  1. 1.  Gentleman John COATEGentleman John COATE was born before 1732 in , Hunterdon, NJ; died on 6 May 1803 in , Newberry, SC, USA.

    Notes:

This Coate's group's lineage is proven back to Henry Coate "The Elder" b. abt 1595 who was the son of Marmaduke and Marie Somner Coate of Bridgeport and Curry Rivel England via a YDNA match to a cousin in Australia. We know from our Coats YDNA group that Gentleman John is absolutely a descendant from Samuel and Mary Saunder's Coate so the theory that his father is William is still reasonable. William was after all the only other son of Samuel and Mary Saunders Coate that ended up in South Carolina near the town of Newberry. We also know that his brother, Henry's sons as recorded in Quaker records do not account for any of William's sons.

What we also know through a detailed YDNA analysis, is that his son John is Big John Coats!!!!! This evidence comes from comparing the YDNA of a descendant of Gentleman John with 4 descendants of Big John. The results show Big John is related at the 8 generation point to Gentleman John at the 97% range. Also these sets of descendants have way more YDNA in common than with anyone else in the Coats group confirming by age, place and YDNA that Big John is the son of Gentleman John. Multiple autosomal triangulations with another descendant of Big John via his son John M. also converge on this exact same deduction.

We now have good YDNA evidence that Gentleman John is the probable brother to Thomas who died in the Newberry area of SC in 1800.

We also now have an indication via autosomal DNA triangulations with Dubois descendants that this Gentleman John who died on May 6, 1803 is related to the Rachel Dubois Coate of Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, PA and to her grandfaher, Louis Dubois. What that indicates is that Gentleman John's wife or Mother was a Dubois descended from Louis Dubois! We know it can be narrowed to these 2 females as they are the only unknown females back in the distance where autosomal dna is indicating a common Dubois ancestor to Gentleman John.

What we also know about John is that he has the title Gentleman in some of the late public documents in the Carolinas. He was probably born between 1730 and 1740. He might possibly be the John Coate who along with wife Mary, moved from Chesterfield M.M. to Kingwood M.M., N.J. on 13,1,1763 and then returned to Chesterfield M.M. on 11,12,1766. (C-46) Here is what Summers book says about him: "John Coats died about 1803, his will being dated May 25, 1799. He left widow, Mary, and children Samuel, John, William, James, Mary Pemberton, Katy Casselle, and Rebecca."

We know that John Coate owned land on Mathias Branch on Bush Creek from his will. Kathleen Woodrow believes that Mathias Branch is a creek that runs closely into the junction of Reedy Creek and Big Beaverdam Creek before it flows into Bush River a mile north of the town of Newberry. However, it should be noted that no deed has been found for his purchase of land. A 400 acre tract purchased in 1772 is attributed to him, but it's location has been determined to be multiple miles northwest of the town of Newberry, with neighbors that don't connect to any of the neighbors of his in a 1773 plat map or in his will of 1803. A plat map survey done for Christian Kinslar in Mar. of 1773 on Bush River shows that John Coate (his son) was adjoining his land. Other neighbors included Jacob Pemberton, John Furnas, Samuel Kelly, and Jacob Chandler (all families mentioned as adjoining land he was giving to his sons in his will). Some of these are the same persons living next to William Coats when he purchased land in Craven Co., SC in 1767. He therefore, might be the John Coats who purchased 150 acres of land on June 6, 1769 in Craven Co., South Carolina. It's possible boundary changes in the county lines could mean this land was later in Newberry, SC. That needs to be checked. (C-2306)

He was the John that was connected as furnishing sundries and supplies during the Revolutionary War in DAR records. This was revoked as lacking evidence at some point. Here is the DAR index that was listed for Gentleman John in the past. COATS , John, Birth SC Circa 1740, Rank PS (Public Service), Service SC, Death SC 3 , Jun 1803, Patriot Pensioned No, Widow Pensioned No, Children Pensioned No, Heirs Pensioned No, Spouse (1) Mary X (C-614c, 1889, EL-Coate). He apparently was delisted as a Revolutionary War supporter in about 1998 because no one could prove for sure that he was the John Coate who was a Revolutionary War soldier. These reimbursement papers from 1781-1783 indicate he did blacksmithing. These papers, therefore, likely to belong to Big John or Little John Coats as they were the only known blacksmiths in the Coate family at that time. He or his son John is probably the John who was disowned by the Quaker church at the Oct 28, 1780 Bush River MM, South Carolina. His family isn't even included in Medlin's [UL:Quaker Families:UL]. It should be noted however, that the William who is connected as John's son, signs his own will like a Quaker would have.

At least some of his grandchildren married into the Baptist faith and are buried in Bush River Baptist Cemetery. One of his great grand-daughters married into the Baptist faith, Nancy, d. of Samuel's daughter, Charlotte Steadman, also. (C-1896, 1927)In the 1790 census (p. 57), I now believe him to be the John Cotes living next to Samuel Kelly. If so, he had 3 males over 16 and 3 females in the household. This would account for he and his wife, their son James and youngest daughter, Rebecka. I'm guessing that one of his married children and spouse are also still living on his farm at that time. If this is him, he is living next to Samuel Kelly, Sr. and near his son John who looked to be newly married with a wife. They would have also lived within 40 homes of Marmaduke and Little John Coates family.

I have determined that this census applies to him for the following reasons. His neighbors in the 1790 census records match his neighbors in the following land transactions. He is listed as a neighbor along with James Dobbins on Matthias Branch of Bush River in Aug of 1770. (James Dobbins is also on page 56.) His daughter Mary is married to George Pemberton on page 57 also. When he witnesses Joseiah Pemberton's purchase of land on Dec 5, 1771 on Mathews Creek on Bush River, his neighbors are Robert Evans, and John Brooks. Pembertons and Brooks lived somewhat near as they are on page 57 and 56. (see below) When he deeds 3 of his sons property in 1803 before his death, the properties bounded on lands owned by Samuel Compton (Kampton), Rebekah Evans, Welk Furnas and Samuel Kelly. All the persons mentioned in these records are neighbors or have the same surnames of persons living near him in the 1790 census. One of these deed records is listed below. (C-559, 1549, 2232) p. 247 Book Z-3, pp. 271-275, 5 or 6 Dec. 1771, James Walker Moore (his mark), blacksmith, Haverilla (her mark) his wife, to Joseiah Pemberton, planter, both of Berkeley Co., for 400 pounds currency, 250 a. on Mathews Creek, a branch of Bush River, bounding NW, NE on Robert Evans; NE on John Brooks; other sides on vacant land; granted Moore 24 Aug 1720 by Lt. Gov. William Bull (Sec. Book F.F.F., p. 131). Witnesses: John Thomas, John Coate, James Daugherty. Before Thomas Wadlington, J.P. Recorded 10 Nov. 1772 by Henry Rugeley, Register. In the 1800 census, Gentleman John and his wife are empty nesters, living as a couple with no other children in their household.

John Coate's wife's surname is still unknown. Parks suggested that it might be Mary McQueston from a 1769 marriage record in North Carolina. However, this entire family named John Coots and Mary McQuiston, stayed and raised children in NC and Tennesee in Presbyterian Church records, so that theory has been proven to be incorrect. (C-1898) Another theory is that she is Mary Watson based upon a deed record dated Jun 7, 1774. Though it is possible he married a Mary Watson, I see no certain connection because we've figured out who each of the persons in that deed are. A James Coate died in 1794 in GA, leaving heirs that included his wife Mary, his son John (who had moved to Newberry, SC) and multiple daughters who all married Watsons, sons of Thomas Watson, Sr. (C-1521)

His will written May 25, 1799 is transcribed as follows: In the Name of God Amen (This verifies that he is not a Quaker at his death as it is a form of oath taking) ---- I John Coate of the County of Newberry and State of South Carolina being in my perfect mind memory and Understanding and Calling to mind the Mortality of my body and Knowing that it is appointed for Man Once to die, do Make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament (VIZ). I give and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Mary Coats all my Household Kitchen furniture of what every kind there May be during her natural life and at her death to be Disposed off as she may think proper, for her Support and Maintainace - Item. I give and bequeth unto my son Samuel Coats One Shillng Sterling and no more to him his heirs forever ---- Item. I give and bequeth unto my Son John Coats One Tract of land lying on waters of Bush River Joining lands of William Comptons, and running on Samuel Comptons, Rebekah Evans's and Isaiah Pemberton's lines to the Corner from thence across to Chandlers line it being a part of a Tract of Three Hundred Ac of land to him his heirs and assigns forever. ---Item I give and bequeath unto my son William Coats a plantation or Tract of land Joining lands of Samuel Kelley beginning at Mathiases Creek from thence running upon Chandlers line from thence up the line to where it intersects the line to be run between my sons John Coats and William Coats, being a part of aforeseaid Tract of Three Hundred Acres, with my Waggon and all my working and farming Utensils to him his heirs & Assigns forever --- Item I give and bequeath unto my son James Coats one other plantation or Tract of land lying on the East Side of Mathhieses Creek beginning on Isaiah Pembertons line and running to Wilk Furnaises line from thence on Isaiah Pembertons line down to Matthew's Creek thence up the said Creek to the beginning to him his heirs and assigns forever --- Item I give and bequeath unto my three Daughters Namely Mary Pemberton Caty Cassels and Rebekah Coats One Shilling Sterling and no more. and lastly I Do hereby Nominate appoint my Sons James Coats, John Coats and William Coats my Executors to this My last Will & Testatment Ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament and Revoking all other wills by me made In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this 25th, Day of May 1799 --- Signed Sealed published pronounce and Declared to be the last Will and Testament of the said John Coate in the presence of Edward Thweatt Geo. Powel - Fred. Nance John Coate (Seal) Recorded in Will Book "D" Page 57. Proved June 6th, 1803. Test. Samuel Lindsey, O.N.D. (Recording Date Not Available). Box No. 26- Pkg No 55-- Est No. 613. (C-266, 336, 614b, 633, 692, 1954, 2121)He died on May 6, 1803. (C-692) His children were not listed as minors at the writing of his will in 1799. Two of his daughters were married by that point. (C-879, 886)

All the children's birth dates I have estimated from information in the will, from information on his possible son Samuel's daughter, Nancy, and from census records. Note that as the son of William, he would have named one son after his father and one daughter after his step-sister Katherine.

An interesting pattern appears with the land he deeded his sons on his deathbed in 1803. Gentleman John's son William in his will dated 1816, gives land to his family that is described in a way that could match the original William of 1766's land in Newberry Co., South Carolina. It is listed as adjoining "old Golden's" land which was true of William of 1766's land. When he was given land by his father's will dated 1799, the land was described as being next to Samuel Kelly's land. Again, this was another neighbor of the original William. In other words, the William who died ca 1822 could have owned land of his grandfather. We are not sure if he received it from his father John, his possible grandfather William, or one of his brothers, but it certainly sounds like land that the original William owned.

Gentleman married Mary UNKNOWN before 1754. Mary was born before 1735; died after 1799. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

YDNA now clearly indicates that Big John is the son of Gentleman John through 3 of Big John's descendants. No other descendants from any other Coats in our group have as much shared DNA and such a high probality that they are father and son. By estimated ages and place, this is likely also. Check out our YDNA group at http://www.ancestrees.com/henrycoatebabt1595ydnagroup.html that indicates they have a 97% chance of being closely related within 8 generations of descendants. That's as lovely a chart as you can get for YDNA probabilities between father and son of this time period for 37 points. At last, we finally know who Big John's father is!This John who is referred to here was a Blacksmith. He starts his will with a declaration, "In the name of God, Amen", which indicates that he personally is not a Quaker. Daughter Rachel is listed in one of the "laying downs" in the Bush River Monthly Meeting. However, when she marries Thomas Wilkinson Furnas in 1792, he was disowned for marrying out of unity (a wife who wasn't a Quaker). Daughter Mary is the only one that appears to have been a Quaker as she was married in the same monthly meeting. (C-1838)His wife, Rachel's family were Quaker and lived in the Wateree MM district of Camden, Kershaw Co., SC from 1764 onward. This area became the Bush River MM area which her parent's family helped establish. It is highly likely that Rachel and her husband married in this region and settled down on Beaverdam Creek. (C-1920, see bio on John C. Wright also.)Big John bought 150 acres on July 4 1769 in Craven Co. on the Saluda River at Beaver Dam Creek. (He probably began this purchase process on May 6, 1766.) His neighbors included Charles Nicks, Isaac Cook (brother-in-law), Thomas Brooks, Calib Gilbert, Peter Hakins and George Heaworth (later). (C-692, 947) He was apparently the only John Coat that lived on this Beaverdam Creek. (There are two other Beaverdam Creeks: Big Beaverdam Creek that flows west and a little north of this and flows into Little River above Mudlick Creek and one that flows into Bush River) C-1552, 1554) This is the same area where many of the children of John Wright Sr. (the father of his wife Rachel) lived. He sold this land in 1787. (C-2075) A deed transcribed by John H. Coate of Michigan in which John purchased four acres from brother-in-law, Isaac Cook follows: (C-1925) "Know all men by these present that I Isaac Cook of Newberry County and State of South Carolina am held and firmly bound unto John Coats of the same place in the R___ sum of twenty pounds Sterling which payment will and truly to be maid I ____ myself and my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns ____ by this ______ sealed with my seal and dated this Eleventh day of February 1788 anno domino one thousand seven hundred and eighty eight. The conditions of the obligation is such that if the above boundin Isaac Cook his heirs Executors Administrators or assigns shall make or cause to be maid unto the (aforesaid) John Coats his heirs or assigns good sufficient lawful title to a certain tract of land containing four acres situated in the county and State aforesaid on the waters of the Beaverdam, a branch of Saluda River _______sixteen(?) perches on Richard Tompsons land and forty perches on the said John Coats' ___ land then the above obligation to be void or else to remain in full force and virtue in ??????? the land. Isaac Cook hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year _____ above written" The will was witnessed by a John (Jay) and Mary Coate. John then proceeded to assign the 4 acres to Jesse Coats (Negro), his slave. He gave Jesse his freedom in 1795. (Newberry Co. Deed Book C, p. 499)John Coate's supposed sons mostly settled on land adjacent to their fathers. Big John and Rachel sold land to (son) Wright Coates on Sept. 24, 1795. (C-909) This Big John is listed as B. John or Big John in his land deeds and legal documents as demonstrated by John H. Coate of Michigan. (C-633)In Newberry Ct. records, dated Sep. Term, 1790 it was ordered that Big John Coats be "appointed overseer instead of Tho's Black & command the same hands for the lease & release (of land) from Henry Coats to Robert Gilliam Esq'r proved on a dedimus directed to Burk County in the State of Georgia & ordered to be recorded." (C-1528)In the 1790 census I believe he is the John Coats on page 79 in the Newberry Co., SC census. He had 2 males over 16 (he and son Wright), 2 males under 16 (John (adopted) and James), 4 females (Rachel, his wife, and daughters Rachel, Mary, & Rebecca -adopted) and a slave in his household. The reasons why I think this is him, is because it fits his possible children, he is living off from other Coats in the census and persons surrounding him are some of his father-in-law's children. Big John originally got some of his land from his father-in-law and had neighbors that were some of his wife's siblings. Case in point: Sister-in-law Susannah was married to Isaac Hollingsworth. Isaac is living in that region. Brother-in-law's Thomas Write and Nathan Write are also listed in that same region. Big John had one slave which he freed in 1795, and this John's household has one slave in 1790. In this census, his neighbors include several Gallbreaths' including the John and James Gallbreath who sold parts of the original William's 1766 land purchase. The Gallbreaths sold the land in 1800 and abt. 1804. The land the Gallbreath's sold is located on the north of Bush River, which is not adjacent to where Big John lived. Locating all the places where the Gallbreaths owned land in 1800 would be useful to picture this. Did the Gallbreaths live near Big John in 1790, but also own land about 3 miles east where William's original land was located in 1800?In the 1800 census on pg. 70, he is the John who has one under age 10 (Sampson), one male between ten and 16 (John Jr.), one male between 16 and 26 (James), himself (over 45), 1 female between ten and 16 (Rebecca), one unknown female between 16 and 26 and Rachel his wife (over 45) plus one other free person in the family (his freed slave).According to Summer's Book: "Old John Coate died about 1802-1803, bequeathed estate to widow, Rachel, and children James and Sampson. Wright Coate made his will on Nov. 18, 1808, and died in the same year. He left widow, Mary, and children Frederick, Daniel, and Susan. Exr John Belton O'neall." The fact that he is the only John referred to as "Old" in a list of several John Coates who died in a similar time range....this John's birth date is likely to be before all the others guestimated to be between 1733 and 1748. Note, that his death date turns out to be around 1809 instead. His will is transcribed and provided by John H. Coats as follows:"WILL OF JOHN COATS 31 January 1803Newberry County South CarolinaWill Book 4 pg. 11In the name of God Amen. I John Coats of Newberry District in the State of South Carolina being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Rachal all my moveable and personal estate. Second I give and devise my land as follows first I give to my son James that part of my land the north east side of the publick road or the road nearly the line, the Division line to begin at the road on William Coats's line thence along the road to a crook in it thence to continue so as to come nearby a field and include the said field, thence a strait line so as to strike the line near the said publick road, with the appurtenances thereunto belonging to him and his heirs and assigns forever. Secondly I give and devise all the residue of my land where on the house stands the southwest side of said road and division line to my son Sampson and his heirs and assigns forever with the appurtenances thereunto belonging except such privileges as are herby reserved for my wife as follows. I give my wife Rachal privilege or income of my land and houses or buildings that I gave my son Sampson until he comes to be of age and afterwards my said wife shall have privilege of the said house and garden during her natural life and lastly I hereby appoint my said wife Rachal to be my executrix to execute this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirty first day of January in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and three.Signed sealed and declaredhisby the above named JohnJohnCoatsCoats to be his last will andmarktestament in the presence of uswho have hereto subscribed ournames as witnesses in the presenceof the testator byIsaac KirkSamuel Cottman?Levi Longshore"You will note that in the will, John only names 2 sons, Sampson and James. Researchers believe that he actually had 4 sons and 2 or 3 daughters for the following reasons. They had a daughter Mary, whose marriage they witnessed in the parent witness position. Grandchildren of Mary's knew that she had a sister Rebecca and a brother John. Rebecca cared for John's children when they moved to Ohio after John's wife had died. Rebecca was also buried next to her sister. John also gives his "brother" William guardianship of his children several years after his wife died. However, DNA evidence show's that John's descendant's DNA is not the same as the others that descend from James, Wright, and William making it likely that John was adopted into the family. Rachel is said to be his daughter because she moved to Ohio with her sister, Mary's family, and their families are buried together. William is thought to be Big John's son because Big John and Rachel witnessed William's purchase of land from his likely brother, Wright Coates, as a young man. William's land is also mentioned in Big John's will as existing next to land he bequeaths to one of his sons. William's descendants do have DNA that is only different by 1 point out of 37 to Marmaduke Coate's DNA grouping. Wright is listed as the brother of James in an equity record for South Carolina verifying that he is a son of Big John and this is also supported by DNA evidence. All of these children are accounted for in the 1790 and 1800 census records for this family.

Big married Rachel WRIGHT before 1768. Rachel (daughter of John C. WRIGHT, * and Rachel WELLS, Minister) was born on 10 Nov 1747 in , Prince George, MD, USA; died on 2 Sep 1790 in , , SC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

William Coate of Newberry purchased 116 acres from Abijah or Elisha O'neal on Sept 18, 1799. His neighbors included Wm. Coate (himself?), John Coates (his father or brother?), and William O'neal. Witnesses were William Oneal, John Oneal and Abijah Oneal.

In 1790 he is likely to be the William who is on the same page as his father, John Sr., brother John, and Samuel. In it, there is one male under 16, 1 male over 16 and 3 females, p. 77, Newberry Census. If the 3 females includes his 2nd daughter Sarah, she would have been born in the summer of 1790. There are several possible matches in the 1800's for William. The most likely is the William in Newberry on p. 70 who is between the ages of 26 and 45 with a wife the same age. He has 2 sons and 4 daughters under age 10, and 1 son and 1 daughter from age 10-16. I've based my estimates of his children's births on this one as it well matches his known number of sons and daughters. There is also a William between the ages of 16 and 26 with a wife the same age. In the 1810 census, there is only 1 William Coate listed as living in Newberry on page 122 that needs checked. He is likely the William who is on page 149 in the 1820 census for Newberry Co., SC with 2 sons and one daughter aged 10-16. He and his wife were over age 45. He is listed on the same page with John Sr. over age 45 (brother), John Jr. between 26-45 (nephew), Sarah Coates and Marmaduke Coats (relative who later is the administrator for and contests William's will.)

William's will written in 1816, lists his wife and children seemingly in order by age, at least between sons and daughters. It is transcribed here in it's entirety by Charlotte Coats Sierks: State of South Carolina. To all whom it may concern know that I William Coate of Newberry District in the State aforesaid being of sound and disposing mind and memory have thought proper and fit to make ordain constitute and appoint this my last will and testament in the manner and form following that is to say: First: I hereby will and ordr all my just debts and funreal expenses to be justly timely and punctually paid out of any money I may have at my decease or out of my personal estates before any division on other distribution thereof be made and Secondly I give and bequeath to my son John Coate all that parcel or part of my land lying and being on the East side thereof whereas he lately settled and lived from Goldens old field to the line adjoining where Ralph Campbell lately lived, now belonging to Richard Rice to him his heirs and assigns for ever. Together with all such other articles of stock plantation tools of which I have already given him. Thirdly I bequeath and confirm to my daughter Mary Taylor all such articles of stock, household and kitchen furntire or other matter that I have already given her together with such other legacy or bequest as may hereafter be made to her in this present instrument or Will. Fourthly I give and bequeath to to each of my four younger daughters namely, Sarah, Margaret, Anna and Dorothy, as soon as they marry or become of lawful age to receive the same, 1 feather bed or furniture, 1 cotton spinning wheel, and pair of cards, 1 set knives and forks, 1 set tea cups and saucers, half dozen plates, 1 pot, 1 dutch oven, and one cow and calf 1 breeding sow and two sheep, together with such other legacy or bequest as may hereafter be made to them in this instrument or Will. Fifthly I give and bequeath to each of my three younger sons, William, Reuben and Jesse, one horse about the value of fifty five dollars, with a saddle and bridle of middling quality, one plow and gears, one mattock axe and hoe, 1 cow and calf, 1 breeding sow and two sheep. I do hereby certify the within to be a true sale bill of all the personal estate of Wm Coate dec'd except one feather bed for each girl according to the Will which I thought proper to leave for them, that came within my knowledge this 8th February 1823. signed: Maramduke Coate, Clerk and Administrator A true record of the original papers on the estate of William Coate deceased November 20th 1823. T.T. Cureton O.N.D Newberry Wills, Book I p. 68 Transcribed by Charlotte Coats-Siercks

The way he begins his will "To all whom it may concern," indicates that he was a Quaker using the nonstandard non-oath taking form of a will. John Kelly Sr., James Galbreath and Allen Richardson witness his will. These persons were also listed in the estate settlement of John Galbreath's will in 1802. James Galbreath is the likely son of John Galbreath who sold some of the original William Coate's land in the early 1800's which he had inherited from his father. These Gallbreaths were also the ancestors of the famous family in "Cheaper by the Dozen". (C-266, 2069)

William will's land to his son John describing it as land on the east side of where he now lives, from Goldings old field to where Ralph Cambell lately lived, now belonging to Richard Rice. The William who purchased 200 acres in 1766 bought land next to Thomas Golden suggesting that is could be part of the same property. The will does not, however, mention any previous owner of the land. It is Charlotte Coate's theory that this William is the original William who purchased land in 1766 in Berkeley, SC, and not his grandson as listed herein. It is my theory that this William is the grandson of the William who purchased the land in 1766/67 for the following reasons. 1) William who made his will in 1816, had 4 daughters and 3 sons still under age 21. If he is the William who purchased land in 1766/7, he would have been at least 66 and more likely 72 or older at the time of his will in 1816 with some daughters who were still underage. This seems stretched to me. 2) John Belton Oneal who sold 120 acres of William's original land of 1766/7 in 1821, wrote "Annals of Newberry". Owning his land, he would have known that it belonged to a living William Coate if that were true. Instead he stated in that book, that William lived in Newberry from about 1762 to 1796.

Therefore, the William who is willing land in 1816 is likely to be either a son or grandson of the original William. If the land was kept in the family it would explain why no deed of transfer is in the courthouse records.

From everything known about the William who wrote his will in 1816, he and his children were the correct age to be grandson's and gr. grandchildren of the original William. All of Gentleman John's descendants have believed for years, that this William is the son of Gentleman John and Gentleman John is the son of the original William who purchased land in 1766/7.

Gentleman John willed his sons land totaling 300 acres of which no deed exists. Two hundred of these acres could be accounted for if William of 1766/7 were his father. The fact that grandson William owns land belonging to his grandfather, is simply another clue that supports the lineage as presented. (C-2070)

In 1790, this Samuel is the one who has a wife and six daughters. (C-1859) Samuel was born before 1758 as his first daughter's estimated birth date is 1775. He is highly likely to be the Samuel who bought 150 acres in 1774 in Newberry Co., NC and then sold it to J. Gardner in 1775. In 1788, he purchased 192 acres of land on Beaver Dam Creek on a branch of Bush River. In 1797, his brother John Sr. purchases 28 adjacent acres. He is likely to be the Samuel who died in 1807, lived in Bush River MM, SC at some point in his life and married Mary. (C-556, p. 85) This is supported by the information on Gentleman John's son Samuel in Emma O. Collins book. It doesn't give the source for it's information, but it lists 5 unknown daughters with their spouses names which came from Samuel's will dated 1807. That means 5 of his daughters were married and all likely above age 18 before 1807. The daughters ages are estimated from census records and they might be out of order with whom they married. As I find the ages of whom they've married I'll be able to better guestimate which daughter's age went with which husband named in their father's will.

He is the Sam Coate living between Little John Coates, Marmaduke and (Gentleman) John Coates Sr. in 96th District, SC in the 1790 census records. In that, he is the only male in the household living with 7 females. In the 1800 census on page 72, his household now has 1 male and female over age 45, 1 male under age 10, 1 female under age 10, 2 females between 10 and 16 and 2 females between 16 and 26. The person in the household is listed in the last column. I'm not sure if that indicates 1 slave or not? His name is spelled Samuel Coates. There is a deed often attributed to this Samuel where he sells land for the Quaker MM house in Jan. 17, 1804. I believe this belongs to my Samuel, son of Marmaduke instead for the reasons that are stated in my gr... uncle Samuel's biography in this database.

In his administration settled from 1807 to 1817, he left widow, Mary, and legatees: James Wilson, James Reeder, James Stadman, John Williams, John Taylor, Jesse Neal, and Delilah Coate according to Summers Book. Basically these were his son-in-laws and an unmarried daughter or daughter-in-law, Delilah with wife, Mary. Because Delilah was not in the census records and because all the other daughters are accounted for in the 1800 census, it is my theory that she is his daughter-in-law and his only son has died. (C-1914) The estate sale included Mary Cote, John Taylor, John Frost, Joseph Smith, George Marshall, David Miles, George Mendenhall, Isaac Gilder, Robert Evans, William Summers, Jacob Taylor, Mathew Brooks, James Stedmon, James Reder, Martin Taylor, Ferrel or Matthew Brooks, Ralph Campbell and Jacob Lindsey.

There is also a bond of some type signed by Mary Coate, John Taylor, Joseph Eastland and Thomas Elmore. There were quite a few notes that were paid off after his estate sale to John Frost, William Dilling, and Samuel Miles estate all signed by Samuel Coate or Coats.

    Notes:

Her birth date is before 1775 from census records, but since Dan Buckley ascertained her husband's name and marriage date of 1779, we can be fairly certain that she was born before 1765 and likely before 1760.

Mary married George PEMBERTON before 29 Aug 1779. George (son of Isaiah PEMBERTON and Elizabeth HALL) was born on 3 Dec 1753 in , Jefferson, WV; died on 29 Mar 1805 in Newberry, Newberry, SC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  5. 6.  James COATE, Of EdgefieldJames COATE, Of Edgefield Descendancy chart to this point (1.Gentleman1) was born on 3 Jun 1765; died in 1817 in , Edgefield Dist., SC.

    Notes:

It is this James of Edgefield, son of Gentleman John, that is related to Marmaduke Coate (1738-1822) although the match is not exact. They have a varience of 2 points out of 37 DNA points. We do not know their first common ancestor with certainty at this time, though a theorectical ancestral lineage is presented here. The ages of James and his children come from his family bible in the possession of a descendant. The James who married Elizabeth Scott made his will in 1817. (C-1544, 1550, C-1555, 1560) It is abstracted herewith. Edgefield Co., SC, Will, p. 389 James Coats proven Nov.7, 1817. Legatees; son John Coats, land where I live, granted James Scott, 13 May 1786. One tract conveyed to me by Armstead Hall. April 24, 1805. Son James Coats a tract originally granted William Mazyek, 1775, on Turkey Creek. Another tract Jacob McDaniel February 3, 1806. Daughters, Elizabeth and Hannah. Daughter, Gracey who married James Smiley. My daughter Mary who married Marmaduke Coats. My single daughter. Executor: my son John Coats Box 6 Package 213. John Coats executor Recorded in book B page 389 Nov 7, 1817. John Simkins OEC. Paid Marmaduke Coats $646.00. Paid Thomas Hart $737.00. Paid Hannah Coats $958.00. paid James Smyly in full $1082.00 1821 John Coats Executor. James is not in the 1790 SC census records. He first appears in the 1800 census in Edgefield Co., South Carolina. In it, he and his wife are listed between ages 26 and 45. They have 1 son under age 10 and 3 daughters under age ten. (p. 186). (C-1568, 1638) James, husband of Elizabeth Scott, is the James who bought 300 acres of land from Stephen Williams on Mar 12, 1800 on Turkey Creek in Edgefield District, South Carolina. The land had originally been owned by Jones, Hall and Scott. In Apr. of 1805 he bought 6 additional acres adjoining his land from Armstead Hall. In 1806, he purchased another 50 acres on Turkey Creek from William Partain. In 1807, he is given additional land on Turkey Creek by his father-in-law, James Scott, in his will. His last purchase of land appears to have been on Sep. 1808. He added 199 more acres on the Turkey Creek waters of the Savannah attached to his property from George Wilson (his wife's nephew). (C-912) By 1810 James is again in the Edgfield Co., SC census. One of his sons is under age 10, one is between 10 and 16, and he is over age 45. He has two daughters under age ten, 2 from 10 to 16 and 1 from 16 to 26 years old. His wife appears to be deceased by 1810. Note that he has one more daughter listed here than is named in his will. According to his family bible, that would be Sarah. (C-1569, E) James was of Edgefield at the time and married to an Elizabeth. For years, it has been thought that he was James Roberts married to Josephine Elizabeth Webster, but a bible transcription for them lists James Robert's birth date at 1786 and his marriage date to Elizabeth Webster as 1807. How did he have a wife named Elizabeth in the 1805 deed? If he were James Robert, he would have been born very late compared to his oldest brother Samuel being at least 30 years apart. John W. Coats suggested that James, husband of Elizabeth Scott Coates, of Edgefield was instead the son of Gentleman John. This fit is solid. The James of Edgefield on Turkey Creek is purchasing land there by 1800. He inherited 41 acres from his stated father, Gentleman John which he then sold to his brother, William. "NEWBERRY COURT RECORD: 15 Aug 1805: James Coats of Edgefield District to William Coats of Newberry for $101.00, a tract of 41 acres in Newberry on waters of Bush River called Mathew Creek, which was originally granted to Christian Kinder for 250 acres, and by him to John Coate, deceased. Bequeached by John Coate deceased, to his son James.Signed 15 Aug 1805Recorded 25 Jan 1806Witness: J. B. Mitchell, John Coate. James of Edgefield was born between 1755 and 1765 according to census records and would be the correct age to be Gentleman John's son, James. He married an Elizabeth before the 1805 deed, and he is the only James that can be verified as living in Edgefield at the time. James, Mary and John were three of James and Elizabeth Scott's Coate's children's names that are the same as this family. Lastly, it is verified that James is married to Elizabeth Scott in Edgfield County records according to descendant and researcher, Gary G. Coates of White Hall, Greene Co., Illinois. (C-1549, 1953) This James has also been connected to be the son of William Sr. who died in St. George's Parish, SC near Charleston in 1753. This absolutely doesn't fit with this James who was born in 1765 according to his bible and census info.

James married Elizabeth SCOTT in 1792. Elizabeth (daughter of James SCOTT and Hannah BEALE) died before 1817. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  7. 8.  Rebekah COATERebekah COATE Descendancy chart to this point (1.Gentleman1) was born before 1775; died after 1803.

    Notes:

Collins states that she believes this Rebekah married James Coate who was the son of Big John. However, Big John's son James is the James that is attributed as having married Mary West instead.

I personally believe that this is not the Rebecah married to James. There is a James Coates married to a Rebecah in Newberry, South Carolina. However, this James birth date can be calculated to be in the 1730's as he was likely son of Henry and Esther Coate. She could not therefore, be the Rebecah who married James in Newberry, South Carolina as he was way too old for her. They had purchased land by 1768 in that county.

Generation: 3

  1. 9.  William COATSWilliam COATS Descendancy chart to this point (2.Big2, 1.Gentleman1) was born about 1768; died about Aug 1826 in , Marion, IN, USA.

    Notes:

It is highly likely that this William is the son of Big John. Big John's son William had a wife named Mary who witnessed her husband's sale of land in Newberry, SC in 1807. He is often stated to have the same children as attributed to this William and Mary who lived in Miami Co., Ohio. There is no overlap in timelines if he is the same William who was the probable son of Big John. There is also now much DNA evidence that this line goes through Big John. Three tests through William closely match a test through Big John's son James named in his will and to Wright Coate whom you'll see mentioned below. They were all said to be his sons in Summeral's early Coate research and in Randolph Co., IL books. William bought 100 acres of land in 1785 from John Wright, Jr. that adjoined Big John's land north of Newberry, South Carolina. He is likely to be the William Coats who was listed on the same page as Big John in the 1800 census records for Newberry Co., South Carolina. He and his wife were between the ages of 26 and 45. He had 2 sons under age 11, one between 10 and 16 and 4 daughters under age 11 and 1 from ten to 16 at that time. In 1799, he bought land on Beaverdam, on the waters of the Saluda from Elisha Oneal. He sold part if not all of this land in 1807 to James Brooks. Wright Coate (his brother?) was a witness to this sale. On Nov. 2, 1802, Wright Coats sold him 150 acres that adjoined his first purchase. He appears to have moved to Miami Co., Ohio by about 1807. In 1810, his "adopted" brother John (named as a brother in "The History of Miami County Ohio", p. 462) gives him guardianship of his children including a son named Henry born in 1799. I am calling John adopted, because everyone in his matching DNA group are not related to all of the other Big John Coate sons. According to "Beers History of Miami County" on Newberry Township, William and John were the 2nd and 3rd settlers of the northwest quarter of Section 30, Newberry Twp. along with son-in-law (i.e. Daniel Wright) of William Coats. Beers called it the Upper Piqua region where wars with the Indians meant that Col. John Johnston requested Captain George Buchanan to send a detail of men to protect certain public property and harvest the wheat at the beginning of the war (about 1812). William and John Coats (This could be his brother or son John who came with him to Ohio in "The History of Miami County) settled next to Michael Ingle in Stillwater. Will's son in law, Daniel Wright lived nearby at the corner of what is now Main and Wright St. in Covington, Ohio. According to that same history, they sold this land in 1822 when William and family moved to Indiana. "Pioneer Ancestors of Members of Society of Indiana Pioneers", states that William Coats who settled in Marion Co., Indiana in 1822, was born in South Carolina about 1768 before moving to Ohio and then Indiana. Specifically, "William received a patent in Miami County for the NE 1/4 of Sec. 30, Twp. 8, Range 5E (159.06 acres) on 28 Jan 1811. He and Polly sold part of that land to their son-in-law Daniel Wright 25 Oct. 1813. They sold more to James Dickey on 15 May 1820 and the rest on 20 July 1822 to James Thompson." Their son John had a section of it which he also sold in 1822. "On 16 Nov 1822, William bought 80 acres of land (E 1/2 NW 1/4 Sec. 29) in Marion County, Washington Twp. IN. (See Marion County, Indiana Records by J.E. Darlington). His son Joseph Coats also bought two parcels of land in Washington Township and his son William Coats Jr. bought 80 acres on the same day his father did in the same area." (Quotes are from John H. Coats, Email, 2004) "The History of Randolph Co., IN" says he was born in Paisley, (Scotland) and was the son of Phillip. The book was written in 1882 and would have been the kind of book being published at the time that interviewed family members (living grandchildren of William) to highlight a communities citizens. Errors were often made in these publications as family heresay was involved. In this case, someone probably was hoping that they were descendants of the wealthy Coate Thread company in Paisley, Scotland. Some of these descendants could have been the Coate's that hired a genealogist in the early 1900's to connect them to the Coats thread company family. She/he did not find any proof but in reality also gave a highly questionable genealogy for them known now as "The Old Coates Genealogy" that is riddled with errors. What I do believe is accurate from the history are the names of William and his children, all of whom would have been known by living kin at the time. The children named in this source were John, William, Joseph, Hepsy Wright, Rhoda Wrench, Hetty Harrison and ? Beanblossom. It failed to mention an Elizabeth, Sampson or Henry that I've also seen mentioned in this family. Out of these 3, I personally believe that Elizabeth is also William's child. These children's names can be verified by the following patterns. All of the spouses it mentioned are verified in marriage records for Indiana and Ohio. William moved to Miami Co., Ohio about 1807. (C-1065, 1898) He lived next to his son Joseph in the 1820 census for Miami Co., Ohio. He was listed at over age 45 in this record with one son between the age of 10 and 16 (Henry), plus two females age 16-26 (Hetty and Hepsy) in his household. His son Joseph was age 26 to 45 with two sons under age 10 and a wife age 16-26. (E) His son-in-law, Daniel Wright also lived in Newberry Twp. with a very large family within a few dozen homes of his in this census. Before William died, he and his sons, William and Joseph, purchased land in Marion Co., Indiana records in 1822. His daughter, "Hettie" apparently moved with them and married in that county in 1823. The Randolph Co., Indiana History also stated that family reunions for the family still took place in 1888 in Randolph Co. that included descendants of William's sons, William and Joseph, who had moved elsewhere (Marion and Howard Co., IN), as well as his son John who had moved to Randolph Co., Indiana. William's children are also listed the same way in Willard Heiss's and Mary Helen Pemberton's work. William Coats died by Sept. 1826 in Marion Co., IN without leaving a will. Pages 146-7 of the Inventory and Sale Book A for Marion County, IN give the appraisement and inventory by his administrators/sons, Joseph and William Coats. Buyers at the sale include Joseph Coats, William Coats and William Sr's son-in-law Daniel Wright. Some second hand sources say he died on Jan. 16, 1828 instead. The next question is how is William related to Marmaduke Coate of Newberry, SC? There is the possibility that William is the grandson of William or his brother Henry of Hunterdon Co., NJ and Newberry Co., South Carolina. We believe we know most of the descendants of Henry but have only figured out a couple of William's likely sons and grandchildren so far. By age and place he'd fit into the family through one of these two Coate's also. The supporting evidence for this later possibility is that the current day descendants of William through his son Joseph had the clear family tradition that they were related to Marmaduke Coate of SC who is the son of Henry. Their DNA testing also is within 1 point out of 36 points of a match - the closest match to Marmaduke (b. 1738) so far. What doesn't match thought is William's brother John.. current day descendants of John are not genetically related to William throwing us a curve ball. One likely theory is that William was the son of Big John, but John (William's supposed brother) was simply adopted by Big John.

William married Mary "Polly" JAY before 1785. Mary (daughter of William JAY, Jr. * and Elizabeth LNU) was born on 11 Jan 1777 in Newberry, South Carolina; died on 3 Mar 1822 in Of Miami, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 10.  Wright COATSWright COATS Descendancy chart to this point (2.Big2, 1.Gentleman1) was born about 1770 in , , SC, USA; died before 5 Dec 1808 in , Newberry, SC, USA.

    Notes:

Wright's birth date could easily have been before 1770. He is the only Wright Coats we know of in the area, and he is on one census, 1800's. In it he and his wife are between 26 and 45. They have 2 sons age ten and under, and one daughter from 10-16. According to Daphne they also probably have Mary's sister Rebecca, and mother who had been widowed that year living with them. In the year 1800, Wright Coate (and probably his wife Mary Coate) made purchases of land at Nathan Perry's estate sale in the year 1800. Nathan Perry lived very near the Chandlers and therefore near land belonging to Gentleman John Coates. Wright Coate sold land to his brother, William in 1802 in Newberry Co. The following court record applies to this Wright and several of his brothers as well as a freed slave of his father's named Jesse.LDS Film # 24219 FiledJune 19, 1818 Box 45, No. 1Daniel McMahan Decree -Bill for Injunction Judge W. ThompsonVsJohn O'NeallDaniel McMahan employed Wright Coats and Jesse Coats (a man of color) to carry two loads of cotton to Charleston and to bring back two loads of dry goods. Wright Coats and Jesse Coats did not return to Newberry when expected and Daniel McMahan became apprehensive. He set out to find Wright Coats and Jesse Coats leaving instructions with his clerk Pendleton Pope that if Wright Coats and Jesse Coats returned in his absence, not to pay them. They did return in his absence and Wright Coats received a note from Pendleton Pope for the amount he would be paid after deducting for some goods he took from the store. He said it would be inconvenient for him to return at a later date and that he would send some other person in his place to collect the money. Afterwards Jesse Coats and James Coats applied for the money due to both Wright Coates and Jesse Coats and all money owed was given to him. Jesse Coats and James Coats (brother of Wright Coats) then went to the home of William Lesley in Newberry and gave Wright Coats his portion of the payment. Wright Coates sometime afterwards sued Daniel McMahan for more payment. Daniel McMahan in turn sued Wright Coates but before the trial Wright Coates died leaving John O'Neall as his executor. Daniel McMahan had petitioned the Court to dismiss the Bill because of fraud on the part of William Coates and to have the estate of Wright Coates pay for the Court costs. Wright witnessed the sale of his brother William Coate's land in 1807 and verified that William's wife, Mary, had given her consent to the sale. Wright had his will administered in 1808 or 1809 in Newberry Co., SC with his administrators listed as Mary Coate (wife) and J. O'Neal. His will starts with the words, "In the name of God, Amen" which indicate he was not a Quaker. (C-266, 1403, C-1479, 1942)

Wright married Mary GAUNT after 1789. Mary (daughter of Israel GAUNT and Hannah SPENCER) was born on 10 Nov 1772; died on 10 Nov 1848 in , Giles, TN, USA; was buried in Old Gilbert Cemetery, Giles, TN, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Rachel's husband was disowned from the Quaker Church on Feb 25, 1792 for marrying out of unity. They both moved to Miami Co., Ohio along with her sister, Mary. She and Mary's families are buried next to each other in Old Concord Cemetery. Her husband, Thomas W. Furnas, became an Ohio State Legislator. She could be the Rachel Coate buried in Union Cemetery just north of Ludlow Falls, Ohio who is listed as the wife of Wm. Furnas, age 73 years, 6 mo, 11 days who died on Mar. 16, 1847. (C-1935, 1943)

    Notes:

This Mary is the ancestor of Mary Pearson Greenlee who had the records of Marmaduke's 4 extra children. It can be proved that she is the daughter of this Big John Coate because in her Quaker marriage record, she is listed as the daughter of John Coate, Blacksmith, of the 96th District. When he witnesses the marriage his name is right next to Rachel Coate (his wife).

Their Quaker marriage record follows: Whereas Samuel Pearson, Son of Samuel Pearson, of the District of 96, and the County of Newberry, farmer, and Mary Coate, daughter of John Coate, blacksmith, district and county aforesaid. Having declared their intentions of taking each other in marriage before several meetings of the people called Quakers, in the county of Newberry, aforesaid, and the proceedings of the meetings. Samuel Pearson, esq. and Mary Coate after due inquiry and deliberate consideration thereof were followed by the Friends Meeting, they appeared clear of all others, and having the consent of their parents, relatives concerned, now these are to certify to all whom it may concern that for accomplishing of such marriage, this second day of the ninth month, called September, in the year 1790. They, Samuel Pearson and Mary Coate appeared in a public assembly of the people, and others in their meeting. Now declares as followeth before the assembly. 'I take this my friend, Mary Coate to be my wife, promising through divine assistance to be unto her a loving and faithful husband, until it shall please the Lord by death to separate us,' And the Mary Coate then and there in the assembly in like manner declares as follows, 'Before God and this assembly I take this my friend Samuel Pearson to be my husband promising through divine assistance to be unto him a loving and faithful wife until it please the Lord to separate us.' And the Samuel Pearson and Mary Coate as a further confirmation thereof and in testimony thereunto did then and there and before those present set their hand." The certificate continues with the names of those who witnessed the ceremony. "We whose names are hereunto subscribed being present among others at the solemnizing of the marriage and the subscription in the manner aforesaid, and the year above written: James Brooks (uncle on mom's side), Isaac Hollingsworth (uncle on mom's side) Abraham Hollingsworth (future brother-in-law), John O'Neall, Simbra Grant, Rachel Hollingsworth, Rachel McCoole, Mary Cook, Susannah Brooks, Susannah Coate, Mary O'Neall, Jehu Beel, Lydia Hasket, Hugh 0'Neall, Joseph Furnas, Esther Pearson, Charity Cook (sister), Rachel Coate (sister), Ann Galbreath, and Samuel, Mary (2), William, Benjamin, Margaret, and Sarah Pearson, John Coate (father), Rachel Coate (mother), Isaac Cook (brother-in-law)." "Quote from Enid M. Hawthorne book, The Pearson Family Tree from England to America" (C-729, 1536, 1538, 1540)

Not only are most of these witnesses relatives of the bride or groom, but Mary and Samuel named their first son Wright after her family surname, the second son Enoch after a great grandfather, and another son, Sampson after Mary's youngest brother, all of this as kindly provided by John H. Coats of Michigan. (C-1547) Mary is some second hand sources, is listed with a second husband, Thomas Furnas, right before her marriage to Samuel Pearson. However, this information is incorrect. It is her sister Rachel that marries Thomas Furnas in 1792. (C-2111)

Mary married Samuel PEARSON on 9 Sep 1790 in Bush River M.M., Newberry, SC, USA. Samuel (son of Samuel PEARSON and Mary ROGERS) was born in Mar 1767 in , Winchester, VA; died on 29 Sep 1846 in , Miami, OH, USA; was buried after 29 Sep 1846 in , Miami, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

This John is sometimes listed as the son of Gentleman John. No proof exists for this. John and his wife were having children before 1796 when they had son John. Their daughter, Rachel, was born first. They had 12 or 13 children total, the last born in 1818. (C-1320, 1630) In the 1800 census, John is possibly listed on page 69 of the Newberry Census. He and his wife were between the ages of 16 and 26. They had 2 sons under age 10 and 3 daughters in the same age range. The youngest they would likely be with 5 children is 21, giving them a birth date range of 1774-1779, with 1774 being the more likely.... or he could be the John Coats of Laurens Co., SC in 1800 with 1 male under 10 [possibly John Jr.?], and one male 26-45 [John himself?]; 4 females under 10 [Rachel, Rebecca, Susan, ?], a female 26-45 [wife-Susan?Brock?] and 1 female over 45[a mother or a mother-in-law?] as Jack Waddell theorizes. He is not in the 1820 Ohio census, and it appears that his son John is living as the head of household with siblings or hired workers and possibly his mother living with him: 1 male 16/26 [himself]; 1 male 10/16; 1 male 16/18; 1 female 10/16; 1 female 16/26; 1 female over 45; 4 in agr. He is in the 1830 census records again at age between 60-70, his wife is between 50-60. They have 2 sons living with them between 20-30 and 2 daughters aged 10-15, and 15-20. They are living next door to their son John, Jr. in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. John, Sr. is missing from the 1835 quad census suggesting that he had died or had moved by that time. Every child from George on was born in Ohio. Those previous to him were born in SC according to their census records. Several of the children were listed as members of the Greenville Creek Christian Church in Miami Co. or Darke Co., Ohio. They included George, John, Patsy (Daughter-in-Law), and Lucinda. (C-1958) It is not known with certainty that his wife's name was Susan Brock.

    Notes:

James is given land in his father's will written in 1803. He is obviously of an age to receive the land at his father's death estimating his birth age to be before 1787 as landowners could be age 16 or older at that time. According to "The Annals of Newberry" James, son of Big John and a John Turner, Jr. were involved with the death of a William Cox. William apparently got in a fight with them over a fishing hole around the Saluda River and died in the scuffle. The trial for murder took place in the March 1807 court. John Turner, Jr. was sentenced to the pillary and James fled the state. (C-1838, 1839, 1917, 1922) Most accounts state that nothing further was ever heard of James Coats. According to some descendants, this is the James Coate b. 1779 (from PA) married to Mary West who is the son of Stephen Marmaduke Coate and Martha Ann Matthews. Guy Coates and others believe he is the son of Big John Coate instead. DNA matches with descendants of son Wright, and possible son William are a match to this theory.

I've currently placed James married to Mary West as the son of Big John for this reason as well as the following. 1. It doesn't fit that he could be the son of Stephen Marmaduke Coate because: James's first 3 children were all born in SC all previous to the 1807 murder according to their census records. The only Stephen Coates (no Stephen Marmaduke) of this time period we've been able to find lives in Pennsylvania and New York at the time. His children were not being born in South Carolina. 2. James was born in PA in 1779 according to his 1850 census record, but in South Carolina according to his son John C. Coates 1880 census record.

If James is the son of Big John who committed murder, he could have lied about his birth place while his son gave the truth not knowing his parents had done otherwise. (C-2216, EL) 3. James, the son of Big John, was involved in a murder in 1807 and escaped from South Carolina. The first verified specific birth date of one of James's children is Elizabeth who was born in 1809 in Miami Co., Ohio. This is also still a fit. (C-482, C-1628)

For futher proof, please see the quoted section by Guy Coates below. Guy Coates believes James Coate of Newberry, Twp., Miami Co., Ohio is the missing son of Big John for the following reasons based upon his ancestor's known timeline and his DNA that matches other persons whom were descended from William, Big John's other possible son. Guy Coate's grandfather said that his ancestor, James Coates fought in the War of 1812 and was from Pennsylvania. "A James Coats (is) on the roster of Ohio soldiers in War of 1812. A James Coats is listed as a captain in Westfall's Mounted Company. This group of soldiers was trained in Pennsylvania and assigned the task of building a fort along the Stillwater River near today's Covington, Ohio. The fort was originally named "Fort Recovery," but later became known as "Fort Rowdy." The old fortress, which has been restored as a museum, was part of Newberry Township, Ohio.

Between 1810 and 1816 most Miami County residents moved to Darke County, Ohio for a period of years during the Indian uprisings and returned to Miami County after their safety was more assured by the government. According to census records, in 1820 James was living in Adams Twp., Darke County, Ohio. By 1830, James and his family were back in Newberry Twp., Miami County; then by 1846 they were living in Gibson Twp., Mercer County, Ohio. ('The history of Newberry County Ohio mentions William and John Coats who settled in the area with their sons. William and John were probably his brothers, sons of Big John Coate.') Children of James Coats (b. Jan. 28, 1779) & Mary West (b. April 9, 1780).Joseph Coats, b. abt, 1802 William Coats, b. abt. 1803 Abigale Coats, b. Dec. 24, 1803, b. S.C. Mark Coats, b. May 27, 1806 in So. Carolina. d. 8/15/1883 in Koszta, Iowa. Mary Coats, b. July 10, 1806.Elizabeth Coats, b. February 14, 1809.Sarah Coats, b. June 11, 1812.John C. Coats, b. July 15, 1817 in Covington, Ohio. d. December 13, 1888, Ponca, Nebraska, age 71.James B. Coats, b. May 19, 1825Wesley Coats, b. March 2, 1829.

Now, here is some evidence to consider: James Coats' oldest daughter, Abigale married a man named Abraham Mott and they show up in the 1860 census living in Gibson Township, Mercer County, Ohio. In this census, Abigail shows her place of birth as South Carolina. In addition, living in the same household is probably her mother or mother-in-law, Mary, age 76. (Remember that her husband, James, died in 1856). Mary also shows her place of birth as South Carolina. By 1860, John C. Coats, age 44 year, shows up living in Honey Creek, Iowa. Next door to him is brother, Mark Coats, age 55, who shows his birth place as South Carolina. Finally, in 1880, John C. Coats, age 64, is living in Ionia, Dixon County, Nebraska and in the census he states that both his father and mother were born in South Carolina."

Starting with his daughter Elizabeth, in 1809, they were having children in Miami Co., Ohio. His son John born 1817 is the last child that can be verified as being born in Miami Co., Ohio. He is living in Newberry Twp. in the 1835 tax lists for Miami Co., Ohio. His grandson, Eli Inman Coate was born in 1843 in Covington, Miami Co., Ohio (Covington is north of Ludlow Falls, Miami Co., OH) A James Coate family that appears to fit this James and not the James who is the son of Marmaduke Coate in Miami Co, OH is in the census in 1830, 1840 and 1850 for Miami Co., Ohio (C-1628) In the 1830 Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio census, he is between the age of 50-60 and his wife is of 40-50. They have the following children in their family: 1 son under 5, 1 from 10-15, 1 from 15-20, 1 from 20-30 and 1 daughter of 5-10 and 1 of 15-20. They are living next door to their son Mark Coats. They are living within six farms of John Coats, Sr. and Jr. in Newberry Twp. that is related to Steve Pearson's family. The connection is not known however.

He might be the following James and Mary Coate in the 1850 census records for Clinton County, Ohio, Chester Township. He is 66 years old and Mary Coats is 63 living at the residence of a blacksmith named Seaseney (sp?), probably in Wilmington, Ohio. Both are from South Carolina. If this is him, James would have been born in 1783 and Mary in 1786. Some researchers believe that James died in 1856. He might be buried near Wilmington, Ohio or in Iowa Co., Iowa as others claim. It should be noted though that Mary is listed with a birth date of 4/19/1780 in several 2nd hand sources and at age 76 in the 1860 census where she is living with her daughter, Abigail Mott.

James married Mary WEST on 12 Nov 1801. Mary (daughter of William WEST and Elizabeth HILBORN) was born on 19 Apr 1780 in SC; died after 1860 in Of Mercer, Ohio. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His descendant, James Jefferson is the descendant of Big John by his strongest YDNA match with our group at FTDNA. The only place this M.D. Coats fits is as an actual son of Big John Coats and not as one of his grandsons.

    Notes:

This male child was the only male child of Samuel. He is listed in the 1800 census for Samuel. I am guessing that he is the John Coates named in his fathr's will of 1807, but absent from them by 1817 suggesting he had died.

John married Delilah UNKNOWN before 1807. Delilah died after 1817. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  25. 33.  Gracey COATEGracey COATE Descendancy chart to this point (6.James2, 1.Gentleman1) was born on 20 Aug 1794; died before 1838.

    Notes:

According to Odessa Collins, Gracey married a James Wiley and Elizabeth married James C. Smyley instead. In a transcription of their father's will, however, Gracey is married to James Smyley. The names of the Gracey and James's children matches well with Gracey's family. It is this Gracey and not the Elizabeth who is the d. of Little John, who is married to James Smyley in the area.(E) I have assumed that Gracey died before 1838 when her husband wrote his will that did not include his wife.

Gracey married James SMYLEY in 1816. James was born in 1780 in Of Newberry, Newberry, SC; died in 1838 in , Edgefield Dist., SC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  26. 34.  Mary COATEMary COATE Descendancy chart to this point (6.James2, 1.Gentleman1) was born on 10 Dec 1796 in Of Edgefield, SC; died about 12 Aug 1827 in , Newberry, SC, USA.

    Notes:

Mary is listed between the ages of 16 and 26 in the 1820 census records. (C-1570) If this is true, the earliest she could have been born was 1793. Cordon gives her birth date as 1795. Their first child was born in 1820, so their marriage could easily be from 1816-1819. (C-1599) She died about the time of her last child's birth, Burrell Johnson Coate. He was born on Aug. 12, 1827. (E.O.Collins Bk.) Mary was a cousin of her husband.

Mary married Marmaduke COATE in 1816. Marmaduke (son of Little John COATE and Susannah ENNIS) was born on 10 Oct 1789 in , Newberry, SC, USA; died about 1868 in Grove Hill, Clarke, AL; was buried in Old Clarkesville Cemetery, Clarke, AL. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  27. 35.  John COATSJohn COATS Descendancy chart to this point (6.James2, 1.Gentleman1) was born on 12 Sep 1798 in , Edgefield, SC, USA; died on 16 May 1874 in Near Manchester, Greene, IL.

    Notes:

This John is related to my Marmaduke through DNA evidence of a descendant, but is off by two markers out of 37, meaning they probably have a common ancestor back further than South Carolina.

John Coate was the executor for his fathers will in 1817 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. (C-1570, 1571) He has to be the John Coate who makes several large land transactions in Edgefield Co., SC beginning in 1821 on Turkey Creek, where his father had lived. His spouses name was Martha in several of the later deeds of sale. There is no other John that fits the right age of the two Coate families that sired children in Edgefield District, SC other than this John. (C-1719)

His land transactions in Edgefield include probably all of the following: John Coates bought 212 acres from William Partain on Mar 6, 1821 on Rocky Creek, another 140 from Abram Anderson adjoining his property on Jul 9, 1821, 860 acres from Moor Johnson in 1824, 264 acres from David Nicholson in 1828 on Rocky Creek, 808 from William & John Raiford in 1832 on Turkey Creek, 240 more from Abner Landrum in 1832, and 233 more on Rocky Creek from Belcher in 1833. He sold several pieces of land also. He sold 300 acres to Eliza Bland in 1821 on Turkey Creek, possibly land he inherited from his father. He sold 240 acres to John Wright, Jr. in 1837 and another 837 to Jonathan Weaver on Turkey Creek in that same year. Again, this might include land he inherited from his father. He made $5,500 on his last land sale, which was a very good price at the time. His wife was listed as Martha in both 1837 land sales. He appeared to have no wife in the 1821 land sale. (C-912)

After he sold land in 1837 Edgefield S. C., he moved his family to Ill. and settled around the Schutz mill area (or Hurricane Creek Mills, Patterson, Ill.?) in Greene County. He was one of the first lenders in the area and a very large one at that. Here is the information gleaned from the 1850 census for this family. 1850 Greene Co., IL census, John Coats, age 52, M, Farmer $2000.00 b. S.C. Martha Coats, age 43, F, b. S.C. Leonidas Coats, age 21, M, Miller, b. S.C. John S. Coats, age 18, M, Miller, b. S.C. James, age 16, M, Student, b. S.C. William B., age 15, M, b. S.C. Milton, age 11, M, b. Illinois Mary Jane, age 9 F, b. Illinois Chester, age 6, M, b. Illinois Elizabeth, age 5, F, b. Illinois Jasper, age 2, M., b. Illinois

John was a well respected, honest man according to his obituary and his death even at an elderly age brought shock to his neighbors. He was hard of hearing at the time, and took to walking on the railroad tracks. He was caught nearly unaware by a train engine, unable to hear it until it was too late. (C-2605)

John married Elizabeth Martha OWDEM about 1828 in , Edgefield, SC, USA. Elizabeth was born about 1807 in , , South Carolina; died in 1852 in , Greene, IL, USA; was buried in Wilmington Cemetery, Greene, IL, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  28. 36.  Elizabeth COATEElizabeth COATE Descendancy chart to this point (6.James2, 1.Gentleman1) was born on 3 Jul 1799 in , , SC, USA; died after 1817.

    Notes:

According to Odessa Collins, Elizabeth married James C. Smyley instead of her sister. This would not be correct according to her father's will. However, I do highly suspect that this Elizabeth was married to the Thomas Hart who was given $737.00 in James's will as all the other gifts of money went to siblings or their spouses in the will. Elizabeth was the only daughter that was not given a monetary gift. The daughters were all supposedly given land, but I suspect that in the administration the brothers bought the land and paid their sisters or their spouses in the transaction.

A Mathis family tree has Elizabeth's spouse as Simeon Mathis. They had a daughter named Sarah born in 1820. (E)

    Notes:

According to Odessa Collins, Hannah married John C. Allen. Marilyn gives her spouses name as John Merigu with a marriage in 1795 in Guilford, NC instead. This is not possible as according to her father's bible, she was not born till the year 1800. In either case, Hannah listed as "my single daughter", was paid about $950.00 from her father's estate in 1821 and she was listed as Hannah Coate, not under any married name. When she died in 1883, she was surrounded by her eight living children and many friends, loved and praised by many. (C-1914)

  2. 42.  John COATS, Sr.John COATS, Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (9.William3, 2.Big2, 1.Gentleman1) was born on 20 Jan 1788 in Bush River, Newberry County, South Carolina, United States of America; died on 19 Sep 1878 in Union City, Randolph, IN, USA; was buried in White River Cemetery, Winchester, Randolph, Indiana.

    Notes:

John was living in Covington, Ohio during the War of 1812 according to his obituary. He and his wife were born in South Carolina according to their 1850 census record. One grandson stated he was born in North Carolina and according to another he was born in South Carolina. Of course, this confusion could have been because the part of North Carolina he was born in later became South Carolina in 1788. After his childhood the obituary states that he went into "Teaming" as profession and drove from his parents home to Charleston, South Carolina. This supports him being raised by Big John, as Big John's sons, Wright and James were also into "Teaming".

He also has one of 2 supposed decendants that have been tested for their DNA who is related to 3 other possible Big John descendants via sons William and James. The list of John's children came from one of his grandsons, John R. Coats in a handwritten document in Winchester, VA. By Sep. 5, 1822, John and Sally are living in Randolph Co., Indiana when they sold their land in Miami Co., Ohio to Benjamin Lehman. (C-2568)

John is living in Randolph Co., Indiana in the 1850 census on pg. 63, White River Twp. He was age 63, b. South Carolina. His wife was age 60, b. South Carolina. Children still living with them included Lewis age 21, Andrew age 16 and Dempsey, age 6, all born in Indiana. Living next door to him is son, Joseph Coats, age 23, b. Indiana, married to Esther, age 27, b. Ohio with 2 daughters.
On page 79 of this same census, son William Coats is listed, age 33, b. Ohio married to a Mary (age unreadable). On page 62, son Thomas W. Coats, age 42, b. Ohio with wife Mary age 43 and children. Son Gabrael is on page 64 at age 26, b. Indiana.

There is a remarkable newspaper article on a family reunion of this couple and almost all of their descendants that was dated Jun 22, 1859 in Randolph Co., Indiana. John and Sally were at the head of the table and listed as ages 71 and 70 at the time. All of their present family was sitting in order of their age of birth around them and named in this article. There is also another lovely article on a family reunion that took place sometime in the 1880's after all but Mary "Polly" had passed from this original family. Mary was 74 at the time. There were 180 family members present. It stated that John was a farmer by night and a Justice of the Peace by day, a man of "iron constitution". He and Sally had raised 12 children and lost 2 others at a young age. They were pioneers in Randolph Co., Indiana and oft encountered wild beasts and Indians in their long lives.

John married Sarah "Sally" WRIGHT on 21 Oct 1807 in Miami, Ohio, USA. Sarah (daughter of Thomas WRIGHT and Elizabeth JAY) was born in in NC or SC; died after 1836 in Winchester, Randolph, Indiana, USA; was buried in Randolph County, Indiana, United States of America. Notes:

They settled in Darke Co., Ohio after their marriage. In 1834, they moved out of that section of Ohio and then moved 3 years after that to Pleasant Mound Twp., Bond Co., Illinois.

Sometime after moving to Illinois, many of the children were dissatisfied with the conditions there and joined a cattle drive moving as far away as Wisconsin.

They all returned to their father's property in 1847 where their offspring were still living at the turn of the century. In the 1850 census for Bond, IL the 3 sons they still had living with them ages 24-17 were all born in Ohio. In the 1870 census, she is living with her son, Aaron. Her husband is likely deceased.

Rhoda married Joseph RENCH on 27 Aug 1811 in Miami, Ohio, USA. Notes:

Joseph's place of birth is still in question. It's listed as NC in the 1850 census for Harison Twp., Hoaward Co., IN, or as Newberry or Charleston, SC depending upon the 2nd hand source. Joseph and father appear to be living next to each other in the 1820 census for Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. He and brother Williams were administrators for their father's estate. He and his brother, William moved to Marion Co., Indiana sometime in 1822. His sister, Hettie, was married in Marion Co., Indiana in Mar. of 1823 so she obviously moved with them also. He purchased 80 acres of land in Township 17, North range 4 East, Section 18, W1/2 SE 1/4. He is also listed with a purchase of 80 acres in Brookville District, Marion Co., IN on Aug. 7, 1823. Perhaps this is the same property and that it's just a different stage in the purchase process. He is apparently listed in the 1830 census for Marion Co., Indiana. In 1840, he is in the Hamilton Co., IN census records. Joseph is next listed "of Howard Co., IN" when he purchases 80 acres of land in the same county on Mar. 20, 1849. In the 1850 census for Howard Co., Indiana, Joseph is listed at age 58 and born in North Carolina. Joseph died while working in his fields according to his daughter, Hettie's obituary. Some say this was in Howard or Tipton Co., IN. According to several genealogies at ancestry.com, he died in Kansas instead. He is possibly buried in the Friends Cemetery in New London, Howard Co., IN or in East Union Cemetery in Hamilton Co., IN. The East Union Cemetery is just over the border from Tipton Co., IN where his wife is buried. I could not however, find his burial record in East Union Cemetery transcriptions. (C-1693)

    Notes:

Williard Heiss says he was born in 1786 instead. Mary Helen Pemberton gives his birth date as 1796. He aparently moved with his brother Joseph to Miami Co., OH and then Marion Co., Indiana where he bought 80 acres of land in Brookville District on 1/6/1824. This is probably the same land whose purchase he began on Nov. 16, 1822, in Township 17, North Range 4, East - Washington, E 1/2 SW 1/4 Section 29 for 80 acres. This was about five weeks before his brother Joseph also purchased land. He or his brother are not listed of Miami Co., OH when they made the purchase suggesting they had moved with their families to Marion Co., IN and then found land to purchase. I am assuming that he is the same William Coats of correct age and birthplace for he and his wife living in Harrison, Howard Co., Indiana, USA in the 1850 census. If so, they would likely have had children between their marriage of 1817 and 1827 when son John was born.

William married Charlotte WRIGHT on 30 Oct 1817 in , Clinton, OH, USA. Charlotte (daughter of Thomas WRIGHT and Elizabeth JAY) was born on 6 Dec 1796 in , , SC, USA; died after 1860 in Of Palmyra, Warren Co., Iowa, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Mary was their 10th child according to Richard Morgan and she was born on July 10, 1806. I have, however, found this birth date also listed for the Mary who was the supposed twin sister of Mark Coate, son of James Coate and Mary West. (C-2081) Plus in an Ancestry World Tree submission by Don Coats, they give her birth date as 1798 instead and her marriage date as 1817 in Miami Co., Ohio. The marriage date of 1817 did take place in Miami Co., Ohio If she was born in 1806, she would have only been age 11. I therefore, assume that the 1798 birth date is more likely to be correct.

Mary married George BEANBLOSSOM on 4 Sep 1817 in , Miami, OH, USA. George was born about 1795 in , Miami, OH, USA; died after 1860 in Of Twp. 12, Range 7, Macoupin, IL, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Here is a timeline of John's life. He is the ancestor of Steve Pearson's Coate lineage.

    1796 or 1804

    Born in SC 1820

Probably the John Sr. Coats living in Union Twp., Miami Co., OH somewhat close to several sons of Marmaduke Coate

Jul 3 or 9/23 1826 Marries Patsy Birely

1827 In Tax Lists for Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH

1830 In Census for Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH listed as Jr. "John Coats Jr is living with one male between 0 to 5, two males between 5 to 10, one male between 30 to 40, one female between 0 to 5, one female between 10 to 15, and lastly one female between 20 to 30." He lived two doors from his wife's parents.

1834 Daughter Susannah born in Ohio (d. 1912 in OH, m. Silas Pearson)

1840 In Census for Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH1843 He and wife are charter members of the Greenville Creek Church of Christ. There is an adjoining graveyard where they might be buried, but no gravestone exists for them there.

1850 He and his family are living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH in the 1850 census records, page 404. John Coats, 54, S.C., farmer, Martha, 48, VA., Susan, 16, Ohio William, 12, Ohio, George, 10, OH, Mark, 8, OH, Hijah, 6, Ohio (E) Brother George is also living in that same township. Neither had any value listed under the real estate column and neither are in the deed records for Miami Co., Ohio suggesting that they didn't own their land. (E) (C-1630)1864

His estate (in which there was no land) took place in Darke Co., Ohio. His administrator was appointed Oct. 10, 1864. His estate record filed on Nov. 12, 1864 is short because he obviously was quite poor. It is quoted and summarized by Steve Pearson and was available at Garst where it had been sent from it's original recording. ("There being no property of any kind whatever to set off to the widow Martha Coats ( there being no minor children ) we certify that she will need, and was set off to her for one years maintenance in money the sum of, Two Hundred Dollars $(200)" ( then signed by the three appraisers ) then it goes on to say: "There being no personal estate of any kind whatever belongs to said estate except a claim on the united states, under the bounty act of 1861 and back pay allowed to said decedent in his lifetime ( but not paid ) an recount? of the services and death of Hijah Coats in the military services of the United States and we do appraise said claim at one hundred and thirty nine dollars..." The administrator of the estate was D.S. Davenport. I safely assume this to have been John's son-in-law, David S. Davenport who married daughter Margaret Coat(e)(s).

John married Martha (Patsy) RUDY on 23 Sep 1826 in , Miami, OH, USA. Martha (daughter of Samuel RUDY and Sarah (Sally) MCGUIRE) was born about 1802 in , , VA, USA; died after 1864 in , Darke, OH, Usa?. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Some data says that Rebecca Coats was married to Bayvill Hanson in 1818. I believe this is a misinterpretation of the spelling of his name. I say this because there is a Rebecca Coats, b. abt 1797 in SC, who married a Barzilla Harrison in Miami Co., OH in 1818. The dates and the names are a match. Plus if her husband was Barzilla, he is listed in the 1827 tax lists for Miami Co., OH living in Newberry Twp.

Rebecca married Barzilla HARRISON on 10 Aug 1818 in , Miami, OH, USA. Barzilla died after 1827 in Of Newberry Twp., Miami, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

In 1835, Susan and her husband, Peter Spillers are living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH near sons of John and Susan Coate and near possible sons of Stephen Marmaduke Coate. She could be a child of either family as far as I can tell. She and her family apparently later moved to Randolph County, Indiana and in the 1850's to Cooper Co., Missouri. Her birth and death dates come from her cemetery stone in Missouri.

The following info is provided by Jack Waddell. "In the Randolph County, Stoney Creek Township, Indiana Federal Census of 1850 she is listed as Susan Spillers right below her husband, Peter Spillers on page 005, dwelling 96, family 96; There, Peter is listed as being 49 and Susan 51. Susan's age in the census conforms to the date of birth listed on her tombstone and Peter Spiller's tombstone in Wiscotta Cemetery, Redfield, Union Township, Dallas County, Iowa has the date 28 November 1799, which does not quite conform to the reported age in the census; but in either case, one should not expect absolute correctness of memory etc. They both have their places of birth as South Carolina. "

Susanna married Peter Julius SPILLERS on 13 May 1820 in Newberry Twp., Miami, OH, USA. Peter was born on 28 Nov 1800 in , Newberry, SC, USA; died in 1883 in Of Missouri. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

George was married 4 times and was a (Christian Church) minister. He along with his brother John were founding members of the Greenville Creek Church of Christ established on Aug. 9, 1943. He is likely to be the George Coats who was living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH in the 1850 U.S. census. After he married Martha Martindale as his last wife, he and his family moved to Benton Co., Iowa. Sometime around 1859 they lived in Benton Co., Iowa and sold land in Miami Co., Ohio to John (Harstry). Samuel J. Coate was a witness to this deed. (C-2564) Martha and George had 4 more children, 2 of which lived to adulthood. One of these children, Ranalden Lycurgus Coats, went with Martha to southern California after George died. The other surviving child (also a boy) lived in the Chicago area. George's family bible is in the possession of Eddie Rodriguez, a step-grandson of George.

    Notes:

Both Samuel and Mary were on a deed record for Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH in 1859. There are many other records that could apply to this family, but it appears that they are living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH census records from 1830 to 1860. Samuel is likely the one buried in 1877 in Miami Co., Ohio. Mary is possibly the Mary Hoover who died in 1873 in Miami Co., Ohio. Richard Morgan has 2nd hand information that states her husband was Robert Ramage, b. in 1788 instead of Samuel Hoover.

Mary married Samuel HOOVER on 24 Jul 1828 in , Miami, OH, USA. Samuel was born on 31 Dec 1807 in , , OH, USA; died in 1877 in Of Covington, Newberry Twp., Miami, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  31. 71.  Marmaduke "Mark" COATSMarmaduke "Mark" COATS Descendancy chart to this point (14.James3, 2.Big2, 1.Gentleman1) was born on 10 Jul 1806 in , , SC, USA; died on 15 Aug 1883 in Koszta, Honey Creek Twp., Iowa, Iowa, USA; was buried in Irving (North Of) Belle Plaine, Benton Co, IA.

    Notes:

Mark is on the Newberry twp., Miami Co., OH tax lists for 1835. He's located in the same place in the 1830 and 1840 census records also. In the 1830 census, he is living next door to a James Coats who is between the age of 50 and 60. I'm assuming this is his father in Newberry Twp, Miami Co, OH P46. In 1840, he is listed as Mark Couts, Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH, p370. In 1850 his last name is spelled Coates and he is living in Mercer Co., Ohio. In 1850, his name is spelled Coates and he is living in Recovery Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio, p. 307. It is estimated that he and his family and brother John C.'s family moved to Honey Creek Twp., Iowa sbout 1854-55 where he is listed in the 1860 - 1880 census records. The 1880 census lists him as living in the town of Koszta in Honey Creek Twp. and lists his birthplace as South Carolina. In the 1900 census, his daughters Fannie and Susanna list their father born in Virginia and their mother in Pennsylvania. On May 08, 1860 for $25 he deeded Honey Creek Twp about 2 acres for the Koszta cemetery that he and his wife were later buried in. Guy Coates gives his birth date as May 27, 1806 and his possible twin, Mary's birth date as July 10, 1806. He is living in Iowa in the 1860 and 1880 census records where he lists his place of birth and that of his parents as in South Carolina.

Their children were: I) John Wyland Coats, b. November 03, 1828, Rensselaer Twp?, Miami Co, Ohio; d. September 03, 1891, Madison, Dane Co, Wisconsin; II) Abraham W. Coats, b.
