Notes:

In the administration for Henry's estate on Jan 29, 1818, the children of his daughter Molly were listed as Sarah, Edney, Jehu & John Coate. Since Henry's children Mary, Elizabeth, Marshall and Henry Jr. weren't mentioned, it is entirely possible as suggested by Michael Tucker that Molly Pitts died early on and Henry had his other children by a second wife named Hannah in a courtcase over the settlement of Henry's estate. Notes:

Although occasionally Molly is called Mary, her much younger sister was named Mary. (C-1600) Some records state that she and Henry declared their intentions to marry on the 12 m, 12d, 1754 in Kingwood MM, NJ. However, that intention does not list his spouses name to be. When Henry and Molly Pitts children's ages are studied, they do not have children till about 1785... making them a full generation younger than the Henry who wished to marry an unknown person in Kingwood, NJ in 1754. Mary joined the Bush River Baptist Church a month after her husband. "July 11.1801 show 7 persons received by experience Mary Coat, Sarah Conner, Aaron Pitts, Rebekah Johnston, John Johnston, Sarah Williams and James Cole."

Mary married Henry COAT before 1784. Henry (son of Little John COATE) was born before 1768 in NJ, Nc Or Sc; died on 17 Jan 1817 in , Newberry, SC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

I suspect that Sarah had 4 children by the time her grandfather died in 1818 that are listed in a court case involving the settlement of Henry Pitts estate.

Nancy Coats' father believed this Henry Jr. to be the son of Henry and Molly Pitts. He would be the son that would account for 1 son under age 16 in Henry's 1790 census record. He is in the following Davenport record for Newberry Co., South Carolina. "28Jul1803 - Probate Estate of Francis Davenport, Sr., late of Newberry County, Decd. Buyers at Public Sale Mary Davenport, James Davenport, William Davenport, Isaac Davenport, Stephen Waldrop, John Brooks, Henry Coate, Jr., Aaron Inman, John Fletcher, Samuel Beeks, Thomas Gary, Stephen Herndon, Rebecca Turner, Elisha Brooks, George Goggans, Thomas Gilbert, David Turner, and Ezekiel Waldrop. (Newberry County, SC, Estates, Box 5, Pkg. 13)"

Notes:

John's birth date is estimated at aft 1796 from his father's will in which he is listed as a minor. He is still listed as under age 21 in an 1818 Equity court record. Only one of his brothers wasn't listed as a minor in the 1817 administration and that was Jehu, who has a birth date of 1802. (C-1600) He might be the John Jr. listed in the census records as living in Newberry, SC in 1820 and 1830. I do not personally know if he moved north in the early 1800s. In 1830 though, this John is living near many families with the surname of Pitts (like his mother's maiden name.) If he was this John, he and his wife were born after 1790. They had at least 2 daughters and one son. (C-1573)

Notes:

Jehu was possibly a member of the Bush River Baptist Church before 1820. He was having children in Boyd's Mills, Laurens Co., SC by 1829. Jehu moved to Dekalb Co., AL with his family in 1835. Though they are buried in Etowah Co., AL. It was Dekalb Co., AL when they were buried there. He was supposedly a member of the Popular Springs Church in Dekalb Co. Michael Tucker, a current descendant visits regularly to keep their markers in good shape. (C-1594, 1992, 2080)

The following info was provided by Mary Abernathy Meyer to the Coates Discussion Group. "The father of Henry C. Coats (1829-1910) was Jehu Coats (1802-1854) of Newberry Co. SC who married Mary Polly Johnson (1811-1897) about 1826 in Newberry Co. South Carolina. Jehu Coats' father was Henry Coate. Jehu was a store owner who bought land in 1842; he wound up in Dekalb Co. AL. Jehu Coats' other children besides Henry C. Coats were Isaac T. (b about 1827 in Newberry Co. SC), Daniel P. (m Elizabeth Parker), Terrel J. (died in Civil War), John S., James A. (killed in Battle of Shiloh 1862), Cinderella F. (b 1844), Sarah Elizabeth, and Nancy (1850-1931) who married Patrick M Fraizer."

Jehu married Mary Polly JOHNSON about 1826 in , Newberry, SC, USA. Mary was born in 1811 in , , SC, USA; died on 28 Sep 1897 in , Dekalb, AL; was buried after 28 Sep 1897 in , Etowah, AL. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
