Notes:

This Mary is often stated to be the Mary who is the d. of William Jay and Elizabeth Natherson. I've seen dates where their daughter, Mary is born on Jan. 4, 1777 or Jan. 4, 1767. If the later is correct, then it's still possible that she's the one married to William Coate. William and Elizabeth Natherson Jay do have a daughter named Mary as she is in her father's will. (C-949, 1698) Mary is alive in 1807 when she witnessed the sale of her husband's land to James Brooks in Newberry District, South Carolina. She was also received on certificate from the Bush River Monthly Meeting by the Miami M.M. in 1808. She isn't in the 1820 census with her husband, but she is supposedly in deed records in 1820 and 1822 when they sell off their land in Miami Co., Ohio. This does need checked for her signature, since the 1822 date occurred in July and she supposedly died in Mar of 1822.

Elizabeth and her husband moved with her father William to Ohio in the Covington area. Heiss gives her birth date to be 1785. Don Coats estimates it at 1787. (C-1919)

Notes:

John was living in Covington, Ohio during the War of 1812 according to his obituary. He and his wife were born in South Carolina according to their 1850 census record. One grandson stated he was born in North Carolina and according to another he was born in South Carolina. Of course, this confusion could have been because the part of North Carolina he was born in later became South Carolina in 1788. After his childhood the obituary states that he went into "Teaming" as profession and drove from his parents home to Charleston, South Carolina. This supports him being raised by Big John, as Big John's sons, Wright and James were also into "Teaming".

He also has one of 2 supposed decendants that have been tested for their DNA who is related to 3 other possible Big John descendants via sons William and James. The list of John's children came from one of his grandsons, John R. Coats in a handwritten document in Winchester, VA. By Sep. 5, 1822, John and Sally are living in Randolph Co., Indiana when they sold their land in Miami Co., Ohio to Benjamin Lehman. (C-2568)

John is living in Randolph Co., Indiana in the 1850 census on pg. 63, White River Twp. He was age 63, b. South Carolina. His wife was age 60, b. South Carolina. Children still living with them included Lewis age 21, Andrew age 16 and Dempsey, age 6, all born in Indiana. Living next door to him is son, Joseph Coats, age 23, b. Indiana, married to Esther, age 27, b. Ohio with 2 daughters.
On page 79 of this same census, son William Coats is listed, age 33, b. Ohio married to a Mary (age unreadable). On page 62, son Thomas W. Coats, age 42, b. Ohio with wife Mary age 43 and children. Son Gabrael is on page 64 at age 26, b. Indiana.

There is a remarkable newspaper article on a family reunion of this couple and almost all of their descendants that was dated Jun 22, 1859 in Randolph Co., Indiana. John and Sally were at the head of the table and listed as ages 71 and 70 at the time. All of their present family was sitting in order of their age of birth around them and named in this article. There is also another lovely article on a family reunion that took place sometime in the 1880's after all but Mary "Polly" had passed from this original family. Mary was 74 at the time. There were 180 family members present. It stated that John was a farmer by night and a Justice of the Peace by day, a man of "iron constitution". He and Sally had raised 12 children and lost 2 others at a young age. They were pioneers in Randolph Co., Indiana and oft encountered wild beasts and Indians in their long lives.

John married Sarah "Sally" WRIGHT on 21 Oct 1807 in Miami, Ohio, USA. Sarah (daughter of Thomas WRIGHT and Elizabeth JAY) was born in in NC or SC; died after 1836 in Winchester, Randolph, Indiana, USA; was buried in Randolph County, Indiana, United States of America. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

They settled in Darke Co., Ohio after their marriage. In 1834, they moved out of that section of Ohio and then moved 3 years after that to Pleasant Mound Twp., Bond Co., Illinois.

Sometime after moving to Illinois, many of the children were dissatisfied with the conditions there and joined a cattle drive moving as far away as Wisconsin.

They all returned to their father's property in 1847 where their offspring were still living at the turn of the century. In the 1850 census for Bond, IL the 3 sons they still had living with them ages 24-17 were all born in Ohio. In the 1870 census, she is living with her son, Aaron. Her husband is likely deceased.

Joseph's place of birth is still in question. It's listed as NC in the 1850 census for Harison Twp., Hoaward Co., IN, or as Newberry or Charleston, SC depending upon the 2nd hand source. Joseph and father appear to be living next to each other in the 1820 census for Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. He and brother Williams were administrators for their father's estate. He and his brother, William moved to Marion Co., Indiana sometime in 1822. His sister, Hettie, was married in Marion Co., Indiana in Mar. of 1823 so she obviously moved with them also. He purchased 80 acres of land in Township 17, North range 4 East, Section 18, W1/2 SE 1/4. He is also listed with a purchase of 80 acres in Brookville District, Marion Co., IN on Aug. 7, 1823. Perhaps this is the same property and that it's just a different stage in the purchase process. He is apparently listed in the 1830 census for Marion Co., Indiana. In 1840, he is in the Hamilton Co., IN census records. Joseph is next listed "of Howard Co., IN" when he purchases 80 acres of land in the same county on Mar. 20, 1849. In the 1850 census for Howard Co., Indiana, Joseph is listed at age 58 and born in North Carolina. Joseph died while working in his fields according to his daughter, Hettie's obituary. Some say this was in Howard or Tipton Co., IN. According to several genealogies at ancestry.com, he died in Kansas instead. He is possibly buried in the Friends Cemetery in New London, Howard Co., IN or in East Union Cemetery in Hamilton Co., IN. The East Union Cemetery is just over the border from Tipton Co., IN where his wife is buried. I could not however, find his burial record in East Union Cemetery transcriptions. (C-1693)

Williard Heiss says he was born in 1786 instead. Mary Helen Pemberton gives his birth date as 1796. He aparently moved with his brother Joseph to Miami Co., OH and then Marion Co., Indiana where he bought 80 acres of land in Brookville District on 1/6/1824. This is probably the same land whose purchase he began on Nov. 16, 1822, in Township 17, North Range 4, East - Washington, E 1/2 SW 1/4 Section 29 for 80 acres. This was about five weeks before his brother Joseph also purchased land. He or his brother are not listed of Miami Co., OH when they made the purchase suggesting they had moved with their families to Marion Co., IN and then found land to purchase. I am assuming that he is the same William Coats of correct age and birthplace for he and his wife living in Harrison, Howard Co., Indiana, USA in the 1850 census. If so, they would likely have had children between their marriage of 1817 and 1827 when son John was born.

Mary was their 10th child according to Richard Morgan and she was born on July 10, 1806. I have, however, found this birth date also listed for the Mary who was the supposed twin sister of Mark Coate, son of James Coate and Mary West. (C-2081) Plus in an Ancestry World Tree submission by Don Coats, they give her birth date as 1798 instead and her marriage date as 1817 in Miami Co., Ohio. The marriage date of 1817 did take place in Miami Co., Ohio If she was born in 1806, she would have only been age 11. I therefore, assume that the 1798 birth date is more likely to be correct.

If Charlotte had a daughter named Esther, she is highly likely to be alive in 1880, living with her son-in-law Riley Deihl and his wife, Esther in White River, Randolph Co., IN. She is listed as Charlotta Hiatt. The only disparaging fact is that her parents are listed as being born in Indiana. This could easily be because the information was given by a grandchild or greatgrandchild who simply didn't know. Everything else is a good match and I believe that this is Charlotte Coats.

Charlotte, her husband, theirs sons and daughters with spouses and children totalled 26 at the 1859 reunion in Randolph Co., IN. Two were absent and three were deceased at the time.
