  1. 1.  John SHORTJohn SHORT died about 27 May 1638 in Walberton, Sussex, ENG; was buried on 28 May 1638 in Walberton, Sussex, ENG.

    Notes:

This Short line is likely to go back to a William Short who left a will in 1538 in Walberton, Sussex, ENG. The will is currently be translated by a professional researcher (7/98) as it's in old English. (C-1576) It is possible that this John was married once before he married Joan. This is because of an unexplained baptism of a Thomas Short, son of John Short on Oct. 26, 1606. (C-1592) This could also indicate that his first and seconds sons, John and Thomas had a different mother than Joan Beeding.

A partial transcription of the will of John Short is as follows: "May 27 1638, 14th year of reign of Lord King Charles, John Short the elder, husbandman, of the parish of Walberton, County of Sussex, I give and bequeath to my eldest son John Short five pounds of lawful money of England to be paid him within a year after my death. Item. Give and bequeath to two grandchildren John and Harry the sons of the said John Short... Item, I give and bequeath to my second son Thomas Short the sum of Twenty pounds of god and lawfull monoy of England to be payd him within halfe a year after my decease Item, to Agnes my daughter in law the wife of the sayd Thomas forty shillings to be paid his wife a half a year after my decease Item I give and bequeath to the Sayd Agnes (ealfo) a dozen (po ) to be delivered her within a month after my decease ...Item, I give and bequeath to my godchildren (......................) payd Thomas (Renit) (if) demanded) Item, I give and bequeth five shillings of lawfull Inglish monoy to the poor of Walberton to be payd them the day of my buryall; Item, I give & bequeath to the (parrish Church) of Walberton (....... ........) to be payd the (....... .... .... ..... .. ... after my death) Item; I give and bequeath to my wife Joane Short and my son Henry Short all the residu... (Joane and Henry are executors.)

John married Joan BEEDING on 24 Jan 1613 in Walberton, Sussex, ENG. Joan died about 5 Jan 1646 in Walberton, Sussex, ENG; was buried on 6 Jan 1646 in Walberton, Sussex, ENG. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 2.  Henry (Henrie) SHORT, Sr.Henry (Henrie) SHORT, Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) was born about Sep 1614 in Walberton, Sussex, ENG; was christened on 2 Oct 1614 in Walberton, Sussex, ENG; died after 16 Dec 1675 in Walberton, Sussex, ENG.

    Notes:

Henry's second marriage is conjecture from the will believed to be this Henry's. There is a possibility that the will below belongs to his nephew, Harry, son of brother John, instead. I have checked all the marriage, will and burial records/indexes sent to me by Lauren Vargo, and have found no second mention of a Harry or second Henry Short. Therefore, our clearest belief is that the following will belongs to this Henry. If so, he only bequeathed items to the likely children of his second marriage. The sons of his first marriage would have been old enough to be off on their own and probably provided for already. Henry Sr.'s will is as follows: In the name of God Amen, the Sixteenth day of December Anno (Dui) 1675 I Henry Short sy ( ) of Walborton in the County of Sussex Vistua(l ) being Sick in body butt of perfect memory praised be to God do ordain & make this my last will & testament in manner & form following first I bequath my Soul to almighty God my Creator believing and hopeing to be (saved) by the (merrilly) & (mercy) of my Redeemer Christ Jesus And as for my (comporat?) Notes:

This Short is listed as Adam Short in a history of Delaware (Co., PA). However, Lauren Varga has hired a genealogist to search primary documents in England. She has found the three children of Miriam Ingram to be with husband Henry Short (not Adam Short) as herein listed via written baptismal records in Ford, Sussex, ENG. (C-1576, 1583, 1584, 1585)

If Henry's baptism occurred when he was a baby, he was married at a very young age of fifteen or so. The baptism record states that Henry, son of Henry by his wife Elizabeth was baptized May 9, 1647, and it seems to fit this Henry well except it makes him younger than we would have expected. (C-1592)

Henry married Miriam INGRAM about 1662. Miriam (daughter of Abell INGRAM and Miriam CHATFIELD) was born in 1645 in Catton, Sussex, England; was christened on 9 May 1641; died about 1682 in at sea. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

I have conjectured that this John is the husband of Anne Alwine. He is the only John I know of in that vincinity the right age to match a marriage record to Anne, unless it's a second marriage for his father. (C-1591)

Family/Spouse: Anne ALWINE. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Ann and Joel Bayley were listed in the closest kin's column when they attended the marriage of her sister, Miriam Short White to Aaron Coppock in 1704. (E)

Ann married Joel (Bayly) BAILY on 11 Feb 1687 in Chichester, Chester, PA, USA. Joel was born in in Of Wiltshire, England; died in 1732 in West Marlborough, Chester, PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Miriam SHORTMiriam SHORT Descendancy chart to this point (6.Henry3, 2.Henry2, 1.John1) was born about Apr 1664 in Ford, Sussex, ENG; was christened on 10 May 1664 in Ford, Sussex, ENG; died on 19 Dec 1748 in , New Castle, DE, USA.

    Notes:

She was a passenger on the ship "Welcome" that came to Pennsylvania from Aug.-Oct. 1682. Her mother and uncle, Isaac, both died on board in the smallpox epidemic. She and her siblings came under the care of her mother's bother, G. Ingram. (C-253b, 1427) She was married shortly thereafter to George Thompson by a Swedish priest. George as well as the clergyman who performed the ceremony were taken to court for violating the laws of the Province (possibly because she was with child?). Thompson appeared in court on Feb. 14, 1682/3 and the charges were dismissed as no one came to accuse him. It appears that Thompson left Miriam, as she was in the town records on Nov. 6, 1684 as needing public assistance for herself and child (Ralph Thomson). In some sources it assumes he dies before she marries again. However, this George Thompson seems to be the same Thompson that was listed as a married man in church records in 1698. There is a descendant of a Joshua Thompson, b. 1696 in this area named Lew Chaplick that believes that Joshua is a son or grandson of George Thompson, possibly through Miriam Short. She next married William White of New Castle Co. He was a Wheelwright. He died in 1703 and left her widowed with three additional children.

Her last husband was Aaron Coppock. (C-1210) They had declared their intention to marry on 7/11 and 9/13/1704 in Concord MM. She probably is the Miriam Coppock who witnessed the marriages of John, her son, and Margaret Coulson Coppock in 1731; John Harris and Phebe Beeson, 1731, and William White, her grandson, and Sarah Pugh in 1743 in East and West Nottingham Monthly Meetings held in Cecil Co., Maryland, just over the border from Townships of this same name in Pennsylvania. (C-1302)

A supposed source by Cope entitled "Baily Family", states that this Short family's origin was in Garton, Surrey, (ENG). (C-1427)

Miriam married Aaron COPPOCK in 30th da 9th mo 1704 in Chichester M.M., Chester, PA. Notes:

Adam was one of the last surviving immigrants who came on the "Welcome" in 1682. In 1693 he sued Tomas Wynne, who died during the process. He had a survey of his land near Christiana Creek made on Oct. 31, 1719. He was called to testify on behalf of Lord Baltimore when the Maryland boundaries were being decided in court. At an estimated date of 1731, Adam stated that his age was 78 at the time and recalled questions pertaining to 1682, 1684 and 1685. He supposedly lived for 49 years in New Castle Co., (Del or MD) If his birthday of 1666 is correct, then the amount of time he had lived in Delaware or his birth date is incorrect in his account to Lord Baltimore as these figures give us his estimated birth date at 1653. (C-1210, 1428)

Adam married Martha UNKNOWN about 1712. Martha died in 1751 in , New Castle, DE, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
