    Notes:

    When George marries Hannah in 1734, his father, Abraham is listed as "late of Cecil County in Maryland but now (living) on the North side of Overton in the Colony of Virginia." His parents and the following siblings attended his wedding. Mary, Lydia, and Isaac Hollingsworth, plus probable spouses named Lydia, Mary and Mary Hollingsworth. Other close relatives in the right hand column were Isaac and Mary Parkins, Esther Harrison, Elizabeth Rerpo?, and Josiah Calvert. No Mccoys were amongst the guest list. George Hollingsworth was appointed Overseer of the road from Littlers to Hollingsworth's Mill in the Orange Co., VA Road Orders, Aug. 26, 1742. A George was listed in the Rent Rolls for Frederick Co., VA in 1759 and 1764 that is likely to be him. George was granted 350 acres of land in Craven Co., NC on a branch of Little River called Mudlick Creek on Feb. 3, 1767. He and his wife, "Jean", sold 155 acres of it to John Williams on July 1772. Witnesses were Joseph Hollingsworth, Quaker, George and James Hollingsworth (his sons). It also states that George gave some of his original land grant to son Joseph. Joseph gave it to David Hollingsworth. David sold it to James Burnside on Sept. 15, 1813-Jan. 1814. (C-2279)

    In Medlin's book on Quakers of SC and Georgia, he lists two different George Hollingsworths. He attributes the following children to George II of the 96th District: Isaac b. 1748, d. 1809, James Sr. d. 1822 m. Sarah Wright, George, and Nathan. My other sources of information believe that these two Georges are one and the same and all the children are combined together. (C-265) None of George and Jane Hollingsworth's children appear in South Carolina death records. (C-820)

    Joseph moved to SC with two young sons, as a widower, sometime before June of 1768. He and his brother Isaac are in the 1779 Bush River Monthly Meeting minutes. He might be the Joseph Hollingsworth in Hinshaw's Quaker encyclopedia that got a certificate to Cane Creek MM on 7/6/1784 from Wrightsborough Monthly Meeting in South Carolina. (C-95, 1991)

    "He is listed as the son of George Hollingsworth and Jane Elwell with a birth date of 1739 according to Lewis Wright and Eli Jay. (C-610, 1546) He moved from Virginia to South Carolina in 1767. (C-265) He apparently purchased 100 acres in Craven Co. on the waters of the Little River shortly before marrying on Sept. 29, 1772. His land was bounded by Abraham Hollingsworth. (C-947) According to Eli Jay, he was the leader of the Quaker movement to Ohio in 1804. (C-1546) In any case, he and his family got a certificate to move to Miami MM, Oh on Aug. 8, 1805. (C-106) They had sold their land of 100 plus acres in Newberry Co., SC to Samuel Cothran on July 12 of that same year. (C-897)

    Isaac was in the 1790 census records living fairly near (Big?) John Coats in the 96th District of Newberry Co., South Carolina. He was the male listed at over age 16. He had 3 males under 16 and 5 females in his household in that year. His father-in-law had been living with him until his death just about the time of the enumeration. He was a farmer by trade. He used to say that his crops never grew better than when his wife, Susie, was away preaching. Susannah often traveled with her sister, Charity Wright Cook who also was a well known Quaker minister. He seems to have supported her ministry well. He also "possessed great physical strength and unbounded courage. During the Revolution when a British officer approached his corn crib he was forbidden entrance. The officer drew his sword and threatened. Big Isaac went to him, took the sword from him, saying: 'Thus far shalt thou go, but no farther.' The Officer succumbed." (C-109, 457, p. 63) His kindly heart was pointed out in "The Annals of Newberry" when an Irishman asked him for work, just as he was going to meeting. He had the man move a pile of stones for him. When he returned, the stones had been moved and he requested him to move them back. He paid him for this service.

    He was a man who knew his mind. When moving to Ohio, he was asked by a passerby where he was moving. He answered, "I am not moving. I am sitting still." The man responded, " Well, where are you bound then?" He replied, "I am not bound at all. I am a free man." One of his daughters reprimanded him later for his discourteous answers and he told her, he did think it was any of the man's business. He was also known for disliking the young males' style of exposing their suspenders without jacket. When he came across a youth dressed this way, he would lift the suspender pulling the button off. Many a youth avoided him because of this. When they settled in Miami Co., Ohio and built their "rude cabins" he described it sitting in a "dark, mephitic tangled woods." He only lived in these woods, that he helped clear for three years before his death. (C-930)

    Notes:

    James and children, Charity, Sarah and George, by his unknown first wife transferred to Bush River before 1786. He is in the 1790 census with these children, his second wife and two more children he had had with Sarah Wright. A James & family moved to Miami MM, OH and got a certificate from Bush River MM, SC on Aug. 8, 1805. He is listed in the 1810 and 1816 tax records for Miami Co., Ohio. According to Hinshaw, this would be the James that moved with his brother's Isaac, George and Nathan who moved to Ohio with descendants going to Indiana and Iowa. I had information that he was the James who died in SC in 1821, but this is probably confused with another James. (C-96, 457, p.92, 1025, 2034)

    This Henry is likely the Henry Hollingsworth in Duplin Co., NC records for 1783 and in Sampson Co., NC in 1784. In the 1820 census for Adams Twp., Darke Co., Ohio, Henry lists himself as over 45. There is a female under age 10, one from 10-16, one from 16-18, and one from 26-45. He was engaged in agriculture. (C-130) Henry and Sarah deeded 150 acres to Isaac, his probable son in Darke Co., Ohio on Aug. 24, 1823. (C-125) His estate was probated the next year in 1824 in Darke Co., Ohio, Ib2, p. 43, fbh.
