3. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Samuel saw his father murdered by the Tories during the Revolutionary War and then ravage the house. He had to bury his father in his own shirt, afterwhich he enlisted in the war serving till it's end. He married at Newberry and then moved to Miami Co., Ohio according to "The Annals of Newberry". He became a Quaker (at marriage???) and was one in the strictest sense of the word. (C-296) Samuel married Rebecca FURNAS in Mar 1783. 4. | ![]() ![]() Notes: A letter written by Thomas Brooks Johnson, Feb. 18, 1833 from Eddy Grove, Caldwell Co., KY when he was 18 to his Uncle and Aunt, presumably Betsey Johnson Moore of Paris, TN states "Grandfather Brooks (Thomas) died last fall, was a year or about a year ago, and Grandmother (Susannah Teague Brooks) is very low." Thomas Brooks is said to have died in 1831. According to this letter, Susannah Teague Brooks would still be living in 1833 in Eddy Grove, KY. Another old letter in descendants from this family transcribes the following old Johnson bible. "In Uncle Davi (?) old Bible I find" and she goes on to list the names of the "Children of Thomas and Susannah Brooks." Tabitha was born May the 4th (74?), Mary was born January 31st 17(?), Thomas was born May the 6th 17(?), Elijah was born Feb. 15th 1782, Jesse was born Sept 23rd, David was born Jun. 25th 1787, Mary was born Feb. 16th 1789, Elizabeth was born Oct 22 1794, Susannah was born Oct 22 1794, Rebechah was born Oct 21 98, "The dates are so moth-eaten and worn away I can not make them out." This last quote was from Mary Beard Smith Johnson to her mother-in-law, Susannah Johnson. Susanna married Thomas BROOKS before 1778. Thomas died in 1831. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

7. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Luranah is named in her sister Rebecca Teague Jay's will written on Mar. 16, 1847 in Miami County Courthouse records. Someone has mistakenly written over the spelling of Luranah to be Susanah but this is in error. All the persons in the will match Rebecca Teague Jay's sisters and family. She is also what looks like "Susana" Coats in the 1840 census for Newton Twp. Sons Joshua, Thomas and daughters Mary and Esther fit perfectly by age and place in this census household record. That census record has mistakenly been attributed to Susana Brock Coats in my opionion. It does not match the township she lived in nor the ages of her children. In 1860, she is living with her son, Thomas Elwood in Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. Luranah married James COATE on 28 Oct 1807. James (son of Marmaduke COATE and Mary Jane COPPOCK) was born on 23 Jun 1777 in Bush River M.M., Newberry, SC, USA; died on 5 Dec 1839 in Newton Twp., Miami, OH, USA; was buried in Ludlow Falls, Miami County, Ohio, United States of America. 10. | ![]() ![]() Notes: One Teague researcher states that Joseph and his brother Furnas were both born and died in 1796. I'm assuming that meant they were twins, but as you can tell, this greatly differs from info on my other sources. |

13. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Tansing in a manuscript states that James Coate's (son of Marmaduke and Mary Coppock) first wife was Susannah Teague. They supposedly married on Apr 28, 1807 in Miami Co. However, other sources give Mary Miles as James's first wife and the Tansing source is riddled with many errors. (C-1519j) Family/Spouse: Samuel STEDDOM. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

17. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Eli Jay in the Centenial History of West Branch states that Jonathan married Martha Compton on Jun 20, 1860 instead of the wife listed here. This Jonathan is likely the Jonathan Coates who was an operator on the underground railroad in Miami Co., OH along with his brother Joshua. His death certificate in Miami Co., Ohio gives his death date as May 1, 1872. His bible gives his death date as May 5, 1872 and his tombstone gives it as May 6, 1872. He died of typhoid fever and his doctor appears to have submitted his death information along with many others. Therefore, I suspect that the familiy placed stone or bible are more accurate. (C-1546) Jonathan married Martha COMPTON on 21 Jun 1860 in West Branch M.M., Miami, OH, USA. Martha was born about 1825 in , , OH, USA; died after 1860 in , Miami, OH, USA. 23. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Eli Jay's [BO:Centenial History of West Branch:BO] lists Joseph's name as Joseph Coate, son of John and Esther Teague Coate, b. Nov 1, 1810. He also signs his name as Joseph T. Coate in a marriage record for a Hunnicut as a witness. His wife Agnes signs as a witness in 1842 as Agnes Coate. It is said by some sources that he was the son of Esther Coate before she married John Coate. Obviously, John Coate adopted him if he was not already John's son. (C-1546) In the 1880 census, Joseph lists both of his parents birthplace as South Carolina. Joseph married Agnes BANGHAM on 20 Apr 1832 in Dover M.M., Clinton, OH, USA. Agnes (daughter of Benjamin BANGHAM and Lucy UNKNOWN) was born about 1818 in , , OH, USA; died after 1880 in Of Adam Twp., Clinton, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

They proceeded to move to Ceasar's Monthly Meeting on 5/18/1838. Elijah and Rebecca were Quakers who converted to Methodism after the Civil War when "swept up in the Evangelical Revival". Elijah help set up many Methodist churches throughout the midwest. Letters to his wife during this time period are still in existence. He is likely the Elijah Coate who was an operator on the Underground Railroad in Miami Co., Ohio. (C-2117) Elijah married Rebecca COPPOCK on 27 Jun 1832 in Union M.M., Miami, OH, USA.
