  1. 1.  Benjamin COATESBenjamin COATES was born about 1733 in Charleston, Montgomery, PA; died in 1801 in Pikeland, Chester, PA; was buried in 1801 in , Chester, PA.

    Notes:

    Moses willed his son, Benjamin, his plantation (in Charles Town) plus 21 acres purchased from David David when he died in 1761. This is the Benjamin Coates who offered a reward of 3 lbs for John Wilson, age 21, who had "absconded from his bail" as in the PA Gazette on Jun 3, 1762. Benjamin was living in Charles town, Chester Co., PA at the time. (C-1755: #28750, C-1977) According to R.K. Montgomery, this family named Benjamin and Ann Longstreth Coats had children from 1758 till 1802. That would be over a 44 year period. Though possible, this is unlikely. I therefore suspect that the later children are by one of his sons, though this remains to be verified with actual records.

    It is probable that some of Benjamin and Ann's children moved to North Carolina. I say this because of their daughter Cicely. She is the only Cicely Coates I have found in this time period, and there was a Cicely Coates who married a William Willis in Rowan Co., NC in 1810 and whose bondsman was Abner Coates (brother or father??). The census records for N.C. include a William and a Benjamin that might be her brothers. This needs checked. Family tradition is that Cicely came from a family with a lot of girls in it and this one would certainly match that tradition.

    Benjamin married Ann LONGSTRETH on 22 Sep 1756 in , Montgomery, PA. Ann was born on 3 Nov 1737 in , Chester, PA; died in 1824. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    William was in the Uwchlan Monthly Meeting when he went to the Abington Monthly Meeting on the 7th mo., 6th day, 1780. (C-2140)

    There is a possibility that this William Coate married a second wife, Mary Hambleton in Bucks Co., PA by 1799. If it turns out that Rebecca Stalker dies before 1799, I would suggest even more strongly that this is likely. I say this because the William marrying Mary Hambelton names a son Moses. Moses is a common name in this William's family. He lived in Pennsylvania. He was descended from the original Moses and Susannah Weldon Coates in PA and he is the only William that I have been able to find in this time period who could be him in this branch of the family.

    Notes:

    Abner shows up in multiple Posey Co., Indiana Court records from 1819 to 1826. His wife, Margaret, is in one of the court cases in May of 1821. There is also a Benjamin Coats often in those same records from Feb. 1822 through August 1830 that I suspect would be his son or brother if the death date I have for brother Benjamin of 1820 is incorrect. Other Coats that could be children of Abner and Margaret listed in those same records are: James, George, Ann, Jesse and Lacy Coats. Even if this Abner turns out not to be the one who died after 1826, I most certainly would suspect that the Abner and Margaret who were in Posey Co., IN was a son or nephew of this Abner from Chester Co. Pennsylvania.
