  1. 1.  Thomas COATSThomas COATS was born about 1675 in Glasgow, , SCT; died after 1753.

    Notes:

Thomas had two known sons, William and Joseph, both of whom immigrated to South Carolina between 1715 and 1725 at Charles Town. (C-2118, 2270E) Neva Coats supplied the following transcription to Charlotte Coats Siercks internet site that supposedly applies to this Thomas Coates. "Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Coats of the City of Glassgow in the Kingdom of North Britain Maltman have made, ordained constituted and appointed and by these presents do make ordain constitute and appoint Robert and William Brisbanes Merchants in Charles Town in South Carolina both or either of them my true and lawful attorneys or attorney for me and in my name and for my use to ask demand levy recover and receive all and Sundry goods debts sums of money chattels and effects dues and duty's whatsoever which were belonging in due and owing to the now deceased Mr. William Coates my son some time minister of the Gospel in the parish of St. Georges Dorchester in South Carolina by whatsoever person or persons whatsoever manner of way & for whatsoever cause or occasion & that have become due since his decease & upon nonpayment thereof the persons liable in payment of the same their Exers & Adors for me & in my name to sue arrest imprison implead & prosecute for the same & upon such suit to proceed to judgment & execution & thereupon the debtors their exors and Admors in prison to hold & keep until payment thereof be made with all coats & damages sustained or to be sustained by the detaining of the same and upon payment thereof the said debtors & theirs aforesaid: forth out of prison to discharge & acquitances for the same or any part thereof for me & in my name to make seal & deliver & also to do perform & execute all & every lawful & reasonable acts & things whatsoever both for obtaining & discharging of the same as shall be needful to be done giving & hereby granting upon my said attorneys or attorney my full and absolute power in the premises ratifying and holding firm all & whatsoever my said attorney or attorney shall lawfully do or cause to be done in and about the premises in virtue of this presents In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Glasgow the twenty first day of March in the 26th year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain France & Ireland King defender of the faith and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & fifty three years signed: Thomas Coats (LS) Signed sealed and delivered in presence of, James Coats, John Wilson Sr., Arch Coats Before Justice of the Peace for the Shire of Lanark these are to certify that the above Thomas Coatts appeared this day....signed John (seal) Brown. 1. 2.  William COATS, Sr.William COATS, Sr. Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born in 1700 in Glasgow, , SCT; died on 21 Mar 1753 in Of St. George Parish, Dorchester, SC.

    Notes:

He lived in St. George Parish, Dorchester Co., SC as an adult. He is listed as "the recently deceased son of Thomas Coates, a Maltman, of Glasgow, Northern Great Britain" in appointment of attorney to recover William's estate on March 21st/26th, 1753. He was listed as a sometimes minister in his father's will. According to some miscellaneous records from "Grampa" Joe Coates, William Sr. also had a son named John, born about 1755 in South Carolina. This date would be a little too late if it was his son, as he died in 1753 in Dorchester Co., South Carolina. This county is northwest of Charleston and southeast of Newberry Co. in what would have been partly in Berkeley and partly in Colleton District, SC at the time. (C-1638)

William married Unknown before 1735. Unknown died before 1757 in of Charleston, SC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 7. James COATE  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1737 in , , SC, USA; died after 1806 in Of Chester, SC, USA.

  3. 4.  David COATSDavid COATS Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born after 1700; and died.

  4. 5.  John COATSJohn COATS Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born after 1700; and died.

  5. 6.  Joseph COATSJoseph COATS Descendancy chart to this point (1.Thomas1) was born in 1705 in , , ENG; died about 1791 in Orangeburgh District, , SC.

    Notes:

Joseph was living in SC by the year 1752, likely in what became called Orangeburg District in 1768. Below is a description of the land in which Joseph Coats lived...It was likely called Craven Co., SC to begin with, then Orangeburgh District and then Kershaw Co., SC after that. http://www.carolana.com/Carolina/Settlement/craven_county_original.html"One can argue that all of the existing counties within the state of South Carolina were eventually derived from this original Carolana county named Craven and this argument would withstand almost any counter-argument. However, it was not quite that cut and dried. As with all of the colonies, the establishment of counties and/or precincts was a slow and sometimes painful process as the population grew and local sentiments evolved over time.

However, well into the late 1700s, even after the American Revolution, many citizens continued to consider themselves as living in Craven County...In 1682, the Lords Proprietors decided to establish two new counties, south of Craven, and these were named Berkeley and Colleton. Craven was deemed to lie between the Cape Fear River (in present-day North Carolina) and southward to the mouth of the Awendaw Creek in present-day Berkeley County, South Carolina...In 1768, South Carolina eliminated all counties, including Craven County and established seven new "Districts," with governmental seats in each district. From 1768 to 1785, these districts remained intact, however, the district seats did change some during that time-frame. These were : Beaufort District, Camden District, Charles Town District, Cheraws District, George Town District, Ninety-Six District, and Orangeburgh District...With the creation of the first overarching Districts in 1768, the name Craven County was abolished, never to be resurrected in the state of South Carolina. However, North Carolina has had a Craven County in existence since 1712 to the present day. Apparently, one is enough for the two Carolinas.

If one were to attempt to determine which of the current South Carolina counties are actually situated within the last incarnation of Craven County prior to its elimination in 1768, the best guess would have to include: all of Horry, Georgetown, Williamsburg, Marion, Darlington, Florence, Dillon, Marlboro, Chesterfield, Lee, and Lancaster counties, and parts of Charleston, Berkeley, Clarendon, Sumter, and Kershaw counties."

He was a Baptist minister for Swift Creek Church (Charleston Association Minutes). He was whipped for preaching near Cheraw Hill sometime before 1772 by the Baptist Community. They justified it because of "Cate's" immorality. There is a current day Swift Creek Baptist Church near Camden, Kershaw Co., SC that had a famous early settler named Cheraw that is likely where he lived at the time. This area is locate east and slightly north of Columbia, SC. (C-598a) He or his son Joseph is listed in the 1778 census for Camden District (Kershaw Co.), South Carolina.

When Joseph died in Orangeburgh his likely son, Joseph, appears to have inherited his property. His death date is theorized to be 1791 by Beverly Burton as his "messenger" position at Swift Creek Church was taken over in that year. He or his son Joseph are probably the Joseph Coats who purchased 300 acres of land in Craven Co., SC on Nov. 4, 1772. Joseph purchased 100 acres of land from adjoining land owned by William Scott of Craven Co., SC previous to 1779. He was a witness to William Scott's will (of Craven Co., SC) in 1779 along with a John Coate (his son?). William Scott apparently didn't die till 1794 when John went before the court in Kershaw Co., SC to testify as to the accuracy of William Scott's will.(C-910)

It is complete theory on my part who his children are. I will state under each child's name why they have been included in this list.

  1. 7.  James COATEJames COATE Descendancy chart to this point (2.William2, 1.Thomas1) was born about 1737 in , , SC, USA; died after 1806 in Of Chester, SC, USA.

    Notes:

Though attributed to him, he is not the James Coate who dies on Nov. 7, 1817. That James was the son of Gentleman John Coate and his will was probated on that date. Notley deeded his land to James Coates and Henry Head in 1804 in Chester Co., SC Deed Book M, p. 331-335. It is difficult to read, but it looks like when the deed was filed for James Coates purchase on Oct. 22, 1806, Notley was listed as Notley, late... indicating death. (C-912, 1780) James Coats (brother or son of Notley) and Notley's wife were the executors of his will. (C-1716)

  2. 8.  Eliaha (Elisha) COATEEliaha (Elisha) COATE Descendancy chart to this point (2.William2, 1.Thomas1) was born about 1739; and died.

  3. 9.  John COATSJohn COATS Descendancy chart to this point (2.William2, 1.Thomas1) was born after 1740; and died.

  4. 10.  Joseph COATSJoseph COATS Descendancy chart to this point (6.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born before 1750; died after 1820 in Of Camden, Kershaw, SC.

    Notes:

He lived in Orangeburgh District, SC in 1790 with 1 male over 16, 2 females and was listed under the name of Joseph Coats. He is living next door to his probable father-in-law, John Hickman at the time on the Edisto River. According to the description on the title page of the census, this was in the south part of Orangeburg District, South Carolina.

I've estimated his birth date before the 1750's from his son Sion's birth date of 1770 and his son, Elijah's birth date from before 1766. He appears to have inherited his father's farm in Orangeburgh, but has moved from there to Camden, Kershaw Co., SC by 1792 when the following court records appear, on 2/28/1792 on the Petit Jury and on 3/5/1793 in a suit, Joseph Coats vs. Henry Hudson and on 3/4/1794, Joseph Coats V. James Gunn & Thomas Smyrl.

I believe he is the son of the Joseph who was the minister, because there is indication that he inherited his father Joseph's land upon his death according to Beverly Burton. He also applies for a Revolutionary War pension in 1796 that has receipts in it witnessed by a possible brother, David Coates in 1784. Specifically, he is listed as Mr. Joseph Coates in an extensive bookkeeping record of his financial transactions as they relate to the court and militia records from 1780-1786 in Charleston, South Carolina. Included in these accounts is a David Coates in 1784 who swore to an exchange of supplies consisting of 5 bushels of corn and 10 bushels of oats involving Joseph Coates. Joseph apparently fought in the Revolutionary War as he submitted documents witnessed by "brother" David in 1796 I assume to get a pension. (C-1708, 1952) David is also in the Kershaw County Court minutes from 1792 to 1796. (C-1708) We do not know when Joseph Coats died. He might be the J. Coats in the 1810 census for South Carolina, Orangeburg, Page 130. In this, J. Coats has one son under age 10, he was between 26 and 45, he had 2 daughters under age 10, and a wife age 26-45. He was living next to J. Sellers on one side, J. More and J. Thomas on the other. This however, does not match the age we have him at from his supposed son's birthdates.

There is a possibility that David and Joseph are sons of a William Coate of Charleston, SC instead. The following is a record for a Joseph Coates in Charleston, South Carolina. Notes:

He is the head of household and living in Kershaw Co., SC in the 1800 census and is between the age of 26 and 45. He is living in Kershaw Co., SC in the 1820 census with a son under age 10, one from 10-15, one from 16-25, and he is over age 45. His wife is between the ages of 26 and 44. They have a daughter under 10, one from 10-15 and one from 16 to 25 years of age. I might have misinterpreted the spelling of his name as it's a bit difficult to read. He is living directly between a James Coate and David Coate, (Jnr). David is his age. James is a generation younger and I suspect he could be Lemuel's son. In the 1840 census, he could be the the Lemuel Coats living in Benton Co., Alabama along with his brother David. The only reason I've connected him as a son of Joseph, is that he is likely to be David's brother in the 1820 census for Kershaw Co., South Carolina. He is living next door to him and is the same age as him. He is also listed as the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Ann Marr Coates in Rhonda Pohner's ancestry at www.ancestry.com.

Family/Spouse: Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 23. James COATES  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1775; died after 1820 in Of Kershaw, SC.

  6. 12.  John COATSJohn COATS Descendancy chart to this point (6.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born in 1755; died after 1798 in Of Kershaw, SC.

    Notes:

It appears that John is a likely brother of David Coates of Kershaw Co., SC as they are both named in a lawsuit against Elizabeth Scott in 1796. I theorize that he is also a brother to the other Coates living in Kershaw Co. at the time and the son of Joseph. He and Joseph witnessed the 1779 will of William Scott when Joseph was an adjacent land owner to William in Craven Co., South Carolina. John is in the following Kershaw Co., SC court minutes: 2/20/1793, "appeared in open court to prove Will of Wm. Scott"; 3/3/1794, administration of James Scott's estate; 3/3/1794, Jury Duty same day; 3/4/1794, suit, Jesse Reaves vs. John Coats; 2/11/1795, Suit, Gardner Ford vs James Gunn & John Coats; 5/9/1795, Sale of stray steer, John Coats; 8/7/1795, Suit McRa Cantey Co., vs. John Coats & John Patterson; 8/10/1795, suit, James Pierson vs. John Coats & James Gunn; 2/9/1796, Suit, Elizabth Scott vs. David & John Coats; and 2/7/1798, Petit Jury. Note that he appeared in the Kershaw Co. court in 1794 to prove the will of William Scott. John and Joseph were the witnesses to William Scott's will in 1779, when William Scott was of Craven Co., South Carolina. His adjoining land owners Joseph Coats and (his son?) John Coats were two of his witnesses. Since this John helped prove William Scott's will nearly 15 years after it was written, it appears they've moved from Craven Co., SC to Kershaw Co., SC at this point in time.... that or the land was redefined in Kershaw Co. that was formally Craven Co., South Carolina. This is a record that suggests that Joseph is the elder, and neighbor of William Scott in 1779 and John is likely to be a handy son to bring along to witness the will. John's age can be surmised from this 1779 will and John's census info. We know from census records that he was born between the ages of 1755 and 1774. However, to witness the will in 1779, he was likely born at least before 1763. John Coates is likely to be the John Coates in the 1800 Kershaw Co., SC census who was between ages 26-45. The oldest female in the household was between 16 and 26. Children included 2 sons and 3 daughters under age 10 and 3 from age 10-16. (C-2419) He lived between Armistad Hillard and Reuben Roberts.

  7. 13.  Davis COATSDavis COATS Descendancy chart to this point (6.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born after 1755; died after 1793 in Of Kershaw, SC.

    Notes:

It is theory on my part that Davis is a son of Joseph of Kershaw Co., South Carolina. Several of Joseph's sons moved from Orangeburgh Co., SC to Kershaw Co., South Carolina. This Davis Coats was on the Petit Jury in that county on 2/28/1792 and he was in a suit on 3/5/1793, Samuel Thompson vs. Thomas Kelly and Davis Coats. It should be noted that his name was hard to read and he could be the David Coats in the area instead.

  8. 14.  David COATSDavid COATS Descendancy chart to this point (6.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born before 1755 in Flat Rock, Kershaw, SC; died after 1820 in Of Kershaw, SC.

    Notes:

I have included David as a possible son of Rev. Joseph and likely brother to his son Joseph. In couple military records, David witnesses Joseph's military aid where he provided 5 bushels of corn and 10 bushels of oats to the militray in 1784 according to Joseph's pension application in 1796. It's filed in Charleston in 1796, but it doesn't state where Joseph or David were living at the time. (C-1708, 1952)

Since this is the family that has Joseph in it, I am assuming that David is a brother that belongs with this family. Other circumstantial evidence that supports this is the fact that David lives in Kershaw Co., SC like his possible brothers starting with 1800 census, and he is of correct age to be their brothers. He lives directly next to Lemuel Coates of the same age, another brother, in the 1820 census.

He might be the David who married Eunice Coppock and had daughter Lavinia Coats. He was born before 1755 and he is probably the David who was over 45 in the 1800 census and beyond for Kershaw Co. He had 3 males 10 and under, 1 male between 10 and 16, and 1 between 16 and 26. His wife was over age 45 and they had a daughter under 10, and one from ten to 16. In 1810, he and his wife appear to still be living. They have 1 son under age 10, and one between 16 and 26. They only have one daughter left under age 10, the eldest having moved out. In 1820, he appears to be the David Sr. listed. He and his wife are still living. Two males from 26-45 live in the household. There is a young male under age 10 (I'd guess that to be a grandson of David, Sr.). There is a female from age 26-45 and a female from 16 to 26 also living with them. He lived next door to Lemuel (over age 44) (likely brother) and James Coates (age 26-44) (Likely son of David). By 1830, David disappears. The ages of his children place him as this David and not his Uncle David who would have been nearing 70 in the 1800 census, making it highly unlikely that he would have 4 children under age 10 at that point in time.

Living within a few houses of this David, is a widow, Winney Coats, age 16-26 years living with a daughter under age 10. From location, this Winney could easily be his daughter-in-law.... through a deceased son.

David is listed as the son of William Coates Sr. of Dorchester Co., SC in Staples' book. However, because I'm only finding 1 David in the census records, I suggest that it's more likely that he is a brother to Joseph and a son of the Joseph of Orangeburgh Co., SC whose apparent sons moved to Kershaw Co., SC at points in their lifetime.

He is in the following Kershaw Co., Court records: 7/30/1792 on the Grand Jury; 3/2/1793, suit, David vs. John Harwell; 2/3/1793, suit, David Coats vs. John Harwell; 8/8/1794, Suit, David Coats vs. John Harwell; 8/7/1795, Grand Jury; and 2/9/1796, Grand Jury.

Family/Spouse: Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 24. James COATS  Descendancy chart to this point was born between 1776 and 1794; and died.

  9. 15.  Sion COATSSion COATS Descendancy chart to this point (6.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born in 1756 in , , VA; died on 11 Nov 1830 in Camden, Kershaw, SC.

    Notes:

According to Sion's children's census records, Sion was born in Virginia. This Sion is often listed as being born in 1742. However, the Sion in Kershaw Co. in the census records through 1820 is consistently given with a birth date of between 1756 and 1774, making him a generation older than is often stated. This is supported by the fact that he called for the education of his 3 youngest children (like their older siblings) in his will in 1830. If he had been born in 1742, he would be 88 and have youngsters in the house. That's not nearly as likely as if he was in his 60's. He, therefore, does not fit with the parents, etc, also stated for him. It is Beverly Burton's theory that he is the son of Joseph. That is the one verified person in the Orangeburgh area at the time that is the right age to be his father. He is in the Kershaw Co., SC census records as being the right age in the right place where his possible siblings lived. In the 1820 census, he lived within a dozen houses or so of his possible brothers, Joseph, Lemuel and David. Sion is in the following county court records in Kershaw Co., SC: 1785, purchases land in Camden District; 1790, Belton Vs. Sion Coats; 8/7/1794 Grand Jury; 1795, Witnesses James Perry's Deed; 5/7/1798, Appraiser of Estate of John Dixon; 8/9/1799 Grand Jury. In the 1820 census for Kershaw Co., SC, his household consists of 2 males under age 10, 1 between 10 and 15, and he is above age 45. There are 3 females under age 10, 1 from 10-15, and his wife is between the ages of 26 and 44. Note that one of the sons ages does not match his cemetery stone's birth date according to this census record. To me this suggests that son John's birthdate on his cemetery stone was a little too early and not accurately known. Sion is said to have married two Perry sisters, but according to thorough first hand research by James Fort of Canada, this isn't so. Sarah, sister to Mary Perry, married a Jesse Tillman instead. All that we know for certain at this point is that Sion's first wife was Mary Perry and his second wife was named Sarah with an unknown surname. It should also be noted, that some of his children attributed to him through his first wife, Mary Perry, are more likely children of his second wife by their ages. This is assuming that Mary died before 1801 as is indicated by various researchers. (C-2398, E) Sion and the Perry's are often connected in the records. Sion was a witness to several wills involving Perrys: James Perry of Kershaw Co., SC, Josiah Pery in 1812, James Perry Jr. and Benj. Perry. (C-1796, 1948, E) Sion lived near the Present Lancaster, Chester, York county lines in Flattop section on road that runs "from Liberty Hill to Camden". He is listed in a platt map dated 1826 in Kershaw County bounded by Benjamin and James Long's properties. He left a will in 1830 which was probated in 1832. He left land to all of his sons and many slaves to most all his sons and daughters. His estate must have been of some substance. His wife was named as Sarah. The named children in his will in the order of naming were sons: Sion, Gideon, John, and daughters: Betsey Coates, Jincey Revell, Mary Coates, Rebecca Coates, and Polly Flanigan. His will does not support the fact that he had a son James even though some have connected him with a son James. He provides for the education of his 3 youngest children to be equivalent to what all the rest of his children have been provided with, but does not state which ones they were. He states in his will that his wife Sarah may take care of "her children" as she sees best. This implies that Sarah might have children by another marriage. For some reason, there was a lawsuit about the probate of his estate. After it was settled, Sion, Gideon, Sarah and her infant son Josiah-? all moved to Alabama. (C-2200, 2201) Lastly, I suspect that Sion was married 3 times, first to Mary Perry who died before the 1800 census, 2nd to an Unknown person by whom he had 3 sons and two daughters and then finally Sarah named in his will by whom he had Josiah Coates in the late 1820's. However, this family still does not all fit. We know the sons' ages from cemetery stones, but two of them would have been born between 1800 and 1810. He only has one son listed as being born between those years... and two daughters. In the 1820, the years don't quite match up again. This family is therefore still a puzzlement.

Sion married Sarah BAYE after 1800. Sarah was born in 1775; died after 1830 in , Cherokee Co. (Now Etowah), AL, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  10. 16.  Robert COATSRobert COATS Descendancy chart to this point (6.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born before 1759; died after 1779 in Of Orange, SC, USA.

    Notes:

The only reason I have placed him in this family is that he is on the 1779 Orange Co. Tax lists, suggesting by time and place that he could be a son or brother to the Joseph Coates married to Elizbeth Ann Marr also of Orangeburg District.

Generation: 4

  1. 17.  Pollard Hickman COATSPollard Hickman COATS Descendancy chart to this point (10.Joseph3, 6.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born on 13 May 1794 in , , SC, USA; died on 5 Apr 1845 in , Holmes, MS.

    Notes:

Pollard and Emelia are listed as grandchildren in their grandfather, John Hickman's will. Pollard married Patsy Smith and had the following children: William Duval Coates, Wiley Burton Coates, Wyatt Rankin Coates, Seleta Caroline Coates, Winston Smith Coates, Warren Glover Coates, Waverly Pinckney Coates, and Wayne S. Coates. He has matching DNA to a Gabriel Garrett Coats, b. 1801 in SC and Daniel Coats, b. 1804 in North Carolina who also lived in South Carolina. Pollard Coates moved to Holmes Co., Mississippi before he married. He is in Pike County on the 1820 census. Pollard shows up in Mississippi about the same time as Elijah and Austin Coates, whom Robbie Landry theorizes are also related. They all came from the same place in South Carolina. The way I am theorizing the breakdown, is that Elijah is older than Pollard and a step-brother to Pollard. Elijah's son Austin would be Pollard's cousin if my theory is correct.

Pollard married Martha SMITH on 9 Jan 1816 in , Lawrence, Mississippi. Martha died in 1844. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 18.  Emelia COATSEmelia COATS Descendancy chart to this point (10.Joseph3, 6.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born before 1799; and died.

    Notes:

Daniel's DNA matches that of descendants of Pollard Coats of SC/MS and that of a Gabriel Coats of SC/North Carolina. Daniel moved onto Georgia and then Benton District, Alabama. He eventually settled in Titus Co., TX in 1860. It is Robbie Landry's theory that Daniel is a son of Joseph Jr. Coats.

Family/Spouse: Martha SMITH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 20.  Elijah COATSElijah COATS Descendancy chart to this point (10.Joseph3, 6.Joseph2, 1.Thomas1) was born in 1756; died after 1820 in Of Wilkinson, Missisippi?.

    Notes:

According to Robbie Landry's grandmother, this Coats branch originally spelled the name KOTZ. Elijah is thought to have been born in VA, lived in NC and then Barnwell in Orangeburg District, SC according to his descendants. The children I now have listed for him literally come from a journal belonging to Bernice Jones written by Thaddeus William Rawlins in 1898. It states that "Elenor Hicksman and Elijah Coates of South Carolina are the parents of Austin Coates, Rebecka Coates, Elizabeth 'Betsy' Coates and Mary Coates." Austin was his only apparent son. He eventually owned land that Elijah originally purchases.

Info on Elijah from Robbie Duroblan includes the following: "Deed - Barnswell SC - Deed from Elijah Coates and wife Elenor to William Barr, Book B, Page 324 dated aug 3,1801 , for 167 acres on South Edis to river , recorded 2 Jan 1806. (E) Elijah appears in the 1800 Census ,of Orange District., SC, with one male under 10 (Austin) and one 26-45 (Elijah) and 2 females under 10, (Rebecka and Mary) one 10-16 (Elizabeth) and one 25-26 (Elenor). A Sion Coates also, appears on this Census."

He and his wife are in the following deed recorded in 1801 and transcribed by Justin M. Sanders. "State of South Carolina}Barnwell district} Know all men [by] these presents that I Elijah Coates of the [St]ate and District afforsaid for and in con[sid]eration of the sum of fifteen pounds Sterling Money to me in hand paid by William Bars at and before the sealing [and] Delivery of these presents have granted bargained and sold and released and by these presents do grant bargain sell and release unto the said William Barr all that pl[an]tation or tract of land containing one h[un]dred and sixty seven acres more or less [situ]ate in the state and district above mentio[ned] on baygald branch water of South Edis[to] River and is that same land which was Granted to Elendor Hickman the now wife of sd. He is likely to be the Elijah in the following bill of sale. "Sale of a Slave in Louisiana. Document Date 2/16/1811, Document Number 246, Notary Lynd, Date of Sale, 2/16/1811; Depository housed in parish courthouses. Location Orleans (including hapitoulas). Language of this record English, Seller Elijah Coates, Buyer Ralph Moorehouse, Name Hagar, Name Type Partilly coded, overwhelmingly European, Gender female, Race black, Age 34, sold or inventoried as an individual, Currency Type U.S. dollar = 1 p, Value of Sale 300, Sale Common Price 300, Where slave came from - Mississippi, Comments Seller is from Miss. " He lived in Wilkinson Co., Miss. by 1811 as verified by the following records sent by Robbie Griggs Landry: "Court records show Elijah Coates in Mississippi Territory by 1811 (Elijah Coates Juror), Residents of the Mississippi Territory, Miscellaneous Book 2 A Edward Randolph Vs. Samuel Davis 1811 page 68 by Jean Strickland and Patricia N. Edwards (1995)" and "Wilkinson County Jury Edward Randolph VS. Samuel Davis 1811 Book 2A pg. 68 Residents of the Mississippi Territory South Carolina. by Jean Strickland and Patricia N. Edwards (Elijah Coats is a jury man)".

After this point conflicting records appear. 1813 Taxes for Wilkinson County, Mississippi list Elijah Coats owning 80 acres on Buffaloe Creek.... but at least one record after this shows him on the tax lists in Barnwell, SC owning 200+acres of land. He is likely to be the Elijah Coates who was living in Wilkinson Co., Mississippi in th 1816 census.

In the 1820 census for Mississippi, Elijah Coates is listed in the Territorial Census with 2 white males over 21, 0 white males under 2, 2 white females over 21, 1 white female under21; 5 total white; 0 free colored; and 1 slave, total of 6 in his household. Robbie Landry transcribed the following record from Louisiana IBERVILLE PARISH RECORDS - VOL 3 - compiled and edited by Judy Riffel Le Comite'des Archives de la Louisiane Baton Rouge,LA Page 159 Reel IV 5.1"July 5, 1820 - Elijah Coates (s/o Elijah Cates) Bond to celebrate Marriages (2) Index Elijah Coates same page 159"

At this point in time I'm not sure which Elijah Coates this would refer too unless Elijah and Eleanor Hickman also had a son named Elijah that we have not yet verified from another source. We might want to be looking in Baton Rouge, LA for descendants of this Elijah Coates and Eleanor Hickman.

Elijah married Elenor HICKMAN before 1794. Elenor (daughter of John HICKMAN and Elizabeth BRIGHT) was born before 1766; died after 1806 in Of Barnwell, Orangeburg, SC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

William and his brother Elijah are the first to move to the Mississippi territory in their family. They paid taxes in Clarke Co., Mississippi in 1812. Brother Sion L. follows when the Indian territory opens up. This is the best evidence we have so far that these 3 men are brothers. William and Elijah Coats paid taxes on land in Clarke Co., Mississippi in 1813 and William again in 1816. In this 1816 census, William's household consists of one white male over 21, 2 white males under 21 and a white female over 21. Elijah had moved to Wilkinson County, Mississippi by then according to census records.

    Notes:

Sion L. lived in Orangeburgh District, South Carolina. Researcher, Beverly Burton, theorizes that this Sion is the son of Joseph of Orangeburg District, South Carolina. Many others currently have him connected as the son of Sion and Mary Perry Coates of Kershaw Co., SC, but Beverly has with census info determined that Sion and Mary Perry were too young to be the parents of this Sion. Basically, her thinking is as follows: "We know from the 1850 Lauderdale census that he was born in 1770 and that fits with all of the Sions from Orangeburg censuses -- which vary from the Sion from Kershaw censuses. Then, if you go and look back at the Orangeburg 1810 and 1820 censuses, you'll see most of his married children's families -- which he named in his 1854 will -- (are) listed on the same page with him."

In 1835, he and many of his children moved to Lauderdale Co., MS. Some branches of this family moved to Texas in 1855. (C-2270E)Sion was married at least twice with widow Nancy Foster being his final wife near his death. The mother of his children is unknown at this time. There is another younger Sion that shows up in the 1800 census, which I expect to be a son or nephew of this Sion. He was living in Orange Co., SC in 1800 on page 309 of the census. He was between the ages of 16 and 26 as was his wife. They had 1 son between the ages of 10 and 16 and 3 daughters ages ten and under. (Tables)There is a deed record for Sion Coats in this county that could apply to either of these Sions or to Sion L's son Sion. Notes:

It is theory on my part that James is the son of Lemuel Coates. He lives next to him and 2 houses from David Coates in the 1820 census for Kershaw Co., South Carolina. It is possible that he is the son of David, Sion, Joseph or Harwell Coates instead as they also are Coates families in the area. In any case, in the 1820 census for Kershaw, he also has one son between the ages of 10-15, 1 daughter under age 10, and a wife between the ages of 26 and 44 like himself. There is a James Coats living in Frederick Co., VA in the 1840 census between the age of 70-80 who might be him.

    Notes:

Sion and family supposedly settled in Coates Bend, Cherokee Co., Alabama along with a family named Harbour about 1729 according to a history of that county. It is more likely that they settled there in 1730 after Sion's father died. He is considered the progenitor of the Coate's/Harbour branch in that area. They were listed from Kershaw Co., South Carolina. According to 1840 & 1850 Cherokee censuses, this Sion, Jr. was b. in 1805 in SC which matches Sion's Kershaw Co., SC censuses.

    Notes:

John and brother Gideon moved to Cherokee Co., Alabama after their father's death. They are often confused with persons of the same name who are likely their relatives buried in Missouri. It is also highly likely that the info on the Sions in SC is confused between at least a second set of Sions also in that region. There is a second set of brothers named Sion (1807-1856) and Gideon E. Coats (Jun24 1811-1884) that are buried within 2 miles of each other in Etowah Co., AL (was then Cherokee Co.) whose stepmother Sarah Perry was said to have moved from SC with them. (C-1992)

    Notes:

According to 1840 & 1850 Cherokee censuses, this Gideon was b. in 1811 in South Carolina. This matches Sion's Kershaw censuses. He and his brother John are buried within 2 miles of each other in what is now Etowah Co., AL. They moved there with their stepmother or possibly Gideon's wife, Sarah, after their father died.
