She is listed as a Wood in family records and as a Donathan in court records, so which is her maiden name is not clear. She is listed as Rachel Wood Donathan in her marriage to Bartholomew indicating that she was probably married to a Donathan before Bart.

My theory is that she is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Wood and sister to Jeremiah Wood. Both she (as Rachel Gaskins) and Jeremiah Wood are named in the will of Reubin Dolard on Jan 8, 1802 in Bedford Co., Virginia. Reubin Dolard was the same person that provided surety when she married indicating some close relationship between them, possibly uncle or grandparent. She is not named in her possible father, Thomas Wood's will written on Nov. 26, 1773 other than the fact that he alluded to his children in general. The will was not probated until Feb. 25, 1793, a few months before she married. She did name her oldest child, Thomas, again suggesting this is a likely match for the Bedford Co., Virginia area where they all lived. (Hinshaw, V.VI, CL-553, 554)

Reuben Gaskins was on the 1827 Tax lists for Gallia Co., OH, not for owning land but for his chattel. He lived in Raccoon Twp. He paid taxes on Chattel for 1 cattle in Raccoon Twp. in 1818 and on 2 cattle in Gallipolis in 1824 and 2 cattle in Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., OH in 1825. He is missing from the 1822, 1823, 1826 and 1828 Tax lists, whatever that means.

He owns land adjacent to his father, Bartholomew, in Raccoon Twp., Rio Grande, Ohio as provided on a plat map by Warren Lawrence. (CL-495) He is within 3 houses of his father's in the 1830 census, p. 153, Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio He was age 30 to 40. His wife was from 20 to 30 years of age. They had one son under age 5, 1 from 5-10, and 1 daughter from age 5-10. In the 1840 census in Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., OH, they have one son under age 5, 1 from 5-10, 1 from 10-15, and he was 40-50. Females in the household include 2 under age 5, 2 from 5-10, 1 from 10-15 and 1 from 30-40. In the 1850 census, Reuben was 59, b. VA, wife Julia was 48, b. There were also two Thomas Gaskins in Clermont Co., one who was anywhere from a year to 20 years older than the other who might be confused with our Thomas Gaskins, son of Bartholomew of Gallia Co., Ohio The elder one died by Nov. 1852 as his estate was probated at that time in Clermont Co., Ohio (CL-500, 502) Thomas settled permanently in northwestern Pierce (Clermont Co. OH) then called Pleasant Hill around 1818. His children included Dr. Cyrus, Dr. John, William of Williamsville, Clermont Co., OH and Sylvester of Indiana, Jane, Hettie and Susan. The "History of Clermont County" states that he was a "practical farmer ..and.. an ardant Jacksonian Democrat." He was in the 1820 census for Clermont Co., OH, p. 26 with he and his wife between the ages 16 and 26, 1 son under age 10, 2 daughters under age ten, and he was employed in agriculture. He is in the 1830 census for Ohio Twp., Clermont Co., OH, page 218, between 30 and 40 years of age with a wife in the same age bracket, 2 sons under age 5, 1 under age 10, 1 from 10-15, 1 daughter under age 5, 1 under age 10 and 2 from 10-15. In the 1820 census, there is only one family that had a daughter her age. This Baten/Bartholomew Gaskins lived in Raccoon Twp, and had 2 sons under 10, 2 under 16, 2 under 26, with 1 daughter of five and under ten (likely Sarah), 1 under 16, 1 between 26 and 45. He and his wife were above age 45. Their marriage date is in Gallia Co., records and her age is calculated from her age in the Federal Census records for Gallia Co., Ohio. If the census records are correct, she was at most age 12 when they married. His actual names from other records was Bartholomew Adam Gaskins. Sarah and her husband named a son after him, Bartholomew Adam Danner. There is another younger Sarah A. Gaskins, b. in 1837 who was living with Uriah Rose and Elizabeth Gaskins Rose in the 1850 census. She is probably Elizabeth's sister and likely granddaughter of Baten Gaskins, niece to this Sarah A. by age and place. Warren Lawrence theorizes that the younger Sarah A. is a daughter of Baten's son Reuben Gaskins.(C-513)

I have corresponded with a Gaskin in Western Australia. Her ancestors went to Australia in 1874 from England. She believes the name originated in France. (CL-309) Another correspondent with Gaskins in his ancestry states the Gaskins he has were from England and before that from Ireland. (CL-423)

James served in the Civil War in the 173rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company C. He enlisted on Aug 15, 1864 at Centerville, Gallia Co, Ohio. He mustered into the service with the regiment of Sep 17 of that year. Within 3 months, by Dec. 23, 1864 he fell ill and was placed in the U.S. Army General Hospital Number 2 in Nashville, TN. He died in Tennessee on Jan. 21, 1865 from complications of Typhoid fever. He is buried in Nashville National Cemetery where a correspondent, Major Richard Blanton has seen his grave. E or H which formed in Columbus, Ohio (CL-89,444, 445) There is a possibility that his birth date is miscalculated and that he married Margaret Gillen on Oct. 31, 1861. Abraham J. Daner married Eliza J. Rusk on Nov. 29, 1865 at the bride's home according to a book of birth, marriage and death records for Gallia Co., Ohio. Abraham (Frank?) and Elizabeth Rusk had a son William Baxter and one daughter, Ellen S. Abraham is in the 1850 census (1 yr) with his father Jacob and mother Sarah and on the 1860 Census as 15 and is missing from the 1870 census. His wife and children, Elizabeth, William, then 3 and Ellen who is 1, are in the 1870 census living with or near her parents Samuel and Ellen Rusk in Addison Twp. Gallia, Ohio. In the 1880 census, William and Ellen are living with their grandfather Jacob in Raccoon Twp, Gallia Co., Ohio. Abraham likely is the one that served in the Civil War from March 8 1865 to Aug 24, 1865. Descendants of this line lived in Galion, Crawford Co., Ohio.

Lola owned property adjoining what use to be property of her husbands in section 34 of Raccoon Township in 1900. Other divisions of section 34 belonged to all of her brothers and sisters except for Sonora. As she received her father's farm from her father, this could be that same property. (CL-12,142) Lola Tobin Clark made many quilts. She specifically gave one of the "Grandmother's Flower Garden" patterned quilt to her granddaughter Wanda as she was the oldest daughter in that side of the family. She asked her to give it to her oldest daughter. Her daughter Grace Ann still has it in safe keeping. (CL-290) Her birth date and mother's maiden name appear to be incorrect on her death certificate as 10/16/1862 d. of Mary Gaskins. The info was provided by her son, William E. Clark, but neither piece of info correlates with any other document found on her. Her death certificate stated that she was a housekeeper in her own home for 50 years. The last date of her occupation at this task was in 1935, five years before her death. She died of Cardio Vascular Reval Disease. (CL-DOC)
