    Notes:

He might be the Samuel who purchased land in 1737 in Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania (C-1976) He might be the Samuel who was in the Pennsylvania Gazette as lately having imported "Godfrey Cordial, Daffy Elixir, Freeman Grand Elixir, Freeman Cordial, Elixir Proprietatis, Spirit of Scurvey grass, Bathing Spirits, Hugary water and Madder" available in his shop on Market Street in Philadelphia. I suspect however, that the store owner was the Samuel who was the son of Thomas Coates and Beulah Jacques. He might also be the Samuel that was sent a letter on Oct 24, 1754 to the Philadelphia Post Office which never got delivered. (C-1681, 1808)

Samuel married Elizabeth MENDENHALL on 11 Mar 1743 in East Caln, Chester, PA. Notes:

The accomplishment of Moses' and Priscilla's marriage was recorded in the Falls Monthly men's minutes, Bucks Co., PA on 5/4/1747 with a certificate from the Gwinedd Monthly Meeting. Moses was listed as belonging to the North Wales Monthly Meeting in these minutes. Moses Jr. was willed a cow by his father in 1761. He was a private in the American Revolution as was his nephew, Moses also. (C-1615, 1977, 2154)

Moses married Priscilla HUTCHINSON on 3 Apr 1747 in Gwinedd M.M., Bucks, PA. Priscilla was born on 28 Nov 1726 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 7.  William COATESWilliam COATES Descendancy chart to this point (1.Susanna1) was born in 1724 in Providence, Montgomery, PA; died before 1760.

    Notes:

William died young and unmarried according to most sources. However, he is also one of the strong (adult) sons listed in a poem about Moses' children, so his early death might simply apply to a death earlier than the times expected. Gary Coats of Oregon once listed this William as the one who wrote his will on Jun 1, 1783 and then died on June 15, 1783 in Camden Co., South Carolina. He was the husband of Frances. Although the ancestry of William, husband of Frances, is not yet solidly proven, he being the son of Moses and Susannah is just one of the possible lines of his ascent. (C-1656)

Big John is also theorized by some to be the son of this William, born between 1712 and 1724. (Jack Coats book) We know by YDNA that Big John is NOT the son of William and Frances Coats.

  7. 8.  Jonathan COATESJonathan COATES Descendancy chart to this point (1.Susanna1) was born on 17 Nov 1728 in New Providence, Philadelphia, PA; died on 27 May 1807.

    Notes:

Jonathan Coates owned a store in Charlestown, Pennsylvania which was mentioned in the Philadelphia Gazette when a road was being split into 2 roads near his home articled on Aug. 17, 1758. Jonathan Coates of Charlestown, yeoman, wifth is wife Jane deeded land to Charles Norris of Philadelphia to help pay off a debt they had to him. The land was in Charlestown bounded by French Creek. Two of it's previous owners had been Moses Coates, Jr. and Aaron Coates. (C-2139) Jonathan was a witness to the will of John Christie Tredyffrin on Dec. 10, 1762. There is the possibility that he is a relative of John Christie's wife, Sarah or to John himself, though he could just also have been a family friend. (C-1789)

"HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA" , by Futhey and Cope stated "The New Holland and Ephrata Post will set off, beginning April 24, 1766, from the house of Joseph Vandegriff, Cross Keys, 3d & Chestnut St, Phila. every Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock and deliver newspapers and letters on that day. At the Gulph Tavern, at the sign of the King of Prussia, at the Valley Forge, at the Bull Tavern, at Mr Jonathan Coates's in Charlestown, at Mr George Christman's in Pikeland, at Mr Robert Ralston's and at Mr David Thomas's in Vincent twp. Letters delivered for 4 pence each - small errands performed for 6 pence each; horses taken up and down."

There is a series of letters written to Jonathan that were never picked up in the post office of Charles Town, PA dated Aug 5, 1756, Jan 3, 1760, and in the Chester Co. P.O. on Apr 7, 1757, Jan 12, 1758 , July 31, 1760 and Jan 13, 1765. This Jonathan was likely the commissioner of that name that was one of many appointed to make the River Schylkill navigable. It was a large project that was supported with subscriptions (taxes) in that region and was written up in great detail on Mar 19, 1761 in the PA Gazette. (C-1681)

He is likely the witness in the following will dated 1762. PA Will Book M p. 378 # 218Will of Rachel StarrCharles TownshipWidowson Joseph Starrson John Starrson James Starr and Moses Starrdaughter in laws Rebecca Starr, Hannah Starr, son in law Richardsondaughter Rachelgranddaughter Rebecca Starr, daughter of her son Josephgrandchildren listed Joseph Starr, junr, James Starr, Samuel Starr, Isaac Starr, Rebecca Starr, Mary Starr and Rachel Starr children of my son Josephalso John Starr, James Starr, Thomas Starr and Mary Starr childrenof my son Johnalso Sarah Starr, Rachel Starr and Hannah Starr children of my son Jamesalso her son Moses children by his last wife doesn't name them or heralso Elizabeth Williams, James Williams and Rachel Williams children of her daughter Rachel Fordersigned 1762wit William Lewis, James Hancock, William Fussell and Jonathan Coatsprobated Oct 22, 1762

This Jonathan was probably involved in the patent for purchase of caveat-disputed land in 1769 in Pennsylvania. (C-1670, 1783) There is a Jonathan Coates who who received a patent for 192 acres in York Co., PA in 1770 that might apply to this Jonathan or another Jonathan of similar peerage also living in Pennsylvania (PA Patent Index) He might be the Jonathan who married Jane Stinson on Nov. 7, 1771 in the Pennsylvania Archives Series. He might be the Jonathan who was on the tax lists for Great Egg Harbor Twp., Burlington Co, NJ in Aug. 1773 (C-2292E)

He and his family are listed mulitple times in the Kennett Monthly Meeting records and were obviously Quakers. His marriage and the births of his children are recorded in the Uwchlan Monthly Meeting, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. They received certificates of transfer to the Kennett Monthly Meeting on Jun 5, 1783 with their minor children from Susanna to Elizabeth listed. Kennett was also in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. All but Jonathan Jr. of their older children were listed as moving to Kennett also in seperate statements. Jonathan and his wife Jane with children: Grace, Isaac, Jane and Elizabeth were granted a certificate of removal to Gunpowder MM from Kennett Monthly Meeting in Chester Co., PA on Aug 11, 1789. (C-2153) Gunpowder Monthly Meeting is in Sparks Glencoe, Maryland.

Jonathan married Jane LONGSTRETH on 22 Apr 1755 in Abington M.M., Chester, PA. Jane (daughter of Benjamin LONGSTRETCH and Ann UNKNOWN) was born on 23 Nov 1735 in Warminster, Bucks, PA; died before 15 Apr 1802. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 35. Ann COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 12 May 1757 in , Chester, PA; died after 1789.
    2. 36. James COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 22 May 1759 in , Chester, PA; and died.
    3. 37. Hannah COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 5 Jul 1761 in , Chester, PA; and died.
    4. 38. Jonathan COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 28 May 1764 in , Chester, PA; and died.
    5. 39. Phebe COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 23 Jul 1766 in , Chester, PA; and died.
    6. 40. Susanna COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 23 Jul 1766 in , Chester, PA; died after 1792 in of Maryland.
    7. 41. Kezia COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 24 Feb 1768 in , Chester, PA; died after 1791 in of Maryland.
    8. 42. Grace COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 16 Jul 1771 in , Chester, PA; died after 1789.

    10. 44. Jane COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 28 Aug 1776 in , Chester, PA; died after 1789.
    11. 45. Elizabeth COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 8 Aug 1779 in , Chester, PA; died after 1802 in of Maryland.

  8. 9.  Aaron COATESAaron COATES Descendancy chart to this point (1.Susanna1) was born about 1731 in Phoenixville, Chester, PA; died after 1767.

    Notes:

It is likely this Aaron who got a certificate to Gwynedd Monthly Meeting on 4/7/1749 from the Falls Monthly Meeting in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania (C-1682) He is also likely to be the Aaron who was listed with the Irish movement from Bradford, Chester Co., PA to the Warrington M.M., York Co., PA in 1767. (C-1741) According to Ettie Tidwell McCall's book, Aaron died unmarried. This disagrees with most other sources I've come across. He was willed 33 acres of land that had been surveyed for him in his fathers 1761 will. There is an Aaron who wrote his will in 1776 in Philadelphia, PA that might be him. According to descendant Janet Payne, he died between 1767 to 1779 in York Co., PA and a third source gives his death date as 1801 in Chester Co., PA where he's buried in Pikeland Friends Burial Ground. (C-1665, 1667, 1977)

Aaron married Rachel EASTBURN in Nov 1752. Rachel (daughter of John EASTBURN) died after 1771. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 46. Beulah COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born after 1752 in , , Pennsylvania; and died.
    2. 47. Grace COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born after 1753 in , , Pennsylvania; and died.
    3. 48. Aaron COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born after 1754 in , , Pennsylvania; and died.
    4. 49. Samuel COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born after 1755 in , , Pennsylvania; and died.
    5. 50. John COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born after 1756 in , , Pennsylvania; and died.
    6. 51. Benjamin COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 13 Oct 1763 in , Chester, PA; died after 1785.

  9. 10.  Benjamin COATESBenjamin COATES Descendancy chart to this point (1.Susanna1) was born about 1733 in Charleston, Montgomery, PA; died in 1801 in Pikeland, Chester, PA; was buried in 1801 in , Chester, PA.

    Notes:

Moses willed his son, Benjamin, his plantation (in Charles Town) plus 21 acres purchased from David David when he died in 1761. This is the Benjamin Coates who offered a reward of 3 lbs for John Wilson, age 21, who had "absconded from his bail" as in the PA Gazette on Jun 3, 1762. Benjamin was living in Charles town, Chester Co., PA at the time. (C-1755: #28750, C-1977) According to R.K. Montgomery, this family named Benjamin and Ann Longstreth Coats had children from 1758 till 1802. That would be over a 44 year period. Though possible, this is unlikely. I therefore suspect that the later children are by one of his sons, though this remains to be verified with actual records.

It is probable that some of Benjamin and Ann's children moved to North Carolina. I say this because of their daughter Cicely. She is the only Cicely Coates I have found in this time period, and there was a Cicely Coates who married a William Willis in Rowan Co., NC in 1810 and whose bondsman was Abner Coates (brother or father??). The census records for N.C. include a William and a Benjamin that might be her brothers. This needs checked. Family tradition is that Cicely came from a family with a lot of girls in it and this one would certainly match that tradition.

Benjamin married Ann LONGSTRETH on 22 Sep 1756 in , Montgomery, PA. Ann was born on 3 Nov 1737 in , Chester, PA; died in 1824. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    3. 54. Jane COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1760; and died.
    4. 55. Sarah COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1762; died before 1810.
    5. 56. Elizabeth COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1764; and died.
    6. 57. Anne COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1766; and died.

    Notes:

He might be the Jonathan Coate who was on the Great Egg Harbor Twp., Burlington Co., NJ tax lists for 1773. If, on the other hand, he turns out to be the Jonathan Coates of Charles Twp., Philadelphia, PA, then he was the executor of the will of Phillip Thomas. No relationship is stated. (C-2292E, E) There is a Jonathan Coates who received a patent for 192 acres in York Co., PA in 1770 that might apply to this Jonathan or another Jonathan of similar peerage also living in Pennsylvania (PA Patent Index) Any one of these Jonathan's could be the husband of Jane Stinson married on Nov. 7, 1771 in the Pennsylvania Archives, Series II. I think it's likely that this marriage belongs to this Jonathan if his wife Jane was married to a Stinson previous to their marriage.

    Notes:

The "History of Chester Co., PA" states that "Moses Coates possessed considerable inventive genius, and towards the close of the last century he contrived and constructed a curious apple-paring machine, which was at once simple, convenient, and highly useful in domestic economy. With some slight modifications the instrument is still in popular use. He also invented a self-setting saw-mill, which attracted much notice at the time, but of its practical importance at the present day we are unable to speak. He likewise claimed the invention of a horse-rake (which he demonstrated to President Jefferson: C-1614), among other ingenious implements. That instrument, however, was afterwards greatly improved and brought nearly to perfection in the intellectual community of Kennet Square and vicinity, where agricultural machinery of various kinds is produced on an extensive scale; but as the inventors and machinists are yet living and flourishing, their memoirs must await the historic efforts of some future county Plutarch." (C-1601)

He purchased a large tract of land that first was called Bridgetown (after his son-in-law, John Way's Hotel that had a sign of a Bridge) and then became Coatesville, PA when his son, Dr. Jesse Coates, named it in his father's honor in 1867. He built a sawmill, and a general store as parts of it's earliest constructions. He was not the original inhabitant of Bridgetown, but one of it's early white settlers. It had been an Indian village previous to William Fleming first building a home there. Moses later bought this home from William Fleming's son. The 14th post office in the county was opened in his store. He was the postmaster there and the town was named after him because of it. (C-1613, 1615) His sawmill was purchased by Isaac Pennock in 1810 who turned it into an Iron Mill run by his son-in-law, Dr. Lukens. It was called Brandywine Mills and then Lukens Rolling Mills. (C-1777)

It was Moses' son-in-law, Jesse Kersey, that got the idea of partitioning and selling their land off that bordered on the new Lancaster Turnpike, the first road through that territory. (Wikipedia article, c 2011) He entertained many an officer during the Revolutionary War, with General Washington often being one of his guests. (C-1615) According to the DAR index in 1966, p.140, he was also a Private in the Revolutionary War from the Pennsyvania Province.

He was married either in the Quakertown MM or in the Buckingham Monthly Meeting. A book on Philadelphia marriages lists it as Buckingham and my other second hand source lists it as Quakertown. He is bequeathed $50.00 in his brother in law's will, Abraham Musgrove, brother to Moses's wife, Hannah. It was probated Mar 24, 1775. (C-2149)

    Notes:

It is unusual for a Quaker to have a middle name, but it appears this family was Quaker, as John's son Aquilla was in the Hopewell MM in Frederick Co., VA as received on 5, 9 mo, 1822. This families birth dates are all recorded in the Uwchlan Monthly Meeting in Chester Co., Pennsylvania (C-1812, 2140)

    Notes:

Ann is probably the Ann that attended the marriage of Joseph Longstreth and Susannah Morris in 1774 in the Abbington M.M. along with her father, Jonathan. Ann, under her maiden name, was granted a certificate to Bradford MM from Kennett Monthly Meeting, PA on May 14, 1789. That was a month after her sisters had moved to Gunpowder Monthly Meeting. (C-2153) She might be the Ann Coats who married Zebulon Weathers on 16 Nov. 1786 in Baltimore Co., Maryland.

  26. 36.  James COATESJames COATES Descendancy chart to this point (8.Jonathan2, 1.Susanna1) was born on 22 May 1759 in , Chester, PA; and died.

    Notes:

He is likely the James Coates that was granted a certificate to Haverford MM, from Kennett Monthly Meeting, Chester Co., PA in Quaker records, dated 10 mon, 13 da 1785. I say might, because several of his family members seemed to be part of the Kennett Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. (C-2153) He is likely to be the James Coats who married Rachel Jackson on Mar. 9, 1793 in Baltimore Co., Maryland according to the Marriage Register of Rev.Lewis Richards, pastor of first Baptist Church. If true, he would have married out of unity.

  27. 37.  Hannah COATESHannah COATES Descendancy chart to this point (8.Jonathan2, 1.Susanna1) was born on 5 Jul 1761 in , Chester, PA; and died.

They were the first of their family to move there. (C-2153) A Hannah Coats, possibly this one, was a witness to the marriage of George Drinker and Ruth Miller at the Fairfax Monthly Mtg on 9th day of 7th mo 1795. This meeting was located in Loudon Co., VA.

  28. 38.  Jonathan COATESJonathan COATES Descendancy chart to this point (8.Jonathan2, 1.Susanna1) was born on 28 May 1764 in , Chester, PA; and died.

    Notes:

Jonathan, Jr. attended Bradford Monthly Meeting on Jun 6, 1782 from the Uwchlan Monthly Meeting in Chester Co., Pennsylvania He would have been all of 18 years of age at the time. Jonathan, Jr. was granted a certificate to Gunpowder Monthly Meeting from Kennett Monthly Meeting in Chester Co., PA on Jun. 11, 1789. (C-2140, 2153)

He was also known as John Coates in some sources. He is likely to be the Jonathan Coates who married Jane Stinson on Nov 7, 1771 in Pennsylvania Of course, this marriage could be a second marriage for his father instead. (C-1677) He could also be the Captain of an unnamed ship that is mentioned in the PA Gazette in the late 1700's. (C-1771)

  29. 39.  Phebe COATESPhebe COATES Descendancy chart to this point (8.Jonathan2, 1.Susanna1) was born on 23 Jul 1766 in , Chester, PA; and died.

    Notes:

She could be the Grace Coats who married Reynold Knox on Sep. 5, 1799 in Baltimore Co., St. Paul's Parish, Maryland. If true, she would likely have married out of unity.

  33. 43.  Isaac COATESIsaac COATES Descendancy chart to this point (8.Jonathan2, 1.Susanna1) was born on 8 Feb 1774 in , Chester, PA; died after 1789.

    Notes:

This Isaac might possibly be the Isaac who wrote a will in Philadelphia in 1786 (T, p. 366) or in 1790 (U, p. 49). (C-1686)

  34. 44.  Jane COATESJane COATES Descendancy chart to this point (8.Jonathan2, 1.Susanna1) was born on 28 Aug 1776 in , Chester, PA; died after 1789.

    Notes:

Elizabeth, d. of Jonathan and Jane, deSouth Carolina. married an Amos West in Maryland in 1802. This matches this Elizabeth by age and parents well. The date of the marriage which was from "Maryland Marriages, 1801-1820" by Robert Barnes was written in Quaker style, 15d, 4m 1802 suggesting this was a Quaker marriage record.

Family/Spouse: Amos WEST. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  36. 46.  Beulah COATESBeulah COATES Descendancy chart to this point (9.Aaron2, 1.Susanna1) was born after 1752 in , , Pennsylvania; and died.

    Notes:

He might be the Samuel Coates who was elected as a contributor to the Pennsylvania Hospital on May 7, 1792. (Federal Gazette Newspaper) He might also be the Samuel who was a merchant living at 82 Fourth Front St. in Philadelphia in 1798. (C-1983)

  40. 50.  John COATESJohn COATES Descendancy chart to this point (9.Aaron2, 1.Susanna1) was born after 1756 in , , Pennsylvania; and died.

    Notes:

Any of the following records might apply to this John. 1) John Coates who married a Diodema Griffith on Apr. 28, 1796 in the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia. (C-1683) or 2) John Coates who was married to Elisabeth Roberts and had one daughter born in Chester Co., PA named Ann J. Coates. She was born on Jun 12, 1800. (C-2138)

  41. 51.  Benjamin COATESBenjamin COATES Descendancy chart to this point (9.Aaron2, 1.Susanna1) was born on 13 Oct 1763 in , Chester, PA; died after 1785.

    Notes:

Benjamin is listed as the grandson of John Eastburn, in his grandfather's will probated in Philadelphia in 1772. This Benjamin is the likely Benjamin Coates who has children Isaac and Elizabeth who die in the Philadelphia MM region in 1783 and 1785 respectively according to Hinshaw. "Isaac, son of Benjamin, buried 12/10/1783" and "Elizabeth, daughter of Benjamin, buried 2/8/1785" (VOL. 2, PAGE 347)

  43. 53.  William COATESWilliam COATES Descendancy chart to this point (10.Benjamin2, 1.Susanna1) was born about 1758 in Montgomery, Lycoming, PA; died on 18 Oct 1834 in Bradford M.M., Chester, PA.

    Notes:

William was in the Uwchlan Monthly Meeting when he went to the Abington Monthly Meeting on the 7th mo., 6th day, 1780. (C-2140)

There is a possibility that this William Coate married a second wife, Mary Hambleton in Bucks Co., PA by 1799. If it turns out that Rebecca Stalker dies before 1799, I would suggest even more strongly that this is likely. I say this because the William marrying Mary Hambelton names a son Moses. Moses is a common name in this William's family. He lived in Pennsylvania. He was descended from the original Moses and Susannah Weldon Coates in PA and he is the only William that I have been able to find in this time period who could be him in this branch of the family.

Family/Spouse: Rebecca STALKER. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Abner shows up in multiple Posey Co., Indiana Court records from 1819 to 1826. His wife, Margaret, is in one of the court cases in May of 1821. There is also a Benjamin Coats often in those same records from Feb. 1822 through August 1830 that I suspect would be his son or brother if the death date I have for brother Benjamin of 1820 is incorrect. Other Coats that could be children of Abner and Margaret listed in those same records are: James, George, Ann, Jesse and Lacy Coats. Even if this Abner turns out not to be the one who died after 1826, I most certainly would suspect that the Abner and Margaret who were in Posey Co., IN was a son or nephew of this Abner from Chester Co. Pennsylvania.

Family/Spouse: Margaret TUSSY. Margaret died after 1821 in Of Posey, , IN. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Amos moved his family to Stark Co., Ohio They had 12 children. (C-1602) The following letter was sent by him to his brother (probably Caleb) in 1861 as conveyed in Truman's book and transcribed by Charlotte Coats."Marlborouh, Ohio 8th 19th 1861Dear Brother -I hardly need apologize for my omission in conveying my ideas in answer to they kind epistle of the 4th of 10th mo although my time has been occupied in different spheres; still one of them should undoubtedly have been applied for they special benefit, and I am aware, gratification, but so it is.I can hardly tell the cause, one thing certain thee may rest assured of, it is not for want of kind and Brotherly affections; the warmest degree of love rests between our hearts, and it is a pleasure for me to occupy that thought, in casting reflection on former days Ah, were the times to be lived over again how they might be improved, but the days and years have glided away, and left many a blank, that should have been devoted to the cause of righteousness and left us stars of gratitude to be gaxed at with heavenly joy, and crowned minds with that love by remembrance, that would not be shaded with spots to cause anguish by their not being obliterated in the outset.I am aware that I have fallen far short of the duties that have been incumbent upon me, in the purpose of Creation, and it is a mournful thought when applied to self, when time is nearly in full measure and running over for us, yet, morally speaking we have traveled our Journey in life with good esteem without wilful defect to our fellowmen. A consoling idea; now as our gray hairs are fast wafting away; it is consoling to think that there has been an advocate, pleading within us, and directing to that peace which crowns the mortal soul with those beauties that difnify man and prepare him for the realms of bliss that never fades away.I do really mourn, that so much intelligence as we have in this age is cast ot gratify self, and not applied to that purpose which man was created for that is to glory his Maker. Yet he is dishonored by the worldly, by the laws of the world. The meek and humble that was placed upon the Cross and expired between two thieves, who could have called legions of angels to his assitance, had he been as the rulers of this world, but may "forgive them", was his request. He carried out the nonresistance principle; (which is not a life-taking principle) that is the only platform or conveyance that the Christian can be supported by. His precepts and example and whole life evidently substantiate the fact; for when Cain slew his brother Abel teh great and might Judge, the only righteous, put no the sentence of death upon him, but marked him that none should distrub him. Here is the first murder, an the first Judicial court, with the Judge of Heaven and of earth, who decides for man to live and work out his own Salvation. If our Judges were to take precedence from this court and not from modern laws, happy would be the efffect, but now it's blood for blood; how unrational, unnatural and brutish. We hear it expressed every day, by bloodthirsty men when they are brought to their feelings and saying that it's aweful that Fathers and sons and brothers, in carnage against each other, this is self evident of the unreighteousness of the life-takin gprinciple, for it is murder in taking human life in any case, or human law, for it is written, whence cometh wars and fighting? Come they not of your lust? Yes, self-gratification, the inst of the flesh, of the eye, and pride of life generates animosities and turns love into hartred, and all consequent evils. I received a letter from my dear and kind niece, Lucretia, of the 22nd, 6th month last, which was invigorating to my spririt, with the exception of they judisposition of health which was affecting, but we are liable to afflictions, and our tender nerves worn by age are eaily affected but to be prepared for the torments of this world, of body and mind, is the beauty of this life, and the crown and felicity in that of the future. I must change my theme, as thee wants a genealogy. As thee has mine with the exception of Howard H. Coates, who is 23, and Ridgeway Coates, my youngest child, is near 21 years of age. Moses' wife's name was Mary Ann Young, his youngest child was William C. about 16, and George S. about 6 years of age. Morris's wife's name was Mary Ann Randolph, their eldest son Silvanus about 15, Moses 12 and Evaline 9 years of age. Hannah married Joseph D. Arnold (wh died last 4th month, a fine man he was). Their eldest son James Monroe about 11, Bell 7, Florence 5 and Gertrude 3 years of age. Hayes C., married Emeline Ward, their eldest son, Alfred, about 13, Phebe 11, and Larua 7 years of age. Jesse married Virginia Brown, their eldest Leona Gertrude 11, John 9, Elmer 7, Mariah 5, and Clifford 3 years of age. George married Mary Black, eldest Jane about 9, Harriett 7 Years. Oliver married Catharine Lane, one son Edwin. Mary Ann, married Joseph Constantine Warner, have none living. Howard married Cordelia Hale, one son about 1 year old.I have given a pretty good share, and as near as I can come to ages. Ridgeway is single, is in Indiana, or out west with the (pump patent).Thy son Lewis, was here yesterday, from the South, probably leaves tomorrow for Philadelphia. He has become qutie a southern principled man. I was astonished to hear him on southern topics. I think it a pity such a mind as his sould become so contaiminated with such inhuman principles, but he is not the first nor only one that has been led estray. But as permanently as he is fixed there is a higher story of the mind for him to ascend which will finally have to be inhabited by purer motives, than the present occupied, to gain the point of his noble creation. It is most enough for man to know himself, enough for him to know, but in that stead, he seeks the observation and geography of others, poor human nature, how frail, as not to know what human nature is Vile is the dipsosition that abandons that which is would not be willing to accept, (that is the ation of self love). Lewis may possibly view these lines and he knows how to extend my views. Covetuousness is apt to lead the mind to any length and almost any thing, becaue it is the boon of sin, and the highest seat of Lucifer. I have omitted Amos W. my next after Oliver. He married Ada S. Freer, have one child, Horace Lucian Coates, over a year ago. I have left off housekeeping. Shall make my home pretty much with Amos, at Paris, in this County, 11 miles from here, so letters may be directed here for me. I have not been out this summer with my pump, times are dull, nothing in a manner doing, crops were rather slim in this seciton of most all kinds, the weather being very dry for summer vegetation. All are in pretty good health. Lewis can inform thee I had a pretty hard attack of typhoid this spring, feel pretty well except my old liver complaint. With much love to thee, Lucretia and all they family. affectionate Brother, Amos Coates"

    Notes:

Jesse was the youngest child of Moses Jr. Dr. Jesse owned much of the land of Coatesville, that was named after his grandfather. It did not become a town until Jesse Coate's time period. Jesse was a well respected citizen and prominent physician who did much for his community. He began his practice as physican in 1818. A joint building for public worship to be used by the Episcoplians, Baptists, Presbyterians and Methodists was erected in 1832. He was one of three persons to whom this property was deeded and as such was a manager of the building.

He sold much of his land to enterprising persons who would further the development of Coatesville. (C-1601, 1615) His cemetery stone can be found in a current day backstreet of Coatesville, Pennsylvania. His death date on it does not seem to agree with the one published for him in 2nd hand sources. It appears to be 3/3/1868 instead but it is very difficult reading. However, sources like "The Pennsylvania Genealogical Catalogue: Chester County 1809-1870" state on August 8, 1868, VILLAGE RECORD, Death Notice COATES - On second day, the 3d inst., Dr. JESSE COATES, in his 73d year.

Sarah died without having had any children. Her husband remarried. Before her marriage, she was a milliner and dressmaker of renown at the "corner stores". She was known for her great accuracy of fit. She always dressed in silk herself and was called a true "thoroughbred". She was strongly against slavery and made her home a station in the underground railroad. She died of cancer while sitting in her favorite chair. Her will included the stipulation that her husband spare all of her money that he could to continue to support the anti-slavery movement.
