Family tradition says that blonde haired Michael was a sheepherder in the old country and brunette haired Susan (Mary) Hruskovic was a cook for 30 people. These two met when they lived on either side of the border. (What border it is not known.) They were married in Austria and had two children, Mary and Anna, before they came to America (D-18). She remembers fondly the serenade their friends gave them that Saturday night from the railroad tracks, just outside her mother-in-law's home. They sang "Johnny is home". Two others were born dead and one daughter only lived 24 hours. They divorced and he remarried Marion Hicks in 1948. After her death in 1960 he married Dorothy Gould also of Olean, N.Y. (1965). They were divorced in 1980. He lived in Olean, N.Y. for the last 46 years of his life. He was a retired auto mechanic and radio repairman, as well as a retired master sergeant in the National Guard. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps. He was a member and president of the Civil Defense Auxillary Police and a member of VFW Post 1619 and the American Legion Post in Olean. Later she was employed at Olsen's Department store, Davis Bakery, S.K. Tate Furs and Fashionland, and then returned to Bell Telephone from which she retired. She was a lifelong and devout member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. Surviving is a son, David (Marlene) Carter of Mississippi, a daughter, Nancy C. (Gareth) Evans of Willow Creek, a sister Sue Anne (Lou) Pupo of Bradford, a brother, John (Doris) Dudick of CA, five grandchildren: Rob (Lynette) Carter, Eric (Amanda) Carter, Jason Carter, Brian (Angel Dowell) Swanson and Brenda (James) Pascarella, fourteen great grandchildren, two great great granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, a sister and a son, Christopher. Family will be receiving friends on Sunday, January 31, 2010, from 3:00 to 5:00PM at the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. On May 25, 1945, Donald was stationed at Langley Field in Virginia when his mother, Aunt both of 383 Congress St., Bradford, PA and 1st cousin, Margaret Kutchmire of Lewis Run, PA went to visit him and see him married the next day on May 26th to Miss English. By June 20 of 1945 he was stationed at the Army Air Field in Florida according to the Bradford Era. It left him with a heart condition. He was an accountant for Bradford Supply Company until it moved from Bradford. He then worked for Dresser Clark of Olean, NY. He was a member of St. Bernard Church, the American Legion, Moose Lodge 124, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Disabled American Veterans and the Bradford Vets Club. 28. | ![]() ![]() Notes: John Dudick was born and raised in Bradford, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force Reserve as an aviation cadet in 1944. He was called to active duty in March 1945. The war in Europe ended in May of 1945, and aviation cadets were not needed so he did not get a chance to fly. Interestingly, he graduated from St. Bernard High School in June of 1945, 3 months after he was called to active duty according to the Bradford Era Newspaper. He did solo, at his own expense, at Desert Skyway Airport, Boulder City, Nevada in November, 1945. He did not see combat but was a member of the occupational forces in Germany after the war was over. In a June 29, 1945 Bradford Era newspaper, his parents had received notice that he was promoted from Private to Corporal. He did get to sit in on the Nuremberg War Trials in the fall of 1946. John married Doris (Rosa) June FORTE on 3 Feb 1949 in Buffalo, Erie, NY, USA. 29. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Edward C. Dudick was in the service in World War II. He was transferred from Texas to Boca Raton, Florida according to the Bradford Era during the week of June 24, 1946. In the May 6, 1947 news, he was listing as having achieved Corporal. He was stationed in the Memphis, Tennessee Airport. After serving three years, he was discharged in 1949. However, he was recalled to active duty and left to go to Erie where he joined up with reservists bound for Langley Field, VA as a Corporal on Aug. 29, 1951. He was in the Airforce.
