We know that Susan had a likely close relative, Nancy Hunter. Susanah was born in North Carolina according to 3 out of 4 census records. Nancy was born in NC according to most of her census records. Nancy married in 1815 to Asa Amos in Stokes Co., N.C. I currently have 3 triangulations with descendants of the father of Robert's parents and ancestors.

Nancy and Susanah were obviously close to each other as they both moved to Cabell Co., Virginia, and then to Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio together. They went to the same Baptist church and are both buried in a cemetery surrounding that church.

Susan is called Saruh in the 1870 Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Census. In that one, she is listed as being born in Virginia instead. She married in Cabell Co., Virginia in 1823 to William Clark. Cabell became a part of West Virginia in 1869.

I had compared the DNA of over 50 Hunter leads without finding a cousin match up till now. The Stokes Co., NC marriage record of her relative, Nancy, is what gave me the breakthrough.

I visited her gravesite in Oct. 1993 with my parents, daughter, cousin Grace Ann and my nieces. We could only tell it was her grave because it was next to her husband's. A rubbing verified it was her grave although it was unreadable to the naked eye due to moss. My daughter and nieces placed flowers on her and her husband's grave while the sun lowered in the sky. It was a very special memory as it could have been 75 years since a family member visited. The stone had a civil war medallion on it. I'm sure the church couldn't read the stone and didn't want to slight any soldier.

There are 9 cousin matches to Susannah currently from John Martin Hunter's sons. I have the most matches and the largest match with his son Robert. They are half or step matches according to Ancestry. This suggests that Susannah is the daughter of Robert and another woman, possibly one of his many slaves. We haven't found where Robert lived from most of the census records from 1790 onward. Other possible fathers for Susannah include Capt. John Madison Hunter's sons, John, Benjamin or William who at various points in time can be verified as living in Stokes Co., North Carolina where Susanah's relative, Nancy married in 1815.

Susanah did marry William D. Clark where my dna so far is saying he was the son of William Clark and Jane Ferguson. Their son James A. Clark had very kinky hair and tan skin from a Civil War tin type suggesting he had some African ancestry. James A. also had a long narrow pointed nose and gray eyes which probably enabled him to be in the census records as white.

William (son of William CLARK, * and Jane FERGUSON, *) was born on 20 Apr 1789 in Kentucky Or Virginia; died on 14 Jul 1881 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 17 Jul 1881 in Perry, Gallia, Ohio, USA. James A. Clark enlisted in the Civil War, Oct. 10, 1863 in E. Wiseman's Co., Rio Grande , Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was a private in the army, Co. M, 7th Regiment, O.V.C. (CL-99) He came down with tuberculosis while in the army and was discharged on July 10, 1863. This information was from the grave registrations of persons in the military in Ohio.

However, it disagrees with the enlistment and discharge dates his family gave in the 1890 census. According to them, he enlisted on Oct. 9, 1862 and was discharged on June 29, 1863 with paralysis of his right arm. His post office address was Rio Grande, Raccoon Twp. (CL-22, 363)

A third account in "Gallia Co. Ohio Soldier Discharge Book, Vol.1" by Trowbridge gives the following: James J. Clark, Sergeant, enrolled Oct. 10 1862; discharged July 3, 1865, Nashville, Tenn.; born in Gallia Co., Ohio, age 35 years; Height: 6'1"; Complexion: light; Hair: light; Eyes: gray; Occupation: farmer, Vol.1, pg.44. According to my grandmother, he was said to be of full English descent. However, his very tightly curled hair could explain the African heritage in DNA tests that come through this line. We now know that this heritage comes from Mali. If he is the ancestor who had African blood, he would have been about 25% African with his likely grandmother having been a slave.

He lived with his son, A.J. Clark and his family after breaking his hip, around 1899 or so. He was senile at the end of his life and tried setting his son's house on fire. (CL-104) He died at his son, Andrew James Clark's farm, 2 miles from Rio Grande, in 1902. He is listed as a Tanner by trade on his death record. (CL-19)

James's wife, Eliza Jane died in Dayton, Ohio at the home of Lola (Tobin) Clarks according to my great aunt Sophie. Aunt Sophie remembers her for the pretty aprons she wore. (CL-105) One of Jim and Eliza's son's, Henry-who went by the name of Joe, married a woman with some black ancestry. They never had children- but tried to adopt a daughter whom they dearly loved. To the great grief of Uncle Joe, this daughter was taken away from them before the adoption was final. (CL-105b)

Joe was the informant on his brother James A.'s death certificate. In this document he stated that their mutual father was born near Cora, Ohio. (CL-DOC) This information led to the discovery of James A. Clark's parentage above. The only fact that is not clear is where James A. was born. His parent's 1850 Ohio census record lists him as being born in Virginia. He lists his birth place differently in every document he is in: Gallia Co., Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

He is in the 1850 non-population census for Gallia Co., Ohio. He was living in Walnut Twp. next to a William H. Clark and near a Samuel Clark. The William (H.) was likely his father and the Samuel could have been one of his brother's middle names. In 1860, he and his likely father, William, lived in Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. William owned more livestock and property in both records than James and they lived near each other. In the 1870 non-population census, he and his likely brother George lived in Walnut Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio near each other. In the 1870 population census taken at a slightly different time, he is the following. They were all born in Ohio. His children could not read nor write. Many of the birth dates did not coincide with other firsthand records. In the 1880 U.S. Census, James Clark is 56, a farmer, born in Kentucky. His wife, Eliza J., age 50, was born in Ohio. Her father was born in Virginia and her mother in North Carolina. James Jr., age 20, was a farm laborer, 5 months unemployed while he attended school. Henry E., age 17, Ida E., age 15, Edward, age 12, and Rosa, age 9 also attended school. Jessie A., age 3 was still too young. Note that if the ages are correct, some of the birth dates I have for these children are slightly off. (CL-231) He and his son A. James were both known as A.J. in various published or family records. (CL-9) My family never knew what the A. stood for. My mother guessed that it was Andrew.

This is possibly the same Peter who was born in 1823/4 in Indiana according to census records. His parents were from Kentucky. This Peter D. married Mary Turner (b. 1825, Tenn). They had William and John. He remarried Lucinda Brooks from Tennessee and had Isaac, Lawrence, Riley, Peter J., Louis T., Reuben, Ulyssus T. Grant, Nancy Irene, Matilda, Josephine, Thomas M. Lucinda S. and Alice. Peter D. is in the 1850 Washington Twp., Clay Co., Missouri census. In 1860 he is in Polk Twp., Ray Co. Census. (CL-331)

There is also a Peter N. Clark who married Fanny S. Buster on 4/24/1840 in Gallia Co., Ohio. If this is our Peter, his birth date is not as stated either. According to World Family tree, he is the son of William B. Clark and Elizabeth Niday of Montgomery Co., VA and Walnut Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. William B. Clark was born in 1790 and died in 1849 in Gallia Co., Ohio.

He might possibly be the Peter Clarke who was one of the founding members of the Guyandotte Bridge Co. in 1848. This company built and completeted the suspension bridge over the Guyandotte River in 1852. If so, Peter was also named as one of the first trustees when the town of Guyandotte, Cabell Co., (WV) was incorporated in 1849. This is the same county that his possible father, William D. Clark married in. Guyandotte is located down the Guyandotte River from Gallipolis, Ohio and Gallia Co. where William D. raised his children.(CL-482)

There is a Nancy Clark who married Jonathan Buster on 3/27/1845 in Gallia Co., Ohio. Due to age and place it is likely that this belongs to her. She islisted by her maiden name in her father's will and possibly never even married. (CL-371)

This child's name was definitely America as listed in their 1850 census. Her first name is listed as Polly A. Duvall in her father's will. She is probably the Mollie A. Clark who married G.W. Deval in Gallipolis, Ohio on June 17, 1874. If this is true, the 1900 census record for a George Duvall living in Gallipolis, Gallia Co., OH on pg. 58B has a wife named Mary A. She was born Jan. 1843 and had a father who was born in Kentucky and a mother born in North Carolina. (CL-254)
