Notes:

Edward III was crowned King of England on Sep. 21, 1327, the same year he invaded Scotland. His mother Isabella and her lover, Roger de Mortimer deposed his father, Edward II, from the crown. In 1330, he executed Mortimer who had murdered his father, imprisoned his mother and began his own personal reign. He won victory in Scotland at noted battles like Haildon Hill (1333) and planed for the union of Scotland and England. Through his mother, he claimed the French throne in 1337 which led to the Hundred years war with France. He with his 16 year old son Edward, the Black Prince, won the battle of Crecy in 1346. It was of the first battle of the Hundred Years' War. For much of his life he expanded his holdings to a greatly enlarged Gascony. However, he ended his part in the struggle in 1375 with most of his French possessions lost. He ended his reign with parliament siding with his son Edward. (WLD. Edward III was born at Windsor, the eldest son of Edward II and Isabella of France. Isabella and her lover Roger Mortimer, one of several disaffected Barons, had imprisoned and then killed the unpopular Edward II. They held power until the young Edward reached majority. Rather more effective than his father, Edward arrested his mother and Mortimer as soon as he took power, hanging the latter. He married Philippa of Holland in 1328.Edward was crowned in 1327, and the uneasy truce with Scotland was quickly ended, with the Scottish army invading. Although a further truce was concluded, when Robert the Bruce died in 1329, Edward involved himself in the politics of the succession. Edward supported Edward Balliol (c.1283 - 1364), who was a malleable if incompetent individual, and invaded laying siege to Berwick-upon-Tweed and heavily defeating the Scots at Hallidon Hill (1333). Edward was forced to support Balliol's precarious rule on two further occasions (1335, when he marched to Perth and 1336, when he burned Aberdeen), before tiring of what he saw as an unprofitable campaign and turning his attentions to France. He appointed himself King of France (his mother had been daughter of the French king) and invaded. He continued a series of popular campaigns in France for the remainder of his life.The young David II (1324 - 1371) had taken the opportunity to invade, but the Scottish army was defeated at Neville's Cross (1346) and David taken prisoner. It took 13 years and 100,000 marks for Edward to release him.Edward died at Richmond. He left England stronger, richer and more respected than it had been even in the times of his grand-father, Edward I (1239 - 1307)." His will is as follows: "We, Edward, by the grace of God, who hold the sceptres of the Kingdoms of England and France, according to the custom of our ancestors, Kings of England, we appoint our royal burial to be in the Church of St. Peter of Westminster. We bequeath, and to (found) masses for our soul, and the soul of Philippa, our dear consort, late Queen of England. We give to our future heir Richard, son of Edward Prince of Wales, our eldest son, an entire bed, marked with the arms of France and England, now in our palace at Westminster. To Johanna, late wife of the aforesaid Edward, our eldest son, one thousand marks. To our dear daughter Isabel, Countess of Bedford, for her support, and that of her daughter, three hundred marks per annum, arising from the lands of the son and heir of the Earl of Oxford, lately deceased, which Thomas Tirell, Knt. holds from us, so long as the said heir shall be under age. We appoint executors of this our will, our son John, King of Castile and Leon and Duke of Lancaster; John Bishop of Lincoln; Henry Bishop of Worcester; John Bishop of Hereford; and our dear and faithful knights William Lord Latimer; John Knyvet, Chancellor; Robert de Ashton, Treasurer; Roger de Beauchamp, Chamberlain; John de Ipres, Steward; and Nicholas de Carew, Keeper of the Privy Seal. John was the Duke of Lancaster, Earl of Derby, Lincoln and the Duke of Acquitaine. He was the 4th son of Edward III. He dominated power in the English government the latter part of his father's reign. His third wife was his long time mistress by whom he'd had four children previously named "Beauforts". The children received legitimate titles under King Richard II and became prominent in English history. John, through these children, is an ancestor of King Henry VIII. By marriage to his second wife, he was entitled to become King of Castile. Burke says he was the King of Castile and Leon. At any rate, in 1387 he gave up his claim to this title in favor of his daughter Catherine. His will is as follows: "I, John, son of the King of England, Duke of Lancaster, February 3d, 1397. My body to be buried in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, of London, near the principal altar, beside my most dear late wife Blanch, who is there interred. Lady Cecily had 13 children with her husband, Richard Plantagenet. She lived alone for the last 10 years of her life according to "Wikipedia" online. Her husband and 3 sons had died in the War of the Roses. She was known for her pride, temper and piety. She was called the "Rose of Raby" because she was born in Raby Castle. Parts of her will were forwarded as follows by my Uncle Richard Coate from the Tudor Place homepage.

Cecily Neville's final will - made on 31 May 1495 and proved on 27 Aug 1495 at Lambeth says: "...Also I give and bequeath to the kings noble grace all such money as is owing to me of the customs, and two cups of gold. Also I give and bequeath to the queen a cross crosslet of diamonds, a salter with clasps of silver and gilt enamelled, covered with green clothe of gold, and a pyx with the flesh of St Christopher. Also I bequeath to my lady the king's mother a portuos with clasps of gold covered with black cloth of gold. Also I give to my lord prince a bed of arras of the wheel of fortune and tester of the same, a counterpoint of arras and a tappet of arras with the Pope. Also I give to my lord Henry, duke of York three tappets of arras, one of them of the life of St John Baptist another of Mary Magdalene and the third of the passion of our Lord and Saint George..." Cecily gives gifts to Fotheringhay College, the college at Stoke Clare, the nunnery at Syon and her granddaughters (the children of Edward IV) as well as bequests to the de la Pole family (John de la Pole, 2nd Duke of Suffolk, having married her daughter Elizabeth): "...Also I give to my daughter of Suffolk the chair with the covering, all the cushions, horses and harness belonging to the same and all my palfreys. Also I give to my son of Suffolk a clothe of estate and 3 cushions of purple damask clothe of gold.Also I give to my son Humphrey two alter clothes of blue damask embroidered and a vestment of crimson satin for Jesus' masse. Also I give to my son William a traves of white sarcenet, two beds of down and two bolsters of the same. Also I give to my daughter Anne, prioress of Sion, a book of Bonaventure and Hilton in the same in English and a book of the Revelations of Saint Bridget..."

He had the title of "Protector of England". (C-330) His father died when he was quite young and he was taken under the care of the Countess of Westmoreland. The War of the Roses occurred a year after he was appointed by King Henry VI as Protector of the Kingdom. He was killed at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460.
