  1. 1.  John COLE, Sr.John COLE, Sr. was born before 1755; died before 2 Jan 1809 in , Newberry, SC.

    Notes:

According to the "Annals of Newberry", the Coles settled in a Baptist settlement on Bush River and Little River. John Cole, Sr was the Third Pastor of the Bush River Church where he served for 35 years. He "died full of years and pious uesfulness, in 1816." {The Annals of Newberry page 144} John Sr. in the 1800 census is listed on page 72 along with a John (Jr.) in Newberry Co., South Carolina. Sr. was over age 45 along with his wife. They had 1 son living with them between the ages of 16 and 26 and 9 slaves. I have estimated that they were married before 1768 from having one son left at least age 16 and having at least 8 children mentioned in his will. That gives an approximation of having their first child about 32 years previous to 1800. He left an extensive will in 1808 in Newberry Co., SC where he names children and grandchildren. When he mentions his grandchildren by son William, he also gives a share to his daughter-in-law, Rachel who has remarried a Providence Williams. "One share to son Wm. Cole's Children when they reach 18 yrs. To Rachel Williams 5 shillings." It should be noted that one of his grandchildren, Katy Cole, does not have the t crossed in her name. This is a note in case the same misspelling was used for the name Cole (Cote?) throughout the document. (C-2052) His wife, Mary, could still be living in 1829 when she deeds land. It should be noted that the index to his estate papers lists him as John Cote. It has been conjectured that the Coles were Cotes in the area, and this estate is one example leading to that conclusion.
The following is information shared by a Cole researcher named Dobie, from the email address: Obie01@aol.com. "South Carolina Baptists 1670-1805 by Townsend; John Cole Sr licensed in 1787 and ordained in 1783 by Rev. Messrs. Joseph Burson and John Webb of Fair Forest at the church that came to be known as Coles Meeting House. William Cole was also ordained during this time. He died March 1802.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Mary COLEMary COLE Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) was born about 1765; and died.

    Notes:

Mary Cole received her siblings share of her father's estate, $534.58. She was married to William Reeder who also received a full share of her father's estate. She and her husband were the only couple that both received shares though. She was likely born circa 1765 or earlier if her son, James Reeder's birth date of 1778 is correct. I've also seen his birth date on the same day in the year 1788 so I'm not sure which is correct. (C-2024, 2067, E)

Mary married William REEDER before 1778. William was born about 1765 in , Loudoun, VA, USA; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 12. James REEDER  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 4 Mar 1778 in , , SC, USA; died on 30 Oct 1858 in , Newberry, SC, USA; was buried in Bush River Baptist Cemetery, Newberry, SC, USA.

  2. 3.  William Jesse COLEWilliam Jesse COLE Descendancy chart to this point (1.John1) was born in 1769 in , Newberry, SC; died after 23 Mar 1802 in , Newberry, SC, USA.

    Notes:

William Cole is in the 1800 census in Newberry Co., SC on pg. 70. He is listed at between the ages of 26 and 45 along with his wife of the same age. The males in the household included 2 under age 10, 1 from 10-16, and 1 from 16-26. The females included 1 under age 10. There were also 5 slaves. (C-1870) William Cole sells 60 acres of land to James Cole on Mar. 23, 1802 that was originally granted to John Cole Sr. on Mar. 23, 1802. This John Cole Sr. is likely to be his brother or father. John Sr. was still living when William sold the land as he witnessed the document. William is listed in Bush River Baptist Church records, appointed a minister shortly before his death. (C-1860-1861)

John Sr. in the 1800 census is listed on page 72 along with a John (Jr.) in Newberry Co., South Carolina. Sr. was over age 45 along with his wife. They had 1 son living with them between the ages of 16 and 26 and 9 slaves. John (Jr.) was the same age as William between the ages of 26 and 45 with a wife the same age. Their household included 3 sons under age 11, 1 from 10-16, and females: 1 under age 11, and 1 from 10-16. These statistics suggest to me that John Sr. is the father of both William and John Jr. and obviously outlives his son William. (C-1870)

I have included this family in my database as there is a chance that this spelling is a variant of Cote, and this could be the missing William and Rachel Ann Budd Coate that by family tradition, is in the area. However, if this is where the William and Rachel came from, they are much younger than previously believed, b. aft 1755. They obviously could not be the parents of Thomas or possibly Reverend William Coats as previously conjectured. It is most likely that they are truly Coles and not related to the Cotes family after all.

I transcribed his difficult to read will below. Notes:

Betsy is likely deceased by 1808 as her husband does not receive a share of her father's estate in that year, only her children do. The other explanation is that they've received their share already. Some of her children are still called minors and their share is given to Newman and James Gary to handle.

Generation: 3

  1. 12.  James REEDERJames REEDER Descendancy chart to this point (2.Mary2, 1.John1) was born on 4 Mar 1778 in , , SC, USA; died on 30 Oct 1858 in , Newberry, SC, USA; was buried in Bush River Baptist Cemetery, Newberry, SC, USA.

    Notes:

I've seen James Reeder's birth date listed the exact same day in 1778 and 1788. I believe the 1778 one is much more likely to be correct as in the 1850 census, he is living with his wife, Mary, in Newberry Co., SC at age 70, a farmer. She is listed at age 65. James is likely the James Reeder who is mentioned in the administration of John Cole, Sr.'s will on Jan 2, 1809. (C-2274) James Reeder was one of the persons making purchases at William Griffin's estate sale in 1826 in Newberry. Other purchasers included Samuel Coate and a (James?) Wilson, possible brother-in-law. Samuel (Father-in-law of this James Reeder) died in 1807, so this Samuel is likely to be the younger one in the area who joined the Bush River Baptist Church in the 1820's and was dismissed from it in 1827. It is not known how the two Samuel's connect, but it is possible the younger one is the son who appears in the 1800 census records for Samuel (Sr.).

Family/Spouse: Mary COATE. Mary (daughter of Samuel COATES and Mary WORTHINGTON) was born about 1785 in , , South Carolina; died on 18 Nov 1868 in , Newberry, SC; was buried in Bush River Baptist Cemetery, Newberry, SC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 29. Samuel REEDER  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1803; and died.

  2. 13.  James COLEJames COLE Descendancy chart to this point (3.William2, 1.John1) was born before 1784; died after Jun 1802.

    Notes:

James is listed as son James Cole in his father's administration in 1802. He and his mother, Rachel, were both executors. There is also a John Cole who helped do the inventory of the estate who is a likely brother.

  3. 14.  Gabriel COLEGabriel COLE Descendancy chart to this point (4.James2, 1.John1) was born in 1795; died in 1839.

    Notes:

Gabriel filed receipts to recover supplies that he had taken by wagon for use inthe "Battle of Bexar". The division reached G.Cole's place on the Sam Bernard at mid-day and Santa Ana rested his troops there. On April 10th, their march resumed after they confiscated 20 barrels of sugar and 12 hundred twenty five bushels of corn. (History of Texas by J.H. Brown at Fort Bend County Library. Excerpt from Almonte's diary) " Saturday, April 9 [1836]. at 5 A.M. we left San Felipe with the choice companies of Guerro, Matamoros, Mexico and Toluca with fifty cavalry of the Tampico regiment. At half past 12 we arrived at Coll's [Cole's] farm six and one-half leagues [from San Felipe]. Three Americans were seen who took the road to Marion [Columbia] or Orizimbo [Old Fort] and leading to Thompson's Ferry. We found at the farm a family from Lavaca who came by way of the Brazos. Various articles were also found. The husband of the woman was a mulatto, the woman was white. We sent Wilson, the husband, to reconnoiter at Marion, that is the ferry. He did not return. It rained at night and the wind blew from the north." In the "History of Fort Bend County, Texas" by Clarence Wharton, c1939 Tx State Archives" the following information is available according to Dobie, a researcher in this line. "In those days the road from Columbia to San Felipe did not follow the meanders of the Brazos but passed Damons Mound and Mrs. Powell place on Turkey Creek about a mile from the Bernard, thence up by Gabriel Cole's across the prairie and on to San Felipe." page 72, Chapter VI Settlements on the Bernard pg 64........Only two permanent locations were made by the Three Hundred on the Bernard in Fort Bend county-James Beard, the saddle maker, cook on the schooner "Lively", and James Scott. The other Bernard locations from Gabriel Cole down to James where the south line of the County leaves the Bernard for the Brazos came later. At the time of the Revolution there was a solid tier of Mexican grantson both sides of the Bernard. Gabriel Cole whose survey lies in the Big Bend of the Bernard at the most north and westerly corner of the county, came from Maine [this is in error, should be South Carolina] in 1832 and got his grant that year. In 1835 he joined the patriot army at Gonzales and was at the siege of Bexar in December. In the following March when Santa Anna's Army was on its way to the Brazos ,Gabriel took his family and fled with the runaways. Later we shall see that his humble homestead on the Bernard was the camp site for the Mexican army on its way to the Jesse Thompson Ferry on the Brazos in April. After the Revolution he continued to live on his land until his death in 1846.[Cole probably lived on the Charles Baird Survey at this time. See Act of Congress. 1839, Vol 3, pg 40] Below Gabe Cole's, Andrew Northington from Kentucky came with his family." In the "History of Fort Bend County.......pg 87 "The act creating the County [Fort Bend] and fixing its boundaries was passed 29 December 1837. On the east side of the Brazos the County line began at Bigham's upper line and followed the old line between Harrisburg and Brazoria for three leagues, when it took a tangent to the north to a low elm at the head of Bray's Bayou. by various turns the upper lines returned to the Brazos along the south line of Churchill Fulshear's league leaving the old sailor outside the County Boundaries. Crossing the river here it went up the west bank ten or more miles to the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek and thence over to the Bernard at Gabriel Cole's corner. The Bernard formed the West boundary down to the southeast corner league 8 and from there in a direct line to the south prong of Cow Creek which followed to the Brazos, reaching the river ten or more miles farther down than the starting point at Bigham's."
