1. | ![]() Notes: This John is sometimes listed as the son of Gentleman John. No proof exists for this. John and his wife were having children before 1796 when they had son John. Their daughter, Rachel, was born first. They had 12 or 13 children total, the last born in 1818. (C-1320, 1630) In the 1800 census, John is possibly listed on page 69 of the Newberry Census. He and his wife were between the ages of 16 and 26. They had 2 sons under age 10 and 3 daughters in the same age range. The youngest they would likely be with 5 children is 21, giving them a birth date range of 1774-1779, with 1774 being the more likely.... or he could be the John Coats of Laurens Co., SC in 1800 with 1 male under 10 [possibly John Jr.?], and one male 26-45 [John himself?]; 4 females under 10 [Rachel, Rebecca, Susan, ?], a female 26-45 [wife-Susan?Brock?] and 1 female over 45[a mother or a mother-in-law?] as Jack Waddell theorizes. He is not in the 1820 Ohio census, and it appears that his son John is living as the head of household with siblings or hired workers and possibly his mother living with him: 1 male 16/26 [himself]; 1 male 10/16; 1 male 16/18; 1 female 10/16; 1 female 16/26; 1 female over 45; 4 in agr. He is in the 1830 census records again at age between 60-70, his wife is between 50-60. They have 2 sons living with them between 20-30 and 2 daughters aged 10-15, and 15-20. They are living next door to their son John, Jr. in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. John, Sr. is missing from the 1835 quad census suggesting that he had died or had moved by that time. Every child from George on was born in Ohio. Those previous to him were born in SC according to their census records. Several of the children were listed as members of the Greenville Creek Christian Church in Miami Co. or Darke Co., Ohio. They included George, John, Patsy (Daughter-in-Law), and Lucinda. (C-1958) It is not known with certainty that his wife's name was Susan Brock. John married Susana BROCK after 1788. Susana (daughter of Elias BROCK and Ann HOLLINGSWORTH) died after 1840 in of Newton, Miami County, Ohio, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

5. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Some data says that Rebecca Coats was married to Bayvill Hanson in 1818. I believe this is a misinterpretation of the spelling of his name. I say this because there is a Rebecca Coats, b. abt 1797 in SC, who married a Barzilla Harrison in Miami Co., OH in 1818. The dates and the names are a match. Plus if her husband was Barzilla, he is listed in the 1827 tax lists for Miami Co., OH living in Newberry Twp. Rebecca married Barzilla HARRISON on 10 Aug 1818 in , Miami, OH, USA. Barzilla died after 1827 in Of Newberry Twp., Miami, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
6. | ![]() ![]() Notes: In 1835, Susan and her husband, Peter Spillers are living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH near sons of John and Susan Coate and near possible sons of Stephen Marmaduke Coate. She could be a child of either family as far as I can tell. She and her family apparently later moved to Randolph County, Indiana and in the 1850's to Cooper Co., Missouri. Her birth and death dates come from her cemetery stone in Missouri. Susanna married Peter Julius SPILLERS on 13 May 1820 in Newberry Twp., Miami, OH, USA. He was born in Ohio according to the 1850 Montgomery County Census, but other second hand sources state that he was born in South Carolina. I do not know which is accurate. He probably is the Elias B. Coats who was in the 1827 Union Twp., Miami Co., OH tax lists. Elias married Esther "Hetty" HOOVER on 5 Jan 1832 in , Montgomery, OH, USA. Esther was born about 1814 in , , OH, USA; died after 1850 in Of Randolph Twp., Montgomery, Ohio. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

10. | ![]() ![]() Notes: George was married 4 times and was a (Christian Church) minister. He along with his brother John were founding members of the Greenville Creek Church of Christ established on Aug. 9, 1943. He is likely to be the George Coats who was living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH in the 1850 U.S. census. After he married Martha Martindale as his last wife, he and his family moved to Benton Co., Iowa. Sometime around 1859 they lived in Benton Co., Iowa and sold land in Miami Co., Ohio to John (Harstry). Samuel J. Coate was a witness to this deed. (C-2564) Martha and George had 4 more children, 2 of which lived to adulthood. One of these children, Ranalden Lycurgus Coats, went with Martha to southern California after George died. The other surviving child (also a boy) lived in the Chicago area. George's family bible is in the possession of Eddie Rodriguez, a step-grandson of George. 12. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Both Samuel and Mary were on a deed record for Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH in 1859. There are many other records that could apply to this family, but it appears that they are living in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH census records from 1830 to 1860. Samuel is likely the one buried in 1877 in Miami Co., Ohio. Mary is possibly the Mary Hoover who died in 1873 in Miami Co., Ohio. Richard Morgan has 2nd hand information that states her husband was Robert Ramage, b. in 1788 instead of Samuel Hoover. Mary married Samuel HOOVER on 24 Jul 1828 in , Miami, OH, USA. 15. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Elias in his Civil War enlistment papers stated "For 20 years immediately preceding my enlistment into the service of the United States on the 22 day of August, 1862, I resided in the following-named places: Vianna, Darke Co., Ohio." It should be noted that this was in south central Franklin Twp., Darke Co., Ohio right near where Silas Pearson lived and grew up. Silas Person married Susannah Coats, Elias' sister. In the 1840, 1840 and 1860 census records however, Elias is always found in the Miami Co. census records. Possibly he or his family lived mostly in Darke Co., Ohio but just happened to be working in Miami Co., Ohio during census years or summer months. The following information was provided to Steven Pearson in a letter from Richard Morgan of Cincinnati, Ohio."110th Regiment, Ohio Infantry Organized at Camp Piqua, Ohio, October 3, 1862. 17. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Bess Pearson, Steve Pearson's grandfather's second wife, believes that Susannah's middle name began with a B. Susan joined the same church as several of her Uncles and family, the Greenville Creek Church on Aug. 20, 1849 in Newberry Co., Miami Co., Ohio. This was when she was approximately 15 years of age and she is listed as the daughter of John in these records. There is a Nancy Coats that joins at the same time, though her parents or spouse are not listed to be able to place her correctly in the family. She could be an older sister of Susannah who would account for one of the unknown daughters of John from census records. Susannah and her husband Silas lived in Darke Co., Ohio and attended Sugar Grove Church which is no longer standing. Sugar Grove might have been in York Twp., Darke Co., Ohio as there is an area by that name in that township. They were not buried where they attended church. Susannah married Silas PEARSON on 8 Sep 1859 in , Darke, OH, USA. Silas was born on 11 Aug 1834 in , Miami, OH, USA; died on 1 Sep 1906 in , Darke, OH, USA; was buried in Shooks Chapel Cemetery, Wabash Twp., Darke, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
18. | ![]() ![]() Notes: He joined the Greenville Creek Church like many of his relatives had previously on May 15, 1853. He might be the William (T or J.) Coats who was living in Randolph Co., Indiana who signed an affadavit stating that he grew up with Silas Pearson in Silas's pension application. (Silas lived as a boy in Franklin Twp., (Darke Co., OH?) which would indicate that William did also. William Coats was 62 on this Mar. 30, 1899 affadavit. He enlisted in the Civil War on Oct. 29, 1861 in Company B, 71st Ohio Infantry and served for a period of 3 years. On Jan. 14, 1864, he re-enlisted until the close of the war. After the war, he became a minister of the Christian Church. He and his wife were married by his cousin, Rev. David S. Davenport. His funeral services were given by Olistus S. Cox at the White River Friends Church. His obituary states that his family (a wife, 2 sons and a daughter) morned his death as well as his friends of the G.A.R. 21. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Hijah, 18 years old, joined Capt. Gorsuch's Co. I, 94th Ohio Inf., August 5, 1862, enrolling for a period of 3 years. He mustered in at Camp Piqua, Ohio on Aug. 23, 1862. He was living at Franklin Twp. (Darke Co.), OH at the time. His Muster Roll says that Hijah died of disease at Murfreesboro TN., January 25, 1863. It describes him as 18 years old, 5' 5" light complexion, gray eyes and brown hair. It stated that his occupation was as a farmer and indicates he was born in Darke Co., OH. His parents were living in Miami Co., Ohio in 1850, so we're not sure if he was born in Darke or Miami Co. of Ohio. His mother, Martha is granted the 139.00 that came from Hijah's military service when her husband, John Coats died in 1864. |
