    Notes:

    Thomas Coate received a land grant personally signed by President Martin Van Buren in Mercer Co., Ohio on Oct. 10, 1840. A photo copy is in my files. Thomas's Coate's son, James Coate changed the spelling of his branch of the family to Coats. That was to comply with a mistake in the military in the Civil War, which he repeated to obtain his pension from them. He was in an Indiana infantry. (C-2004, 2005)

    Joseph and Lydia had a daughter named Mary in 1825 in Miami Co, Ohio. They are living next to his father in the 1827 and 1835 tax lists for Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. There is a Joseph Coats in the 1840 census for Warren Co., TN that needs to be checked to see if it might apply to this Joseph. He and his wife are living with William and Delilah Jones in the 1850 census and that census says he and his wife were born in North Carolina which does not match other records. (C-2242)

    I believe that Moses Marmaduke Coate had a daughter named Rachel who wrote to Amanda Pemberton Krell in 1901 from Oregon. I have not found evidence of Rachel being his daughter other than the fact that she lists her father who passed away on Feb. 24, 1901 at age 85, 2 mo, and 14 days and lists relationships to herself that often but not always fit if she is the child of Moses Marmaduke Coate.

    Notes:

    One researcher on the net says that he died in 1880. He is the A.D. Coate that is in the 1880 census for Mercer County, Ohio. He went by David Coate/Coats in the 2 previous census records to that. His birthname though was supposedly Davis as a middle name taken from his mother's maiden name. He enlisted in the Civil War in Company D, Ohio 193rd Infantry Regiment on 11 Mar 1865. He mustered out on 04 Aug 1865 at Winchester, VA. He achieved the rank of Private and was born about 1829 according to his enlistement papers and his name is listed as Abiathar D. Coate. Source: Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio.

    Notes:

    Rachel is not listed as a child of Moses Marmaduke Coate in the census or family records I've found, but I'm including her here as this is where her letter below most fits into a family related to Marmaduke and Mary Jane Coppock Coate.

    This is a copy of a 1901 letter written by Rachel Coate that was typed and submitted to Amanda Pemberton Krell to help prove a families lineage back to Marmaduke and Mary Copock Coate. It is an example of a version of the family tradition passed down about Mary Jane Coppock and Marmaduke Coate. It has many inaccuracies. "Yours received in due time but we saw in the Messenger that your father had gone. Was sorry, my father passed away over the 24th of February age 85, 2 mo, 14days.

    I have lived to see my Aunt (Handwritten: she lives here in Oregon) she is nearly three years older than father, she will be 89 the 9th of August. She is strong for her age, and has a good memory. She tells us things that father and mother used to tell us when we were little, about the Indians capturing James Coppock family and two sisters. There were two sisters they did not get. James he kept out of there reach and escaped to a white settlement. The sisters names were Mary and Martha. The Martha was the baby and only six weeks old and Mary was about six years old. She was sitting in the bed of a cradle rocking the baby, when the Indians came in and killed the mother and took the girls. They kept them and raised them. Now this was the Mary that married the Coate, his name was Marmaduke Coate. He bought this girl from the Indians when she was 22 years old, he traded them a fine horse and new bridle and saddle for her. Then they had to run for there lives. He was afraid they would kill him and take the girl again. It took five days to reach his home. He built fires at night to deceive them, then they would go 2 or 3 miles away and cover themselves with leaves and bushes to sleep until morning. But little Martha she married an Indian. The Mary and the Che (Cheyenne?) Coates came across her among a tribe of Indians and her sister knew her. They persuaded her to go home with them then, but she wouldn't stay. She went back to her Indian husband. Now this Mary was my great great Grandmother that married the Marmaduke Coate, they had eleven children. My grandfathers name was Moses Coate, Who also married a Coppock. The first Moses Coate had a brother by the name of John and this was my great great grandfather. He was born about 1715. My aunt tells me they all came from England and settled in S. Carolina. Then they all came to Ohio about 1806. The Marmaduke Coate and his wife Mary lived to be old, she lived to be 93 years old and he lived to be 96. Now the Ancestors on, as they came down on my Grandmothers side, First John, 2nd Joseph, Calvin, James, Elizabeth Coppock. Now Elizabeth was My Great Great Grandmother. And now on the Coate side, first Marmaduke who married Mary Coppock sister of James Coppock. The Moses my great grandfather and the Moses my Father. I have papers, leases, of everything back to sixteenth century. Rachel"
