twenty-eight acres and I also give and devise unto my son William on condition aforesaid and his heirs and assigns forever my house and lot of ground in the city of Burlington with the Appurtenance-to have and to hold the said piece of Meadow ground and the said house and lot of ground in the city of Burlington aforesaid unto my said son Marmaduke and his heirs and assigns forever perpetually and always and it is my intent and meaning that if my said son William shall hold and enjoy the major or half part of my plantation before given him in the Township of Hanover-That is my meaning that if my said son William shall hold and enjoy the major or half ground in Springfield aforesaid and the house and lot of ground in the city of Burlington aforesaid to be void and no effects and be and remain as if the said had not been given to my said William. He died without having any children according to a deed transaction between his brother Barzilla and his sisters dated 1783 in Hunterdon Co., NJ. According to that deed all of his brothers except Barzilla, died without issue by 1783. The sisters ending up getting money for their deceased brothers lands. A William Jr. Coats died the same year as William Sr. in 1749. This could apply to this William and most certainly applies to William the spouse of Rebecca Sharp. (C-1665) If the William Jr. who dies in 1749 is this William, then we don't know who the following record belongs to: "A William is mentioned in the inventory of the estate of Robert Hartshorne of Burlington on Jun 27, 1752. Barzillai Coate (as spelled in the PA Gazette, Apr 9, 1777) and Charles French advertised their services as proper caretakers and creators of good posture for mares (female horses) at five shillings per week. (C-1765) Barzilla is on the Burlington Co., NJ Tax list for 1773 in Evesham Twp. (C-2292E) He and his wife and children, Hannah, William and Edith COATE were granted a certificate from Burlington Monthly Meeting to Evesham M.M. on 1774, 9, 5 according to Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia. The certificate was from Burlington Monthly Meeting; both meetings were/are in Burlington County, NJ.

There was an indenture placed in the New Jersey Court Records by the sisters of Barzilla to obtain shares of their brothers land inherited by the deceased William Coate. It proves that William and Rebecca's sons William, Marmaduke and Israel died without children. It is transcribed below."This Indenture made this third day of May in the year of our Lord-One thousand seven hundred and eighty three Between Anne Atkinson, Widow of Samuel Atkinson, late of the Township of Chest(view), the County of Burlington, deceased, William West of Main(tholly) in the said County and Hannah his wife, Joseph Burr of New Hanover in the said County and Rachel his Wife, Joseph Ridgeway of the Township of (Springfield) in the said County sometime the husband of Mary Ridgeway formerly Mary Coate, John Ridgeway of Springfield afs. and Beulah his Wife, which said Ann Atkinson, Hannah West, Rachel Burr and Beulah Ridgeway are the Daughters of William Coates and the said Mary Ridgeway was the Daughter of the said William Coate formally of the Township of (Killingburrough) in the said County deceased of the one (Coat) And Barzilla Coate of () Chester aforesaid the only surviving son of the said William Coate of the (). Notes:

Neither Edith or a husband were mentioned in the 1783 Indenture where Barzilla paid all of his other sisters and their spouses for land he'd received from his father through his brothers' demise. That suggests to me that she and her possible husband had probably died before 1783. One internet source however gives her death date as after 1800 with no spouse listed. Some sources like Comley's book list her spouse as Michael Newbold. However, in most sources Michael is listed with other spouses besides an Edith.

Notes:

On 9/5/1774, William child of Barzillai moved to Evesham Monthly Meeting according to a record of Burlington Monthly Meeting in Hinshaw. Since he is listed as a child, we can only surmise that he was under age 18 at the time. On Sept. 13, 1788, a somewhat underage William of Burlington Co., ward who owned real estate, chose as his guardian, Samuel Evans. His father, Barzilla, had died and willed him 1040 acres of his property in New Hanover Twp. The land had originally belonged to his grandfather and was purchased back by his father from John Garwood in 1714.

This William married a Sarah. They and an infant son were given a certificate of removal from Evesham MM, Burlington Co., NJ to Burlington MM in 1793. (C-1056) So far he is the only William I've found who could be the William who was disowned on 1797, 2, 6 by Burlington Monthly Meeting, NJ for marrying out of unity unless of course it's a son of his named William who married out of unity. William did have a son named William but he wasn't born till 1794.

In either case, William, the elder here had a wife named Sarah in the inventory of his estate in 1811. (Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia). He had a total of 3 sons and five daughters. William appears to have a brother Barzilla who witnessed his will. He mentions no children in it. (C-1078)

The son whom he did not mention in his will, either died or possibly was the Michael Coate of Evesham Twp. who made his will in 1814, had wife, Mehitable and mother Sarah. This Michael was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. William Sharp was a witness to Michael's will. (C-1078)
