    Notes:

The mother of William the Conqueror is in discrepancy. It is either Herleve de Falaise, also spelled Harlette and Arlette. However, Usherwood states that she was Duke Robert's mistress, a tanner's daughter. His mother married a Norman nobleman after Robert's death. She helped her son's dukedom be saved by this marriage. William's birth date is also in question, listed as 1024 or 1027. What is not in question is the greatness of William the Conqueror. He had a bold spirit, orderly mind and tireless energy. He had European fame by the age of 38. He was Duke of Normandy and had inherited Normandy from his father at about age 8. Edward I, King of England, died without heirs and had told William that he would be his successor. On his deathbed in 1066, Edward named Harold his successor. This is when William decided to attack resulting in the famous Battle of Hastings and William's being crowned King of England on Christmas Day of 1066. (C-330) He married his cousin, Matilda, daughter of the Count of Flanders, to whom he was devoted. He died after a full life in Roen after months of internal bleeding from being thrown from his horse. The horse reared when burnt by embers in Mantes, a town he had just captured. (Usherwood, Reign by Reign)

William married Matilda (Or Maud) D.Of BALDWIN V in 1053. Matilda (daughter of Baldwin V, "The Pious" COUNT OF FLANDERS and Adele PRINCESS OF FRANCE) was born in 1031 in Flanders, , FRA; died in 1083 in Caen, , Basse-Normandie, France. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His birth date is also given as 1060. He was crowned King of England in 1087 and called King Rufus. He was ruthless and highly disliked. He was shot with an arrow while hunting by Sir Walter Tyrol. The Church refused to bury him, such was their animosity. There is a stone, called the Rufus Stone to mark the spot where he died and a ballad about Tyrol killing King Rufus. Some historians believe that it was a planned murder designed by his brother Henry and Tyrol to gain power and rid the country of a tyrant.

    Notes:

Henry's birth date is not certain. Piper's book gives his date as 1068. (C-330) Henry reigned from 1100-1135. His title was Beauclerc, King of England. He was William the Conqueror's youngest son. Before his father died he weighed out his legacy of 5,000 pounds of silver to make sure it was paid in full. He was a good man of business and a sound statesman, but was not without his flaws. Before his two wives, he had several illegitimate sons by Nesta of South Wales with the name of Fitz Henry. I have not found who the mother of Robert, the Consul was as Henry had at least 20 illegitimate children. (Usherwood, Reign by Reign)

Henry only had two legitimate offspring. He was greatly grieved when his only legitimate son, William, drowned at sea when his son was fighting for his father on "The White Ship" and it sunk in the channel. That left daughter, Mathilda his only is rightful heir. He had his nobles promise they would recognize her as Queen. It was her son Henry II, however, who would succeed to the throne after his uncle Stephen died in 1154.

Henry was buried in Reading Abbey which he had founded. (C-1372)

Henry married (Edith) Matilda QUEEN OF ENGLAND on 11 Nov 1100. (Edith) (daughter of Malcolm III "Canmore", King Of Scots and St. Margaret, The Atheling) was born in 1079; died on 1 May 1118. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Mathilda was also known as Maud. She was the widow of Henry IV, Emperor of Germany (d. 22 May, 1125) when she married Geoffrey Plantagenet. Her birth date is given as is in CD-100 and as 1104 in Harry's book (C-437 p. 567) and CD-102. It is given as 1103 in Piper's book. She is considered the first Queen of England. (C-330) She was known as Empress Maude during her marriage to Holy Roman Emperor Henry V. (C-2251g) In reality, the Title of Princess of England applies more easily as she was never really given the authority of Queen as her father had requested of his nobles.
