He is likely the Samuel who purchased land in 1767 in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. This is where his brother Adam also later bought land. I have a triangulation with a cousin that descends through this Samuel Calhoun.

William Calhoun, 1727-1804

William, son of Hugh and Agnes Calhoun was born in Ireland and was about 6 years of age in 1733 when the family immigrated to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

In about 1752, he married his cousin, Martha Calhoon and they started their married life in the well-known Calhoun area of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Later, they moved to a more outlying area of Lancaster County by the time their first child, George, was born on February 1, 1754. This area still was troubled by Indian attacks and George was kidnapped by the Indians when he was about 2 years old.

After this incident, William and Martha were devastated. They sold everything they owned and returned to Ireland, as they thought it was a safer place to raise a family.

When they arrived back in Ireland, they settled at Drumotolin in County Donegal, where they continued to live and have the rest of their eight known children.
Meanwhile, back in America, a small white boy of about 7 years old was discovered living with Indians by Judge Ralph Cotton. The child was determined to be George Calhoun and the Judge took him in and raised him and educated him as one of his own sons. George served in the Revolutionary War and was commissioned as a lieutenant. George later married Judge Cotton

William married Martha CALHOUN in 1752 in Cumberland, Pennsylvania, United States. Martha was born in 1732 in LANCASTER, Pennsylvania, United States; died on 27 Dec 1804 in Watsontown, Cumberland, Pennsylvania, United States; was buried in Delaware Run, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States of America. "Early Immigrants to Virginia" states that she was Mary Baker instead, d. of Caleb Baker and Catherine Hodwill. It is common belief that she is a Baker, but 3 Calhoun brothers witnessing a deed where her husband is selling land suggest otherwise. Women whenever possible had family representatives making sure her interests were considered. Persons descending from this Mary should check their DNA to see if it matches the Baker family or the Calhoun family to verify.

In an extensive DNA study, James is likely descended from the group of Calhouns that arrived in 1727 and 1733 and first settled in Virginia or Pennsylavania respectively. They were from a very wealthy family in Ireland and supposedly descend from Joseph of Aramethia in the bible. This family intermarried with cousins in most generations to keep the wealth in the family. Therefore, it is why we can find triangulations this far back in time. From autosomal DNA triangulations with my Mother, we know that James is descended from Robert, b. 1622, and his son William Campbell Calquhoun. We have triangulations with my Mother on persons who descend from Robert Calhoun, b. 1622 to his son William Campbell Calhoun. We also have triangulations from relatives James, Hugh and Andrew Calhoun who were sons of Rev. Alexander Colquhoun, b. 1662. Because James and Hugh's 's son James are accounted for, our best theory is that he is the son of Andrew. We therfore have 5 triangulations with descendants of Rev. Alexander Colquhoun the father of all three. On the Calhoun YDNA Surname Project with FTDNA, he is likely to be from the same group that includes William Calhoun who was listed of Wythe Co., Virginia and died there in 1791. He is theorized to be the son of Andrew Colquhoun, grandson of Rev. Alexander Colqhoun. Our autosomal DNA indicates we descend through Andrew's brother Hugh. We also know how we would be related to the Hugh, son of Hugh and Agnes test kit. We know he's related from YDNA. This time that kit would be one generation closer to us as we both descend through Hugh. James birthdate and place are usually given as 1729 in Orange Co., or Edgecombe Co., NC. Orange County wasn't formed in 1752 so that is not accurate. Edgecombe wasn't founded till 1741 so again, that is not possible. Onslow My exentsive land studies and DNA triangulaton studies suggests our James would have been born in Ireland or Virginia and is the descendant of William and Deliverance Peck Colquhoun. There is some dna evidence that he descends from William Colquhoun of Strabane. Son John is a likely candidate to be his father but we have no DNA evidence or specific historical documentation to back that up. John emigrated with 5 other (family) members in 1727 to Virginia. James also named his oldest son John. If he's the grandson of Alexander then he would have been born in Ireland as the first of his sons came over in 1733. James is first found paying tithes in 1748 in Lunenburg, Virginia suggesting he was born bef 1728. He is again in the records in 1749. In 1752, he is listed as James Caldhound. I can't find any other "Calhouns" there at the time. http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/lunenburg/census/sun006.txt In Jan. of 1755, James purchased 200 acres of the north side of Flatt Creek from William Forbush, Hugh Wiley, and James Gordon. It was Forbush's former residence. Wiley and Forbush had purchased the land in 1750. Witness were Jno. Jennings, Calliham and George Phillips. We know that this James was living in Lunenburg by 1748 when he paid tithes and 1749 when he was in another record. Hugh Wiley could be the same Hugh Wiley that shows up living near our James Calhoun married to Jean in Guilford Co., NC in a 1770's reconstructed tax record suggesting a connection between our James and this one. None is known other than the fact that his possible relative Adam of Lunenberg shares DNA with James Patrick's wife and Hugh who emigrated in 1733. (It should be noted that Wiley and Forbush both moved to Orange Co., NC (near where this James showed up in militia rolls for 1770 and 1772) and then again as neighbors to James in Guilford Co., NC. He then shows up again on June 9, 1763, when James Calhoun bought 200 acres from Benjamin Burchit in Lunenburg Co., Virginia for 10 pounds on the south side of the North Fork of the Meherrin River. They are both listed from Lunenburg Co., Virginia at the time. A Mr. Cock and a Mr. Scott are listed as witnesses. James and his wife Jane sell these 200 acres on Feb. 6, 1764, just a few months later to Everhard Downsing of Lunenburg. It was in the Cumberland Parish, of Lunenburg, Va and locate on the south side of the North Fork of the Meherrin River having been purchased by Benjamin Burchett in 1761. Both the wife of the original owner of the land, Eveling Burchett and Jane Calhoun reliquished their right of Dower to the land. Witnesses to this deed were John and Mary Scott Burchet and Benjamin Burchet (the original owner). Witnesses usually represent the wife's family meaning the Scotts might be representing Jane's family. It was recorded on Feb. 9, 1764. Therefore, here is what I know about the witnesses: This couple is the closet match I could find to John and Mary Scott. John Scott b. 1731 of Orange Co., Virginia was married to Mary Hacket b. 1731. He was a member of the Committee for Safety for Orange Co., Virginia and gained the title of Captain. He was born and died in Orange Co., VA. He married his wife Mary Hacket in Caroline Co., VA where she lived. He would have to have dealings in Lunenburg Co. to be a witness there. They did name their oldest daughter Jane. Mary did not have a sister named Jane according to a couple family trees I checked. I was hoping that Mary would be a sister of Jane since we don't know Jane's maiden name. On Mar. 2, 1764, they sold 200 acres of what appears to be his original property for 25 lbs. to John Rogers in Cumberland Parish bounded by James Calhoun and Hugh Wiley. It was a dividing line between James Calhoun and James Gordon, John Williams, and William Cross. This time the witnesses were Jno Jennings, William Wallace and John Forest. I can find no obvious connection to Jane from these witnesses. This one wasn't recorded until Dec. 13, 1764. The information in this above paragraphs was provided by Candee Varville. Note: This could be the same Hugh Wiley of Guilford living near our James Calhoun who died in 1795 in Guilford Co., NC records. James (paid 6 pounds) along with an Alexander Johnson (possible relative of his wife who payed 12 pounds) on the same page, is listed as paying tax demands of his excellency in May, 1770 in Rowan (Guilford), NC. Guilford was actually formed from Rowan in 1771. The persons on the list lived on the Little Alamance in Guilford Co., NC. James apparently joined in the uprising called "War of the Regulators" which were citizens against the corrupt leaders in the Piedmont area who were lining their pockets with gold so to speak and taking advantage of their leadership roles. He apparently was one of the men that lived in Guilford Co. at the time. The culminating moment of the "War of the Regulators," occurred on May 16, 1771, just a few miles inside the Orange County boundary from Guilford County. James is listed in a muster roll as a Private in 1772 meaning he was still part of the militia at that point in time. In 1779, he or his son James, William and John Calhoun were all privates in the Guilford Co., NC militia. In 1779 and 1783 he also received land grants in Guilford Co., NC. While in Guilford, James employed a lawyer named James Irvin to manage his estate. Our James has been given the incorrect name of James Irvin probably from a misinterpretation of this record. No first hand records for him or his son James of Guilford, NC EVER gives him a middle name or middle initial. In 1784 there is a William Calhoun (supposed orphan) who was born in 1766 and at age 18 was apprenticed to a blacksmith in Guilford Co., NC that might be a possible nephew or 1st cousin, once removed of our James Calhoun, probale son of William. He is listed as an orphan in Guilford records meaning that at least one of his parents had died by the time he was 18. In 1782, James' son, Samuel, buys land in Guilford indicating he is at least 21 at the time. In 1783, James' son James is likely the person buying land there having also turned at least 21 years of age. In 1785, he deeded land to son Samuel. Our James Calhoun is living in Guilford Co., NC in the 1790 census with 2 males over the age of 16 and 5 females. This fits he, his wife and youngest children easily. His youngest son would have been visiting one of his cousin's families most likely though as he's not listed in that record. It also means that 4 of his daughters were not likely married at the time. The other James Calhoun in the 1790 census that has 3 males over age 16 and 2 females living in his household instead is his son James. Guilford was formed out of Orange Co., NC. This second James was living within 2 houses of his son Robert Calhoun, 1 male under 16, 1 over 16 and 3 females. James Jr. received 300 acres of an original land grant in Oct. of 1783 in Guilford Co., NC. He had applied to receive a parcel of vacant land in July of 1779. It basically took over 4 years to be granted some. It was described as land on both sides of Troublesome Creek.This James has another male in his household in 1790 over age 16. I suggest this was his theorized brother Hugh who was born abt. 1767. Their father still had one son living at home in 1790 whom I believe to be John Johnston Calhoun who was over age 16. I suspect that is why his father gave him the home he was living in as he was caring for the farm and his mother already in 1795 when he was ill and passing from this life.Brother John never bought more land and sold at least some of it to his brother Samuel in 1797. Since he did not sell land to brother, James, it also indicates he was not the brother living with this James in the 1790 census.

He received a land grant in Guilford, NC in 1782 for 200 acres on Hogans Creek. He had applied for it in 1779. His father sold him 100 more acres of land in Guilford Co., NC in 1785.

He was the administrator to the estate of his father along with his brother James in 1795. It is not known when the estate was completed.

He received a bed and jug from his mother's will in 1805. He was asked to pay her funeral expenses in her will.

He sold lots of land after 1805 through 1828 in Guilford, NC.

He bought items from his brother James' estate in 1813.

This is probably his father by their ages. Robert Calhoun bought 100 acres of land from Andrew Mitchell on Dec 9, 1796. He sold 100 acres to John Smoot on Sept 2, 1811. In the 1850 census for Indiana, Elsey and her husband are living with their son Abel. She is age 84 at the time and the person who gave the info to the census taker believed she was born in North Carolina and her husband was born in Delaware.

He could easily not be the son of James and Jane. He is in neither of their wills. If he is their son, he would have died before the writing of their will.

The only census he appears to be in is as a son over age 16 in the 1790 census. This is true unless James and Jean had another unaccounted for son who died before 1795 and is not in their wills. There is a possibility of this as there is a male living with eldest son James in the 1790 census born before 1774 that could account for this John instead.

I am theorizing that he had a son John who was in the 1820 census for Guilford, NC. All of his sons are theories.

It is also a theory that his wife's name was Sarah and she is the one living as a widow in the 1820 census for Guilford Co., NC. His brother James was a married to a Sarah also, but the census records for James would not match the family completely for the Sarah Calhoun in the 1820 census. Two Sarah's married to 2 brothers accounts for most of the Calhon's in Guilford of the correct age to be James and Jean Calhoon's grandchildren.

He received land from his father in his 1795 will. This indicates he was at least 21 at the time. John sold at least some of this property to brother Samuel in 1797. John again was named in his mother's will in 1804 which was proved in 1805. These are all the records he has been found in. He is not in later census records nor does he buy other property.

There is NO PROOF that the James Calhoun of Putnam Co., Indiana was married to a Rebecca Parrish at all. They had him confused with the James married to Rebecca Parrish in Guilford in 1822. Typical trees for him had him also listed with two daughters that belonged to the James Calhoun whose daughters, Eliza and Martha were listed as underage in his 1838 estate administration in Guilford Co., NC. That James was married to Rebecca Parish. Underage children listed in his 1838 Estate Administration in Guilford, NC list daughters Eliza and Martha. There is NO proof that the James married to Nancy had daughters Eliza or Martha. Those two daughters and his wife when listed as Rebecca are INCORRECT. It would be easy to make these mistakes without seeing the admin for the James who died in 1838.

We know that this James married to a Nancy as per census records, had a d. Mary "Polly" who married a James Clark. They had a son J. Winfield Clark who is listed as being born in Guilford Co., NC on his death certificate. This suggests that James married to Nancy might also have been from Guilford Co., NC.

It is a complete theory that this James is the son of John Johnstone Calhoun by his age and likely place of birth.

Her bondsman for her marriage was James Campbell, because her father was deceased. In that case, most bondsman were relatives to the bride. If there was no brother who signed it instead of the father, then another relative would sign it. This suggests her mother might have been a Campbell.

She is NOT likely the sibling to Shadrack, James (brother of William) or William because they were bondsman for each other. Their father had passed by the time each married.

The only other Calhoun son of James and Jean that had possibly died before 1824 was John Johnston Calhoun of Guilford Co., NC.

James is living at home in the 1820 census. He married Rebecca Parish. His widow lived within a few houses of likely brother Shadrick in the 1840 census. Next to his widow lived a cousin, James Calhoun, who was slightly older than him. In the 1830 census, he lived next to his brother, Moses Calhoun, but was on the next pape of the census record making their connection unnoticed. Their father Samuel's record where he was between the age of 70 and 79 was a few homes above Moses' record. His likely mother-in-law and 2 siblings are living with them. Joseph Parish was the bondsman for Rebecca Parish when she and James married telling us that is her likely father or her brother if her father is deceased.

He is listed as the son of James Calhoun (Jr.) and his wife Sarah in most family trees even though he and his possible brother James were living 3 and 4 homes away from peer, Samuel Calhoun.

His bondsman for his marriage was Harmon Harris, the father of neither the bride or groom. It's usually the father of the bride that is the bondsman so this indicates her father was deceased.

He was deeded land by Samuel Calhoun in 1835 suggesting that he is the son of Samuel. However, Samuel's younger possible sons, Allen and then Enoch got deeded land 2 years after Moses, so maybe Moses is a nephew of Samuel instead.

He moved to Rockingham, NC during the 1840 census and then moved back to Guilford, NC. If he is the son of James Calhoon Jr. and Sarah, then his Uncle Samuel is the likely father of William C. and Obidiah C. Calhoun of Rockingham Co., NC as that fits with Uncle Samuel's census records.

The name was hard to decipher on the paper listing his/her birth. It could be Alec, Alen or Abed also. (CL-316) It is fairly certain however, from census records that this child is a female. There is an Alsy Thrp who marries a Henry Hartman on May 9, 1819 in Franklin Co., IN. (CL-317g, 425) We know from the birth listing in a NC University, that Alsy is the daughter of Joseph Tharp. It is conjecture that he is the Joseph married to Elsy who died in Indiana after 1830.

At Ancestry, my mother's descent to Mary Tharp is supported by a DNA Circle that relates 5 participants all back to this same Mary Tharp and inter-relates them to various members in the group. This is evidence that we descend genetically through this James Glenn. Mary is listed as Mary in the 1850 and 1860 census and Polly on her gravestone. As Polly was a nickname for many women's names including Mary, I am assuming that her original name was Mary. It was common for the Tharp line to name their daughters Mary and call them Polly. (CL-308) About the same time as our Mary, there were the following Tharps in Gallia Co., Ohio: 1820 Census: Abel (Raccoon Twp.) who married Polly Bruno on Sept 7, 1820; Zaus, Jane Tharp who married William Blagg on Sept 14, 1817, Jesse who married Nancy Stephens on Dec. 30, 1819, and John Tharp (Perry Twp.) who married Harriet Souls on Feb. 3, 1828. Zaus was born in 1804 in Gallia Co, Ohio. He married Mrs. Rachel Calfrey. They moved to Boone Co., Indiana and then Grundy Co., MO. He died there on Sep. 8, 1885. (CL-399) By 1830, the Gallia Co., Ohio census only lists a John Tharp in Spring...Twp. Joseph and his son Abel moved to Tippacanoe Co., IN in 1830. William Tharp is in Tippacone Co., IN by 1840. Zaus is in Boone Co., IN by then also. From the migration pattern through Gallia county, I believe they are likely to be father and brothers of our Mary Polly Tharp. Zaus (also known as Isaias after Joseph's brother?, Esaes or Isaac (after Joseph's brother?) named one of his daughters Mary Polly Tharp. (CL-425, 448)

This William Tharp is listed in the 1810 Gallia Co, OH tax lists. There is also a William Tharp who purchased land on 10/21/1816 in Dearborn Co., IN. (CL-441) By 1830, he could be the William who lived in Fairfield Twp., Tippacanoe Co., Indiana. He is of the correct age to be our William. According to the census record for 1830, there were 7 males and no females in his family at that time. By 1835, he appears to be married again. He and wife, Martha, of Tippacanoe Co. purchased land in Boone Co., IN. In the 1840 census, William's household consisted of 3 males and 2 females. (CL-425, 547) There is a possibility that this William died in 1844 or 1850. The 1844 date belongs to a will in Will Book 2, p. 300 and the 1850 is a will in Will Book 3, p. 38 in Iredell Co. for a William Tharp in the North Carolina State Archives that needs to be checked. Abel was in Gallia Co., OH in the 1820 census, Tippecanoe Co., IN in the 1830 census, Clinton Co., IN in the 1840 (CL-434) and 1850 census (CL-435), Fountain Co., Indiana in the 1860 census. He had lived in Ohio by 1817 because his son Isaac was born there between 1817 and 1818. He lives in all the right places to be the son of Joseph and Elcy Tharp of Boone Co., IN and his first two children are named after his mother, Elsey, and brother or grandfather, William Tharp. (CL-425) He is living adjacent to possible father Joseph, brother William and son or nephew, Isaac in the 1830 Tippacanoe Co., IN census and he is still living next to his likely father in the 1850 Clinton Co., IN census. (CL-436)

He appears to have been married three times, although the second marriage could be to an unknown son Abel. He is married to a Margaret in the 1860 Fountain Co., IN census. He is listed as Abel Thorp in his first marriage. (CL-425)

There was an Abel Tharp and John McCay who bought a storeroom built by John Schultz in 1853 and coverted it into a saloon in Pulaski Co. After that it was converted into Medarysville's first school house by 1857-58! This could easily be our Abel Tharp. (CL-437)

John is in the 1830 Gallia Co., Ohio census at between the age of 20 & 30 with a wife of the same age. He was having children in Indiana from the 1830's and the mid 1840's. He might be the John Tharp living somewhat near his parents in the 1840 Boone Co., IN census. He had one son at that time under age 5. In the 1840 Boone Co., IN census, he also had a daughter age 10-15, a son age 5-10, a daughter age 5-10, two sons under age 5 and another daughter under age 5 in this census. He and his family are living in Benton Co., IA in the 1860 Fed. Census. Here are their children's birth dates from the 1860 census. "James ? b. l831, Mary Ann b. 13 May 1832 in Gallia Co. OH, Eunice b. Feb 1833 OH, Martin V b.1838 IN, William b. 1839 IN, Harriet b. 1846 IN. In 1870 Federal census John and Harriet are living alone in Linn Co., IA. (CL-425)

John's exact birth date is in question. According to his death record, he died in in 1874 at the age of 78.3 years. This would give him a birth date of abt. 1796. According to the 1830 census though, he would have been born in 1800 at the earliest. Since that is an earlier record, I suspect it could be more accurate, but further census records need checked for his age to determine reliability. If he was born in 1796, it's more likely that he was born in North Carolina as very few settlers were living in Gallia Co., (then Washington Co.), Ohio in 1796.

John married Harriet SOULE on 3 Feb 1828 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Harriet was born about 1805 in , , NY, USA; died in 1872 in Vinton, Benton, IA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Zaus's name is spelled many different ways in the records: Isaias, Esaes, and Isaac. He lived in Gallia Co., OH in the 1820s, Tippacanoe Co, IN in 1830 as Issac, 1840 in Boone Co., IN as Z. Tharp. He took guardianship of a California Baxter in Nov. of 1840 in Boone Co., Indiana. He is listed as Esaes (Enos?) Tharp in the 1850 Howard Co., IN census. (CL-435) He moved to Grundy Co., MO by the 1860 census. He had purchased land in Spickardville, MO and lived with his son, Dennis by that time. He had nine children who lived and 2 more that died as babies. He was a farmer by trade. (CL-425, 434, 510E, 547)

Nancy Tharp was living and marrying in Gallia Co., Ohio about the same time as my ancestor Mary Polly Tharp. It is not known how they are related at this point, though I definitely suspect a relationship. Our current theory is that she is the daughter of a James Tharp that shows up in Indiana in the 1830s or is the sister to Mary and youngest daughter of Joseph and (Elcy) Tharp. If the second is true, then Nancy and her husband would be first cousins. (CL-489) It should be noted that the Tharps and Calhouns both came from Iredell Co., NC to Gallia Co., Ohio (CL-489)

It is not known with certainty that James is a son of Joseph and Elsy Tharp. He is in the 1820 census for Gallia Co, OH where this family lived for several years before moving to Indiana. Dana Norton conjectures that he may be the husband of Jane Tharpe found in Boone Co., IN from 1840-1860. She died in 1864 and listed the following children in her will: William Joseph, Sarah, Elcy, Elizabeth and Mahala. (CL-425, 432)

I have a cousin who is a DNA match to me who descends through this Elizabeth. She is listed as the daughter of James Jr. instead of this John in her tree. However, the daughter Elizabeth is already accounted for in James' tree. She would not be the likely daughter of Samuel because he was still living when her bondsman wasn't even a brother when she married James Crutchfield in 1824. A Mr. Harmon was her bondsman which indicates her father was deceased. That suggests she is the daughter of John Johnstone Calhoun instead who was deceased by 1824 and did have a daughter that age in the 1820 census for his wife, Sarah.
