1. | ![]() Notes: This Coate's group's lineage is proven back to Henry Coate "The Elder" b. abt 1595 who was the son of Marmaduke and Marie Somner Coate of Bridgeport and Curry Rivel England via a YDNA match to a cousin in Australia. We know from our Coats YDNA group that Gentleman John is absolutely a descendant from Samuel and Mary Saunder's Coate so the theory that his father is William is still reasonable. William was after all the only other son of Samuel and Mary Saunders Coate that ended up in South Carolina near the town of Newberry. We also know that his brother, Henry's sons as recorded in Quaker records do not account for any of William's sons. Gentleman married Mary UNKNOWN before 1754. Mary was born before 1735; died after 1799. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

2. | ![]() ![]() Notes: YDNA now clearly indicates that Big John is the son of Gentleman John through 3 of Big John's descendants. No other descendants from any other Coats in our group have as much shared DNA and such a high probality that they are father and son. By estimated ages and place, this is likely also. Check out our YDNA group at http://www.ancestrees.com/henrycoatebabt1595ydnagroup.html that indicates they have a 97% chance of being closely related within 8 generations of descendants. That's as lovely a chart as you can get for YDNA probabilities between father and son of this time period for 37 points. At last, we finally know who Big John's father is! 4. | ![]() ![]() Notes: In 1790, this Samuel is the one who has a wife and six daughters. (C-1859) Samuel was born before 1758 as his first daughter's estimated birth date is 1775. He is highly likely to be the Samuel who bought 150 acres in 1774 in Newberry Co., NC and then sold it to J. Gardner in 1775. In 1788, he purchased 192 acres of land on Beaver Dam Creek on a branch of Bush River. In 1797, his brother John Sr. purchases 28 adjacent acres. He is likely to be the Samuel who died in 1807, lived in Bush River MM, SC at some point in his life and married Mary. (C-556, p. 85) This is supported by the information on Gentleman John's son Samuel in Emma O. Collins book. It doesn't give the source for it's information, but it lists 5 unknown daughters with their spouses names which came from Samuel's will dated 1807. That means 5 of his daughters were married and all likely above age 18 before 1807. The daughters ages are estimated from census records and they might be out of order with whom they married. As I find the ages of whom they've married I'll be able to better guestimate which daughter's age went with which husband named in their father's will. Family/Spouse: Mary WORTHINGTON. 6. | ![]() ![]() Notes: It is this James of Edgefield, son of Gentleman John, that is related to Marmaduke Coate (1738-1822) although the match is not exact. They have a varience of 2 points out of 37 DNA points. We do not know their first common ancestor with certainty at this time, though a theorectical ancestral lineage is presented here. The ages of James and his children come from his family bible in the possession of a descendant. The James who married Elizabeth Scott made his will in 1817. (C-1544, 1550, C-1555, 1560) It is abstracted herewith. Edgefield Co., SC, Will, p. 389 James Coats proven Nov.7, 1817. Legatees; son John Coats, land where I live, granted James Scott, 13 May 1786. Paid Hannah Coats $958.00. paid James Smyly in full $1082.00 1821 John Coats Executor. James is not in the 1790 SC census records. He first appears in the 1800 census in Edgefield Co., South Carolina. In it, he and his wife are listed between ages 26 and 45. They have 1 son under age 10 and 3 daughters under age ten. (p. 186). (C-1568, 1638) James, husband of Elizabeth Scott, is the James who bought 300 acres of land from Stephen Williams on Mar 12, 1800 on Turkey Creek in Edgefield District, South Carolina. The land had originally been owned by Jones, Hall and Scott. In Apr. of 1805 he bought 6 additional acres adjoining his land from Armstead Hall. In 1806, he purchased another 50 acres on Turkey Creek from William Partain. In 1807, he is given additional land on Turkey Creek by his father-in-law, James Scott, in his will. His last purchase of land appears to have been on Sep. 1808. He added 199 more acres on the Turkey Creek waters of the Savannah attached to his property from George Wilson (his wife's nephew). (C-912) By 1810 James is again in the Edgfield Co., SC census. One of his sons is under age 10, one is between 10 and 16, and he is over age 45. He has two daughters under age ten, 2 from 10 to 16 and 1 from 16 to 26 years old. His wife appears to be deceased by 1810. Note that he has one more daughter listed here than is named in his will. According to his family bible, that would be Sarah. (C-1569, E) James was of Edgefield at the time and married to an Elizabeth. For years, it has been thought that he was James Roberts married to Josephine Elizabeth Webster, but a bible transcription for them lists James Robert's birth date at 1786 and his marriage date to Elizabeth Webster as 1807. How did he have a wife named Elizabeth in the 1805 deed? If he were James Robert, he would have been born very late compared to his oldest brother Samuel being at least 30 years apart. John W. Coats suggested that James, husband of Elizabeth Scott Coates, of Edgefield was instead the son of Gentleman John. This fit is solid. The James of Edgefield on Turkey Creek is purchasing land there by 1800. He inherited 41 acres from his stated father, Gentleman John which he then sold to his brother, William. "NEWBERRY COURT RECORD: 15 Aug 1805: James Coats of Edgefield District to William Coats of Newberry for $101.00, a tract of 41 acres in Newberry on waters of Bush River called Mathew Creek, which was originally granted to Christian Kinder for 250 acres, and by him to John Coate, deceased. Bequeached by John Coate deceased, to his son James.Signed 15 Aug 1805Recorded 25 Jan 1806Witness: J. B. Mitchell, John Coate. James of Edgefield was born between 1755 and 1765 according to census records and would be the correct age to be Gentleman John's son, James. He married an Elizabeth before the 1805 deed, and he is the only James that can be verified as living in Edgefield at the time. James, Mary and John were three of James and Elizabeth Scott's Coate's children's names that are the same as this family. Lastly, it is verified that James is married to Elizabeth Scott in Edgfield County records according to descendant and researcher, Gary G. Coates of White Hall, Greene Co., Illinois. (C-1549, 1953) This James has also been connected to be the son of William Sr. who died in St. George's Parish, SC near Charleston in 1753. This absolutely doesn't fit with this James who was born in 1765 according to his bible and census info. James married Elizabeth SCOTT in 1792. Elizabeth (daughter of James SCOTT and Hannah BEALE) died before 1817. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

8. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Collins states that she believes this Rebekah married James Coate who was the son of Big John. However, Big John's son James is the James that is attributed as having married Mary West instead. |
9. | ![]() ![]() Notes: It is highly likely that this William is the son of Big John. Big John's son William had a wife named Mary who witnessed her husband's sale of land in Newberry, SC in 1807. He is often stated to have the same children as attributed to this William and Mary who lived in Miami Co., Ohio. There is no overlap in timelines if he is the same William who was the probable son of Big John. There is also now much DNA evidence that this line goes through Big John. Three tests through William closely match a test through Big John's son James named in his will and to Wright Coate whom you'll see mentioned below. They were all said to be his sons in Summeral's early Coate research and in Randolph Co., IL books. William bought 100 acres of land in 1785 from John Wright, Jr. that adjoined Big John's land north of Newberry, South Carolina. He is likely to be the William Coats who was listed on the same page as Big John in the 1800 census records for Newberry Co., South Carolina. He and his wife were between the ages of 26 and 45. He had 2 sons under age 11, one between 10 and 16 and 4 daughters under age 11 and 1 from ten to 16 at that time. In 1799, he bought land on Beaverdam, on the waters of the Saluda from Elisha Oneal. He sold part if not all of this land in 1807 to James Brooks. Wright Coate (his brother?) was a witness to this sale. On Nov. 2, 1802, Wright Coats sold him 150 acres that adjoined his first purchase. He appears to have moved to Miami Co., Ohio by about 1807. In 1810, his "adopted" brother John (named as a brother in "The History of Miami County Ohio", p. 462) gives him guardianship of his children including a son named Henry born in 1799. I am calling John adopted, because everyone in his matching DNA group are not related to all of the other Big John Coate sons. According to "Beers History of Miami County" on Newberry Township, William and John were the 2nd and 3rd settlers of the northwest quarter of Section 30, Newberry Twp. along with son-in-law (i.e. Daniel Wright) of William Coats. Beers called it the Upper Piqua region where wars with the Indians meant that Col. John Johnston requested Captain George Buchanan to send a detail of men to protect certain public property and harvest the wheat at the beginning of the war (about 1812). William and John Coats (This could be his brother or son John who came with him to Ohio in "The History of Miami County) settled next to Michael Ingle in Stillwater. Will's son in law, Daniel Wright lived nearby at the corner of what is now Main and Wright St. in Covington, Ohio. According to that same history, they sold this land in 1822 when William and family moved to Indiana. "Pioneer Ancestors of Members of Society of Indiana Pioneers", states that William Coats who settled in Marion Co., Indiana in 1822, was born in South Carolina about 1768 before moving to Ohio and then Indiana. Specifically, "William received a patent in Miami County for the NE 1/4 of Sec. 30, Twp. 8, Range 5E (159.06 acres) on 28 Jan 1811. He and Polly sold part of that land to their son-in-law Daniel Wright 25 Oct. 1813. They sold more to James Dickey on 15 May 1820 and the rest on 20 July 1822 to James Thompson." Their son John had a section of it which he also sold in 1822. "On 16 Nov 1822, William bought 80 acres of land (E 1/2 NW 1/4 Sec. 29) in Marion County, Washington Twp. IN. (See Marion County, Indiana Records by J.E. Darlington). His son Joseph Coats also bought two parcels of land in Washington Township and his son William Coats Jr. bought 80 acres on the same day his father did in the same area." (Quotes are from John H. Coats, Email, 2004) "The History of Randolph Co., IN" says he was born in Paisley, (Scotland) and was the son of Phillip. The book was written in 1882 and would have been the kind of book being published at the time that interviewed family members (living grandchildren of William) to highlight a communities citizens. Errors were often made in these publications as family heresay was involved. In this case, someone probably was hoping that they were descendants of the wealthy Coate Thread company in Paisley, Scotland. Some of these descendants could have been the Coate's that hired a genealogist in the early 1900's to connect them to the Coats thread company family. She/he did not find any proof but in reality also gave a highly questionable genealogy for them known now as "The Old Coates Genealogy" that is riddled with errors. What I do believe is accurate from the history are the names of William and his children, all of whom would have been known by living kin at the time. The children named in this source were John, William, Joseph, Hepsy Wright, Rhoda Wrench, Hetty Harrison and ? Beanblossom. It failed to mention an Elizabeth, Sampson or Henry that I've also seen mentioned in this family. Out of these 3, I personally believe that Elizabeth is also William's child. These children's names can be verified by the following patterns. All of the spouses it mentioned are verified in marriage records for Indiana and Ohio. William moved to Miami Co., Ohio about 1807. (C-1065, 1898) He lived next to his son Joseph in the 1820 census for Miami Co., Ohio. He was listed at over age 45 in this record with one son between the age of 10 and 16 (Henry), plus two females age 16-26 (Hetty and Hepsy) in his household. His son Joseph was age 26 to 45 with two sons under age 10 and a wife age 16-26. (E) His son-in-law, Daniel Wright also lived in Newberry Twp. with a very large family within a few dozen homes of his in this census. Before William died, he and his sons, William and Joseph, purchased land in Marion Co., Indiana records in 1822. His daughter, "Hettie" apparently moved with them and married in that county in 1823. The Randolph Co., Indiana History also stated that family reunions for the family still took place in 1888 in Randolph Co. that included descendants of William's sons, William and Joseph, who had moved elsewhere (Marion and Howard Co., IN), as well as his son John who had moved to Randolph Co., Indiana. William's children are also listed the same way in Willard Heiss's and Mary Helen Pemberton's work. William Coats died by Sept. 1826 in Marion Co., IN without leaving a will. Pages 146-7 of the Inventory and Sale Book A for Marion County, IN give the appraisement and inventory by his administrators/sons, Joseph and William Coats. Buyers at the sale include Joseph Coats, William Coats and William Sr's son-in-law Daniel Wright. Some second hand sources say he died on Jan. 16, 1828 instead. The next question is how is William related to Marmaduke Coate of Newberry, SC? There is the possibility that William is the grandson of William or his brother Henry of Hunterdon Co., NJ and Newberry Co., South Carolina. We believe we know most of the descendants of Henry but have only figured out a couple of William's likely sons and grandchildren so far. By age and place he'd fit into the family through one of these two Coate's also. The supporting evidence for this later possibility is that the current day descendants of William through his son Joseph had the clear family tradition that they were related to Marmaduke Coate of SC who is the son of Henry. Their DNA testing also is within 1 point out of 36 points of a match - the closest match to Marmaduke (b. 1738) so far. What doesn't match thought is William's brother John.. current day descendants of John are not genetically related to William throwing us a curve ball. One likely theory is that William was the son of Big John, but John (William's supposed brother) was simply adopted by Big John. William married Mary "Polly" JAY before 1785. Mary (daughter of William JAY, Jr. * and Elizabeth LNU) was born on 11 Jan 1777 in Newberry, South Carolina; died on 3 Mar 1822 in Of Miami, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

10. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Wright's birth date could easily have been before 1770. He is the only Wright Coats we know of in the area, and he is on one census, 1800's. In it he and his wife are between 26 and 45. They have 2 sons age ten and under, and one daughter from 10-16. According to Daphne they also probably have Mary's sister Rebecca, and mother who had been widowed that year living with them. In the year 1800, Wright Coate (and probably his wife Mary Coate) made purchases of land at Nathan Perry's estate sale in the year 1800. Nathan Perry lived very near the Chandlers and therefore near land belonging to Gentleman John Coates. Wright Coate sold land to his brother, William in 1802 in Newberry Co. The following court record applies to this Wright and several of his brothers as well as a freed slave of his father's named Jesse.LDS Film # 24219 FiledJune 19, 1818 Box 45, No. 1Daniel McMahan Decree -Bill for Injunction Judge W. ThompsonVsJohn O'NeallDaniel McMahan employed Wright Coats and Jesse Coats (a man of color) to carry two loads of cotton to Charleston and to bring back two loads of dry goods. Wright Coats and Jesse Coats did not return to Newberry when expected and Daniel McMahan became apprehensive. He set out to find Wright Coats and Jesse Coats leaving instructions with his clerk Pendleton Pope that if Wright Coats and Jesse Coats returned in his absence, not to pay them. They did return in his absence and Wright Coats received a note from Pendleton Pope for the amount he would be paid after deducting for some goods he took from the store. He said it would be inconvenient for him to return at a later date and that he would send some other person in his place to collect the money. Afterwards Jesse Coats and James Coats applied for the money due to both Wright Coates and Jesse Coats and all money owed was given to him. Jesse Coats and James Coats (brother of Wright Coats) then went to the home of William Lesley in Newberry and gave Wright Coats his portion of the payment. Wright Coates sometime afterwards sued Daniel McMahan for more payment. Daniel McMahan in turn sued Wright Coates but before the trial Wright Coates died leaving John O'Neall as his executor. Daniel McMahan had petitioned the Court to dismiss the Bill because of fraud on the part of William Coates and to have the estate of Wright Coates pay for the Court costs. Wright witnessed the sale of his brother William Coate's land in 1807 and verified that William's wife, Mary, had given her consent to the sale. Wright had his will administered in 1808 or 1809 in Newberry Co., SC with his administrators listed as Mary Coate (wife) and J. O'Neal. His will starts with the words, "In the name of God, Amen" which indicate he was not a Quaker. (C-266, 1403, C-1479, 1942) Wright married Mary GAUNT after 1789. Mary (daughter of Israel GAUNT and Hannah SPENCER) was born on 10 Nov 1772; died on 10 Nov 1848 in , Giles, TN, USA; was buried in Old Gilbert Cemetery, Giles, TN, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

13. | ![]() ![]() Notes: This John is sometimes listed as the son of Gentleman John. No proof exists for this. John and his wife were having children before 1796 when they had son John. Their daughter, Rachel, was born first. They had 12 or 13 children total, the last born in 1818. (C-1320, 1630) In the 1800 census, John is possibly listed on page 69 of the Newberry Census. He and his wife were between the ages of 16 and 26. They had 2 sons under age 10 and 3 daughters in the same age range. The youngest they would likely be with 5 children is 21, giving them a birth date range of 1774-1779, with 1774 being the more likely.... or he could be the John Coats of Laurens Co., SC in 1800 with 1 male under 10 [possibly John Jr.?], and one male 26-45 [John himself?]; 4 females under 10 [Rachel, Rebecca, Susan, ?], a female 26-45 [wife-Susan?Brock?] and 1 female over 45[a mother or a mother-in-law?] as Jack Waddell theorizes. He is not in the 1820 Ohio census, and it appears that his son John is living as the head of household with siblings or hired workers and possibly his mother living with him: 1 male 16/26 [himself]; 1 male 10/16; 1 male 16/18; 1 female 10/16; 1 female 16/26; 1 female over 45; 4 in agr. He is in the 1830 census records again at age between 60-70, his wife is between 50-60. They have 2 sons living with them between 20-30 and 2 daughters aged 10-15, and 15-20. They are living next door to their son John, Jr. in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. John, Sr. is missing from the 1835 quad census suggesting that he had died or had moved by that time. Every child from George on was born in Ohio. Those previous to him were born in SC according to their census records. Several of the children were listed as members of the Greenville Creek Christian Church in Miami Co. or Darke Co., Ohio. They included George, John, Patsy (Daughter-in-Law), and Lucinda. (C-1958) It is not known with certainty that his wife's name was Susan Brock. John married Susana BROCK after 1788. 14. | ![]() ![]() Notes: James is given land in his father's will written in 1803. He is obviously of an age to receive the land at his father's death estimating his birth age to be before 1787 as landowners could be age 16 or older at that time. According to "The Annals of Newberry" James, son of Big John and a John Turner, Jr. were involved with the death of a William Cox. William apparently got in a fight with them over a fishing hole around the Saluda River and died in the scuffle. The trial for murder took place in the March 1807 court. John Turner, Jr. was sentenced to the pillary and James fled the state. (C-1838, 1839, 1917, 1922) Most accounts state that nothing further was ever heard of James Coats. According to some descendants, this is the James Coate b. 1779 (from PA) married to Mary West who is the son of Stephen Marmaduke Coate and Martha Ann Matthews. Guy Coates and others believe he is the son of Big John Coate instead. DNA matches with descendants of son Wright, and possible son William are a match to this theory. In a transcription of their father's will, however, Gracey is married to James Smyley. The names of the Gracey and James's children matches well with Gracey's family. It is this Gracey and not the Elizabeth who is the d. of Little John, who is married to James Smyley in the area.(E) I have assumed that Gracey died before 1838 when her husband wrote his will that did not include his wife. Gracey married James SMYLEY in 1816. James was born in 1780 in Of Newberry, Newberry, SC; died in 1838 in , Edgefield Dist., SC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
34. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Mary is listed between the ages of 16 and 26 in the 1820 census records. (C-1570) If this is true, the earliest she could have been born was 1793. Cordon gives her birth date as 1795. Their first child was born in 1820, so their marriage could easily be from 1816-1819. (C-1599) She died about the time of her last child's birth, Burrell Johnson Coate. He was born on Aug. 12, 1827. (E.O.Collins Bk.) Mary was a cousin of her husband. Mary married Marmaduke COATE in 1816. Marmaduke (son of Little John COATE and Susannah ENNIS) was born on 10 Oct 1789 in , Newberry, SC, USA; died about 1868 in Grove Hill, Clarke, AL; was buried in Old Clarkesville Cemetery, Clarke, AL. 36. | ![]() ![]() Notes: According to Odessa Collins, Elizabeth married James C. Smyley instead of her sister. This would not be correct according to her father's will. However, I do highly suspect that this Elizabeth was married to the Thomas Hart who was given $737.00 in James's will as all the other gifts of money went to siblings or their spouses in the will. Elizabeth was the only daughter that was not given a monetary gift. The daughters were all supposedly given land, but I suspect that in the administration the brothers bought the land and paid their sisters or their spouses in the transaction. |
37. | ![]() ![]() Notes: According to Odessa Collins, Hannah married John C. Allen. Marilyn gives her spouses name as John Merigu with a marriage in 1795 in Guilford, NC instead. This is not possible as according to her father's bible, she was not born till the year 1800. In either case, Hannah listed as "my single daughter", was paid about $950.00 from her father's estate in 1821 and she was listed as Hannah Coate, not under any married name. When she died in 1883, she was surrounded by her eight living children and many friends, loved and praised by many. (C-1914) Hannah married Major John C. ALLEN after 1821. Major (son of Ossamus W. ALLEN) died in 1854 in , Edgefield, SC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

42. | ![]() ![]() Notes: John was living in Covington, Ohio during the War of 1812 according to his obituary. He and his wife were born in South Carolina according to their 1850 census record. One grandson stated he was born in North Carolina and according to another he was born in South Carolina. Of course, this confusion could have been because the part of North Carolina he was born in later became South Carolina in 1788. After his childhood the obituary states that he went into "Teaming" as profession and drove from his parents home to Charleston, South Carolina. This supports him being raised by Big John, as Big John's sons, Wright and James were also into "Teaming". John married Sarah "Sally" WRIGHT on 21 Oct 1807 in Miami, Ohio, USA. Sarah (daughter of Thomas WRIGHT and Elizabeth JAY) was born in in NC or SC; died after 1836 in Winchester, Randolph, Indiana, USA; was buried in Randolph County, Indiana, United States of America. 44. | ![]() ![]() Family/Spouse: William RAMSEY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
45. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Joseph's place of birth is still in question. It's listed as NC in the 1850 census for Harison Twp., Hoaward Co., IN, or as Newberry or Charleston, SC depending upon the 2nd hand source. Joseph and father appear to be living next to each other in the 1820 census for Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. He and brother Williams were administrators for their father's estate. He and his brother, William moved to Marion Co., Indiana sometime in 1822. His sister, Hettie, was married in Marion Co., Indiana in Mar. of 1823 so she obviously moved with them also. He purchased 80 acres of land in Township 17, North range 4 East, Section 18, W1/2 SE 1/4. He is also listed with a purchase of 80 acres in Brookville District, Marion Co., IN on Aug. 7, 1823. Perhaps this is the same property and that it's just a different stage in the purchase process. He is apparently listed in the 1830 census for Marion Co., Indiana. In 1840, he is in the Hamilton Co., IN census records. Joseph is next listed "of Howard Co., IN" when he purchases 80 acres of land in the same county on Mar. 20, 1849. In the 1850 census for Howard Co., Indiana, Joseph is listed at age 58 and born in North Carolina. Joseph died while working in his fields according to his daughter, Hettie's obituary. Some say this was in Howard or Tipton Co., IN. According to several genealogies at ancestry.com, he died in Kansas instead. He is possibly buried in the Friends Cemetery in New London, Howard Co., IN or in East Union Cemetery in Hamilton Co., IN. The East Union Cemetery is just over the border from Tipton Co., IN where his wife is buried. I could not however, find his burial record in East Union Cemetery transcriptions. (C-1693) Joseph married Elizabeth A. COPPOCK on 6 Nov 1816 in , Miami, OH, USA. Elizabeth (daughter of John COPPOCK and Mary Ann TEAGUE) was born about 16 May 1797 in , , SC, USA; died on 6 Apr 1864 in Ekin, Tipton, IN, USA; was buried in Archibald Small Cemetery, Jefferson Twp., Tipton, IN, USA. 47. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Williard Heiss says he was born in 1786 instead. Mary Helen Pemberton gives his birth date as 1796. He aparently moved with his brother Joseph to Miami Co., OH and then Marion Co., Indiana where he bought 80 acres of land in Brookville District on 1/6/1824. This is probably the same land whose purchase he began on Nov. 16, 1822, in Township 17, North Range 4, East - Washington, E 1/2 SW 1/4 Section 29 for 80 acres. This was about five weeks before his brother Joseph also purchased land. He or his brother are not listed of Miami Co., OH when they made the purchase suggesting they had moved with their families to Marion Co., IN and then found land to purchase. I am assuming that he is the same William Coats of correct age and birthplace for he and his wife living in Harrison, Howard Co., Indiana, USA in the 1850 census. If so, they would likely have had children between their marriage of 1817 and 1827 when son John was born. William married Charlotte WRIGHT on 30 Oct 1817 in , Clinton, OH, USA. Charlotte (daughter of Thomas WRIGHT and Elizabeth JAY) was born on 6 Dec 1796 in , , SC, USA; died after 1860 in Of Palmyra, Warren Co., Iowa, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

48. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Mary was their 10th child according to Richard Morgan and she was born on July 10, 1806. I have, however, found this birth date also listed for the Mary who was the supposed twin sister of Mark Coate, son of James Coate and Mary West. (C-2081) Plus in an Ancestry World Tree submission by Don Coats, they give her birth date as 1798 instead and her marriage date as 1817 in Miami Co., Ohio. The marriage date of 1817 did take place in Miami Co., Ohio If she was born in 1806, she would have only been age 11. I therefore, assume that the 1798 birth date is more likely to be correct. Mary married George BEANBLOSSOM on 4 Sep 1817 in , Miami, OH, USA. George was born about 1795 in , Miami, OH, USA; died after 1860 in Of Twp. 12, Range 7, Macoupin, IL, USA. I say this because there is a Rebecca Coats, b. abt 1797 in SC, who married a Barzilla Harrison in Miami Co., OH in 1818. The dates and the names are a match. Plus if her husband was Barzilla, he is listed in the 1827 tax lists for Miami Co., OH living in Newberry Twp. Rebecca married Barzilla HARRISON on 10 Aug 1818 in , Miami, OH, USA. 62. | ![]() ![]() Notes: In 1835, Susan and her husband, Peter Spillers are living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH near sons of John and Susan Coate and near possible sons of Stephen Marmaduke Coate. She could be a child of either family as far as I can tell. She and her family apparently later moved to Randolph County, Indiana and in the 1850's to Cooper Co., Missouri. Her birth and death dates come from her cemetery stone in Missouri. Susanna married Peter Julius SPILLERS on 13 May 1820 in Newberry Twp., Miami, OH, USA. 66. | ![]() ![]() Notes: George was married 4 times and was a (Christian Church) minister. He along with his brother John were founding members of the Greenville Creek Church of Christ established on Aug. 9, 1943. He is likely to be the George Coats who was living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH in the 1850 U.S. census. After he married Martha Martindale as his last wife, he and his family moved to Benton Co., Iowa. Sometime around 1859 they lived in Benton Co., Iowa and sold land in Miami Co., Ohio to John (Harstry). Samuel J. Coate was a witness to this deed. (C-2564) Martha and George had 4 more children, 2 of which lived to adulthood. One of these children, Ranalden Lycurgus Coats, went with Martha to southern California after George died. The other surviving child (also a boy) lived in the Chicago area. George's family bible is in the possession of Eddie Rodriguez, a step-grandson of George. There are many other records that could apply to this family, but it appears that they are living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH census records from 1830 to 1860. Samuel is likely the one buried in 1877 in Miami Co., Ohio. Mary is possibly the Mary Hoover who died in 1873 in Miami Co., Ohio. Richard Morgan has 2nd hand information that states her husband was Robert Ramage, b. in 1788 instead of Samuel Hoover. Mary married Samuel HOOVER on 24 Jul 1828 in , Miami, OH, USA. 71. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Mark is on the Newberry twp., Miami Co., OH tax lists for 1835. He's located in the same place in the 1830 and 1840 census records also. In the 1830 census, he is living next door to a James Coats who is between the age of 50 and 60. I'm assuming this is his father in Newberry Twp, Miami Co, OH P46. In 1840, he is listed as Mark Couts, Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH, p370. In 1850 his last name is spelled Coates and he is living in Mercer Co., Ohio. In 1850, his name is spelled Coates and he is living in Recovery Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio, p. 307. It is estimated that he and his family and brother John C.'s family moved to Honey Creek Twp., Iowa sbout 1854-55 where he is listed in the 1860 - 1880 census records. The 1880 census lists him as living in the town of Koszta in Honey Creek Twp. and lists his birthplace as South Carolina. In the 1900 census, his daughters Fannie and Susanna list their father born in Virginia and their mother in Pennsylvania. On May 08, 1860 for $25 he deeded Honey Creek Twp about 2 acres for the Koszta cemetery that he and his wife were later buried in. Guy Coates gives his birth date as May 27, 1806 and his possible twin, Mary's birth date as July 10, 1806. He is living in Iowa in the 1860 and 1880 census records where he lists his place of birth and that of his parents as in South Carolina.
