Joseph and Lydia had a daughter named Mary in 1825 in Miami Co, Ohio. They are living next to his father in the 1827 and 1835 tax lists for Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. There is a Joseph Coats in the 1840 census for Warren Co., TN that needs to be checked to see if it might apply to this Joseph. He and his wife are living with William and Delilah Jones in the 1850 census and that census says he and his wife were born in North Carolina which does not match other records. (C-2242)

Joseph married Lydia DAVIS on 21 Nov 1822 in West Branch M.M., Miami, OH, USA. Lydia (daughter of Abiathar DAVIS and Lydia EMBREE) was born on 23 Feb 1798 in Wrightsborough Twp., Columbia, GA, USA; died in 1852; was buried in West Branch Quaker Burial Grounds, Union Twp., Miami, OH, USA. Notes:

One researcher on the net says that he died in 1880. He is the A.D. Coate that is in the 1880 census for Mercer County, Ohio. He went by David Coate/Coats in the 2 previous census records to that. His birthname though was supposedly Davis as a middle name taken from his mother's maiden name. He enlisted in the Civil War in Company D, Ohio 193rd Infantry Regiment on 11 Mar 1865. He mustered out on 04 Aug 1865 at Winchester, VA. He achieved the rank of Private and was born about 1829 according to his enlistement papers and his name is listed as Abiathar D. Coate.
