There is also a Thomas Thorpe, b. 1612 on Navenby, Lincolnshire, England to a William Thorpe and Margaret Walker according to a Public Member Tree with baptismal dates who would be the closest by age and place to Barton on Humber Thorpes that we are most likely to descend from. Assuming this Thomas was born in Lincolnshire where he lived as an adult, William is the name passed down in this family and is the most likely choice as far as theory building goes. Navenby is the closest place to Barton-on-Humber, Lincolnshire, England, so my theory is that our Thomas is the son of William.

    Notes:

Here is what we know about this Thomas from YDNA results at FTDNA. He is related to Solomon Tharp, b. 1750 of Delaware and other states and to a Zacheas Tharp, b.c. 1750, Botecourt Co., VA and a Jeremiah Tharp of unknown date. Solomon is not the Solomon of Woodbridge, NJ as they are absolutely not related via YDNA testing. The Woodbridge, NJ group is an entirely different YDNA grouping.

Here is who our Thomas is NOT related to via YDNA.

    1. Haplotype #1: Thomas Thorpe (1631) of Woodbridge, New Jersey; Zebulon Tharp (early 1700's) of Virginia; Benjamin Tharp (abt 1770) of Virginia, Thomas Thorp (1818) of Ontario, Canada; John Jacob Thorp/Tharp (1776) of Morris County, New Jersey.
    3. Haplotype #3: John Henry Tharp (abt 1830) of Somerset County, New Jersey.
    4. Haplotype #4: James Tharp (1799) of Virginia.
    5. Haplotype #5: George Thorpe (late 1700's) of England.
    6. Haplotype #6: William Thorpe (abt 1605) of New Haven, Connecticut.

Thomas was born in England or Virginia and supposedly lived in Virginia from 1660-1674. Descendants have theorized that he came as an indentured servant in one of the two following possibilities. It is believed that our Thomas came from Virginia before he moved to Maryland as per a Ship's passenger list dated 1683. He bought 200 acres of land in Maryland in 1684 known as Pentridge from Jacob Johnson of Langford Cay (Bay), Kent Co., MD. He paid for it with 4300 pounds of Tobacco indicating that he had land in1683/4 to be able to buy these 200 acres in 1684.

Here are the theories that he was an indentured servant instead. A Thomas arrived in a party in 1653/1654 where David Philips/Felps of Lancaster Co., VA claimed him and others as headrights. The other persons he claimed could have came from the same area in England. They were Jonathan Humphries, Elizabeth Collins, Thomas Smythson, and Mr. Jonathan Cox. He is the following Thomas. "Thomas Tharpe was born in 1633 in England to William Thorp and his wife, Margaret and was baptized on 28 Oct 1633 in St Michael's Parish, Bassinshaw, London, London, England.

He arrived in Virginia in 1654 and John Cox sponsored him in Lancaster, VA.

He married Alice (last name unknown) and they had 3 children---William (b 1662), Thomas (1664-May 1704), and Elizabeth(b 1601). Alice died after 6 Feb 1666/7 in Sittingbourne Parish, Rappahannock County, VA.

He and Henry (Hendrick) Lucas bought 105 acres for their families in Rappahannock Co, VA on 28 Feb 1662 and again on 20 Oct 1662.

After Alice died Henry gave (deeded) Alice half of the land that he and Thomas had purchased with the stipulation that the land go to her oldest son, William, when she died so that the land would remain with the family.

Thomas Thorpe was born before 1642. [1]"

Another Thomas Thorp came in 1658 instead and was claimed by John Evans of Westmoreland Co., Virginia. Evans claimed headrights on 33 passengers. They were himself, Jonathan Evans Jr., Mary Evans; (all of Westmoreland and then Essex Co., VA) Timothy, Edward and Charles Hill, Robert and Peter Lowe; Stephen, James and Richard Allen; Thomas and John Thorpe; Mary and Elizabeth Lord; Ann and Elizabeth Thompson; Abigail Parker; Barnaby Little; Rice Jones; Thomas Allstone; James Morrison; Leonard Strong; John Batt; John Moyses; John Clerk; Henry King; John Stoile; Edward Shoare; Sarah Voss; Tabitha Hare; Ann Dakin; and Edward Person. Again, if these persons are all from one region in England it could give us a lead back to our Thomas' ancestors. The headright system was for men, women and children at the time. That along with DNA saying we are related to the early Massachusetts group could help us narrow down where both groups are from. Candee Varvil suggests that this Thomas Tharp was from Westmorland, VA and probably ended up in Northumberland, VA and is not likely ours.

Right now, the only one unaccounted for is the Thomas who emigrated in 1664 to Virginia from immigration records.

It is important to note that the Virginia Company first started this headright system, where persons who could pay for the passage of "poor" persons to Virginia would not only receive at least 50 acers of land per person, but also had their indentured servitude for their agreed upon number of years.

The land our Thomas purchased in Kent Co., MD was close to if not on Quaker Neck. Although Thomas was not a Quaker, the Tharps often lived near Quakers and some of them married into Quaker families. A note of interest in Robert L. Tharp's book, is that Thomas is known not to be a Quaker because he started his will with "In the name of God, Amen," a manner never used by Quakers.

He died before Nov. 21, 1686 in that same county as his will was probated then. In his will he named: son, William, underage; daughter, Elizabeth, probably under age, neither with heirs, son Thomas Thorp, daughter, Mary Thorp. He dispossessed his "rebellious wife Elizabeth Tharp ... because she is gone away in another Country with James Carle and have carried a great parte of my goods along with her and lives in adultery with him." He made his friend, Robert Erick his executor and appointed guardian for his two underage children. He bequeathed him the land meant for William and Elizabeth if they had no heirs. (CL-316)

When looking on Freereg.org.uk, here are the baptismal dates of any of the Thomas Thorpes that were born in a range to be this Thomas. Obviously his parentage is difficult to discern.

Out of these, and the one born in 1640 in Hertfordshire from English baptismal records, all of them except one are accounted for by YDNA, or English records placing them in England when our Thomas was in Maryland.

The one that disappears from English records in 1661, is a match to our Thomas who could have first arrived in Virginia in 1664. This would explain why he had 4000+ lbs of Tobacco to buy his land in Kent Co., Maryland in 1683. His unknown wife never appears in burial records in England. He has a son Thomas who was born in Lincolnshire, England where he was from whose marriage and death never occur in Lincolnshire either. The fit makes a very strong theory.

Please note, that there is a John Thorpe whom is a witness for the will of Jacob Lowder in 1696 also in Kent, Maryland that seems like it could be his son.

Thomas married Elizabeth (NOT POWELL) on 21 Nov 1681 in , Kent, MD. Elizabeth was born before 1642 in of Lincolnshire, England; died about 1689 in , Talbot, MD. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

If he is the Thomas Thorpe of Barton on Humber, Lincolnshire, England, it would explain why he did not move with his father to Kent Co., Maryland in 1680. In colonial days according to Scholastic, children were treated as adults by age 14. Males in Virginia were able to own land and or be taxed at age 16.

I have 3 cousins on MyHeritage that descend from this Thomas whom triangulate between me and many other Tharp/Thorpe descendants.

    Notes:

This was an entry at the Archives of Maryland, from May, 1686.

"Robert Errickes Wife for Abuseing Elizabeth Thorpe."

Elizabeth's mother had left the family by 1685, and it appears that Elizabeth was under the improper care of Robert Errickes wife.

    Notes:

William was born abt. 1681/1682 because he is listed at age 65 in Aug. of 1747 in a deposition in Talbot County, Maryland.William's father died when he was young. His appointed guardian was Robert Erick. Robert was a Quaker and this indicates why William lived and moved among Quakers. (CL-334) He is not mentioned in the records of his guardian, Robert Erick, but by others selling the belongings of orphan, William Tharp. William signs a deed in 1697 in Kent Co., Maryland. This might be land provided by his parents. His parents had sold most of their land in Kent Co., Maryland, but had left some to their son William. He is in court records in the early 1700's, suggesting he had been abused as a servant. His sister, Elizabeth, also was abused in another record. It appears that William was an "indentured servant" for his upbringing due to the following court records in Maryland."Thomas Usher being presented by the Orphan Jury in June last for makeing sale of William Thorpe Orphan of Thomas

William William was a planter and cooper in Talbot Co., MD by about 1710. In 1716 he witnessed the will of John Keld, cooper of Talbot County. On Nov. 2, 1717 he purchased 50 acres of land, part of "Ashton" (Austin) from Dennis Larey. It was on a branch of Tuckahoe Creek. He is listed as a taxpayer of Tuckahoe Hundred with 4 taxables (himself, sons John, Thomas and Isaac over age 15) in 1733. William bought 50 acres, part of "Colerain", in 1735 from John Jordan, near Hillsboro in Queen Ann's County, MD which he willed to son Thomas in that year. He lived 13 more years after he wrote his will. On Feb 17, 1742, when the lands of John Keld were divided amongst his 3 sons, one of the witnesses was William's son, Abner Tharp. He was a witness to verify the birth of Esther Arey, d. of David and Elizabeth Arey on 40 years previous to a deposition on Aug. 18, 1747 and one year after David and Elizabeth were married. David and Elizabeth Arey were obviously long time acquaintances or probable relatives. (CL-316) David was a Quaker. William's will dated 1735, is transcribed and forwarded by an unknown researcher as follows. "In the Name of God Amen This 30th day of August in the year of our Lord Christ 1735, I William Thorpe of Talbot County being sick and weak of Body but of Perfect Mind and Memory Blessed be God and calling to mind the Mortality of my body and that is Appointed for all men once to Dye Do make my last will and Testament in manner and form following find and principally I give and bequeath my soul unto the hands of Almighty God hoping for salvation of the same thro' the Merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour and as for my Body I commit it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian and decent manner at the discretion of my Executor hereafter mentioned and as touching such Worldly Estate where with it pleases God to bless me with in life 1 give devise and Bequeath the same in manner and Form following Item[?] I leave and Bequeath to my well beloved Wife Jane Thorpe her Riding Horse Bridle and Saddle with the feather Bed and all the Furniture Belonging belonging there unto which I now lye upon and fifty acres of land Which I purchased of Denis Lary (1) during her life and after her decease to my son John Thorpe and his Heirs forever except one acre which I bequeath for a Burying Place not to be sold or Embossted [? ] moreover my will is that my Wife shall have the free use of and liberty of that Parcell of Land which I purchased of John Jordan (2) During her widowhood and afterwards to return it to my Son Thomas Thorpe and his Heirs forever and my will is that my wife shall have all of the Woolen and Linnen that I have now in my house that was bought for her life Item I leave and bequeath unto my son John Thorpe a feather bed Item I leave and bequeath to my son Isaac Thorpe a mare and colt which he has now in Possession with Bridle and Saddle and one feather bed Item I leave and bequeath to my Daughter Mary Thorpe a young mare colt going in Two years old Item I leave and bequeath to my son William Thorpe a walnut table Item my will is that my four youngest sons Abner, Joseph, Ogle, and William shall be free and at age at 20 years of age if it happens that my wife either marry or dye otherwise to stay with her till full age. Notes:

In 1754, John through unknown circumstances, obtained possession of the 50 acres in Talbot Co., MD that were willed to his brother Thomas. In 1755, John sold this same parcel to brother, Isaac. In 1757 Isaac sold it to Daniel Cox. John in listed as a planter in Kent Co., DE in 1751. He lived there through 1755 in Murderkill Hundred. He is next listed in the tax records for Mispillion Hundred, Kent Co., DE from 1756 through 1764. It is conjectured that he died shortly after, as he has not been found in any further records. (CL-322) According to Tharp's 1941 "Genealogy of the Tharp Family of Delaware", John by family tradition lived in Sussex Co., Delaware all his life in a town that is now called Franfurt, but even he acknowledged that there was a John who bought land in 1761 in Kent Co., Delaware that is where his son William a few years later started purchasing quantities of land in. He also stated in this short work considered the Tharp bible that it was tradition that he came from England, possibly even Sussex Co., England before coming to Delaware. More current Tharp researchers do not believe that John came directly from England, but that they came from there a few generations back.

The circumstances invoking this change are unknown as neither Thomas nor John lived in Talbot Co., Maryland in 1754 when the will was probated or after.
