Notes:

Mark is on the Newberry twp., Miami Co., OH tax lists for 1835. He's located in the same place in the 1830 and 1840 census records also. In the 1830 census, he is living next door to a James Coats who is between the age of 50 and 60. I'm assuming this is his father in Newberry Twp, Miami Co, OH P46. In 1840, he is listed as Mark Couts, Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH, p370. In 1850 his last name is spelled Coates and he is living in Mercer Co., Ohio. In 1850, his name is spelled Coates and he is living in Recovery Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio, p. 307. It is estimated that he and his family and brother John C.'s family moved to Honey Creek Twp., Iowa sbout 1854-55 where he is listed in the 1860 - 1880 census records. The 1880 census lists him as living in the town of Koszta in Honey Creek Twp. and lists his birthplace as South Carolina. In the 1900 census, his daughters Fannie and Susanna list their father born in Virginia and their mother in Pennsylvania. On May 08, 1860 for $25 he deeded Honey Creek Twp about 2 acres for the Koszta cemetery that he and his wife were later buried in. Guy Coates gives his birth date as May 27, 1806 and his possible twin, Mary's birth date as July 10, 1806. He is living in Iowa in the 1860 and 1880 census records where he lists his place of birth and that of his parents as in South Carolina.

He was killed in a dynamite accident in a mine, he and 2 other men were attempting to blast. He left a wife and 3 young children. He was the youngest child of Mark and his wife of Kosta, Iowa.
