1. 1. Lady Mary YOUNGLady Mary YOUNG was born in 1611 in In Castle Auldbar, Angus, Fife, Scotland; died on 16 Sep 1690 in Antrim Parish, Antrim, Northern Ireland.

    Notes:

Mary Young was from the Clan Young of Audbar, or Dunbar, Castle Toward. This is the region where much of the massacre occurred in which her husband was killed. She escaped taking 4 sons with her to live in co. Antrim, Ireland for the rest of her life. (CL-541)

Lady married Sir John LAMONT (CLAN OF) before 1640 in Auchinhove, Ayr, Scotland. Notes:

According to the Lamont-Young DNA research project, Andrew was born in 1646 in Danoon, Scotland. Andrew was born a Lamont. When his father and all of the adult male Lamont's were taken prisoner, torchured and killed, his mother escaped with 4 young sons going to Ireland. Each son took a different surname to stay safe. This Andrew's descendants YDNA does match other Lamont descendants adding substance to this history of Ireland. Since I have many DNA autosomal triangulations with descendants of this Andrew Young and Mary Adair, it supports my James Young descending from this Andrew Young.

Andrew was likely to have had many other children. Persons of the same surname and similar age to his likely son John in the Carmony Church Records in co. Antrim were: Robert, Matthew and Charles. He and his brother John (Lamont) Stitlington, farmed and were linen manufacturers on the Larne River in Antrim Co., North Ireland.

His home built in the 1700's is beautifully restored and lived in in the townland of Ballygowan, Parish of Raloo, Antrim Co., Northern Ireland. A photo of his home can be found at http://www.lamont-young.com/showphoto.php?photoID=8
    person ID= ;tree=; ordernum=1; page=1.

According to an attorney/genealogist, son John never came to the U.S. He also died intestate and had a brother James (closest Kin) administer his estate. This tells us that John had no children living after his death. In other words, persons in the U.S. descended from Andrew, descended from other children of Andrew Lamont and Mary Adair.

Andrew married Mary ADAIR after 1665 in , Antrim, Ulster, Northern Ireland. Mary was born in 1646 in Bally Clair, Antrim, Northern Ireland; died on 15 Feb 1750 in Antrim, Antrim, Northern Ireland (Aged 70). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

He is likely the oldest Young in Cecil Co., MD in 1720 when he is asked to preach and see if enough Presbyterians have moved into the region to have minister established there. The fact that he was asked to do this and has the title of Mr. indicates age and land holdings.

An attorney, Janice McAlpine, pointed out that all of the Youngs of Beverly Manor and Naked Creek cannot be the sons of John who died in 1747 as his closest next of kin is listed as his brother, James. What this suggests to me is that we descend through James instead as we have triangulations representing John Lamont Young and his wife Annie.

With new evidence and understanding from Attorney Janice McAlpine, I do not believe that this John ever came to the American colonies. Most of what has been attributed to him in the colonies actually was about his likely children. His stated son's John and James owned land in Augusta County by 1738 and appear to be the earliest Youngs in the records. Robert's family came by 1740. Hugh followed in 1740/1741 according to Hugh's son John's testimony when he was 81 in 1818.

We now know for certain that John and James of Back Creek in the Beverly Patent of Augusta Co., Virginia was not the John married to Annie Houston. It took a lawyer and descendant, Janice McAlpine to discern this. It was assumed that the early John and James C. Young on Back Creek was the John married to Annie and his brother James from Ireland. However, John died intestate (without leaving a will) in 1747. His named brother James Young was the court appointed administrator of the estate rather than the executor of a will. Multiple things are significant here. The John who died in 1747 had no descendants or heirs. We know this because his brother James was referred to as "his nearest heir" in the records. Attorney Janice McAlpine points out that by law, a brother could only be an heir if the deceased had no living descendants.

The second significant point here is since John who died in 1747 left no children then he was not John Young who married Annie Houston in Ireland and left a number of sons and daughters.

Thirdly, it means that we also do not have proof that John married to Annie has a brother James that I have seen other than the misinterpretation of the administration of John who died in 1747 in Augusta Co., Virginia.
Let this last paragraph sink in. It has far reaching effect on how we have interpreted the data up to 2010.

One more clear pattern needs to be noted about this family. The following persons interact in the land, road and court records from Beverly and the Borden Platts which suggests they are siblings: John, James C., Hugh, Robert and Nancy. Sarah, often attributed to this group of siblings, lived on Naked Creek with her husband and all interactions in her and her son Robert's family occur with Youngs in the Naked Creek area. In other words, she might not be the sibling of John Young.

Even so, DNA evidence indicates that my Sarah Young is descended from John and Annie Houston's ancestral tree. I have 9 triangulations between 5 persons who descend from John and Annie Houston Young between 5.2 and 6.6 cM's with my Mother's DNA. She was born in 1916 helping us to get these. These are on chromosome 15 from 29,000,000-31,000,000. We don't know how the Naked Creek group ties in to John and Annie Houston Young, but we know they do.

    Notes:

He and his wife (a cousin of his) immigrated to America in 1740/1741 according to his son Johns' testimony in court when he was 81 years of age. In 1742, he and his brothers can be found in the muster lists for Augusta Co., Virginia. Chaukley, V.II, pg 509, "Capt. John Willson's Lists: John Wilson, Captain; Sam Calehison, Nathan Lusk, John Shields, John Greer, John Patterson, George Davison. John Hunter, Wm. Hunter, James Hunter, John Rusk, James Clark, Wm. He lived near his brother, Robert, in Augusta Co., VA where they lived out the rest of their lives. He received a patent for his 586 acres of land in Beverley Manor (later to become Augusta Co., VA) in 1746, three years before he and his brothers all bought land on Feb. 28, 1749. He acquired 200 acres on that day in Beverley Manor. He is the Hugh Young in the following Chalkley record, "Page 109.--15th February, 1748. Jane Cook's bond as administratrix of Patrick Cook, with sureties Hugh Young, Robt. Young, John Spear... Page 55.--15th May, 1754. Hugh Young's bond as guardian (appointed) to Mary and John Cook, orphans of Patrick Cook, with sureties Robert Patterson, William Hamilton. Jane was his sister." Martin, Robert Campbell, David Campbell, James Lockhart, David Cunningham, Alex. Campbell, Patrick Cook, Patrick Martin." We do know that Hugh had at least 3 children from records in Chaukley. Their son Thomas was killed as a teenager at the Battle of Kerr's Creek. Their daughter, Mary, married John Cartmill. Their son John was an aid to General Washington and was an ancestor to our current day Senator, John McCain.

However, Hugh and brother James did not leave wills, so in reality, we do not know how many children either Hugh or James had. We do know that Hugh was sued by William Dean, the husband of Mary Cooke, the only child of Patrick Cooke in 1763. He was her guardian and Uncle. This case was concluded in 1765.

The early William in the area that had children starting in 1763 could be the son of this Hugh or his brother James C. 7. 27. John YoungJohn Young Descendancy chart to this point (16.John3, 5.Andrew2, 1.Lady1) was born in 1701 in Antrim, Antrim, Ireland; died in Mar. 1747 in Beverly Manor, Augusta, VA.

    Notes:

John Young died shortly before 17 March 1747, the date of his estate appraisal. Bits and pieces of the estate documents were abstracted in Chalkley's I and III. They show that John's brother, James Young, was granted administration of John's estate on 17 June 1747. As far as I can tell, James Young of Whistle Creek was the only James Young in Augusta Co. of the same generation as John was. I have not found any records for a mysterious "second" James Young in the area during the 1740s. There are no deeds, no road orders and no court records.

We know from the estate records that John died intestate -- without a will -- because James Young was the court appointed administrator of the estate rather than the executor of a will. We also know that John died without descendants because his brother James was referred to as "his nearest heir." By law, a brother could only be an heir if the deceased had no living descendants. At a minimum, this means that John Young who died in 1747 was not John Young who married Annie Houston in Ireland and left a number of sons. One rather clumsy abstract in Chalkley's has led Young researchers to say that both John Young and James Young were dead before 17 March 1747, however that is not the case.

Records clearly show that John's brother James was granted administration of the estate on 17 June 1747 and that he handled the estate until its close in March 1749. Robert Young was a surety for James Young as administrator and Hugh Young was mentioned in the 1749 estate distribution. See the following records:

*Chalkley's I, page 431: "Young's appraisement. James Young and John Young, deceased. 17th March, 1747." [Original Petitions And Papers Filed in the County Court. 1745-1748]

Bovd, John Davis." Even though we have not seen the land record itself, we know from a variety of records that John Young had land in the Beverley Patent on Back Creek. The question is, what happened to the land after John's death? I believe the land was divided among his heirs-at-law, in other words, his brothers James, Robert, and Hugh Young. This would explain why they all acquired adjoining land on Back Creek on 27/28 February 1749 -- shortly before the final accounting in John Young's estate. In fact, the deed to Robert Young actually refers to the land as "part of John Young's land in Beverley Manor on Back Creek."

*Chalkley's III, Page 282: Deed Book 2 Page 638.--27th February, 1749. The abstracted deeds to James and Hugh Young do not contain the same explicit language about John Young's land, but that language may be in the original deeds.

Although it seems odd that William Beverley was the grantor on the deeds if the land actually belonged to John Young, there are several other deeds for the same period that do the same thing. One involves the land in the estate of Patrick Cook, the husband of Jane Young Cook, the probable sister of John, James, Hugh and Robert Young:

*Chalkley's III, page 284: Deed Book 2, Page 686.'97 1st March, 1749. Same [William Beverley] to Jean [Jane] Cook, widow, and John and Mary Cook, minors (the whole contains 802 acres), 2/3 of 2 tracts in one place, and to John Cook the remainder of the other third sold to Jane Cook, widow, during her life, according to will of Patrick Cook, her late husband. 1748, in Augusta'97 Nathan Lusk's line; John McCutchin's line. Teste: James Lockhart, Robt. Young. ---One likely explanation is that John Young and Patrick Cook (et al.) had not paid off the land when they died and that money was still owed to William Beverley. As a result, the heirs/beneficiaries had to pay off what was due on the land to get clear title from Beverley." (end of quoted email from Janice McAlpine) The last mention of John Young we have in the records is at the end of this 1802 record in court testimony in Chaukley, VII.

*"Sept 1802, McPheeters vs. Moffett--Involves land conveyed to Beverley to Crockett, 26th February, 1740. Copy of deed. John Brownlee deposes in Augusta, 3d July, 1798, that he has lived where he now lives since 1st November, 1740; he has always been a member of that society, and is nearly related to John Moffett, the defendant. John Tate also deposes that he has lived where he now lives for 53 years in October last, and had been acquainted with the lands for two years before he came to live in the neighborhood. Captain Samuel McPheeters deposes at same time that he has lived in and near where he now lives since 1741. Mathew Wilson deposes at same time that he has lived near where he now lives 60 years. John Young lived on the plantation 55 years ago and upwards." (Fifty-five years ago would have been 1747.)

His death date of 1747 is usually listed as his father's death date and will instead. This is absolutely incorrect as this John Jr., son of John and Annie Houston Young, died in 1747 without having any surviving children in his will. John Jr. Young therefore, is NOT the John of Naked Creek, Virginia either. His estate went to his brothers, James, Robert, Hugh and likely sister, Jane Cooke's husband, Patrick.

    Notes:

James was married at least twice, to 2 Sarahs. He highly likely had more sons than the 3 listed here and is also likely to have been born before 1706 as estimated from the 3 known children's approximated birthdates.

He is likely to be the James Young who noted his emigration in the following 1740 records. It doesn't mean that he emigrated at that time, but it was verifying that he emigrated to be able to purchase more land. James Young, emigrated 1740, Place Augusta Co., Virginia, Source Publication Code: 3816, Primary Immigrant: Young, James, "Annotation: Legal proceedings before Orange County Court, Virginia, where settlers proved their entitlement to enter public lands. James Young had land which he was having surveyed by 1738 according to Chalkley, V 2. pg. (63) 9 ber ye 6, 1738, survey for James Young. James purchased 401 acres (possibly the same he had surveyed in 1738) in 1742 on Whistle Creek. Whistle Creek is in the southern half of Bordon's Grant and Bordon's Grant adjoined the southwest end of Beverly Grant. It was near the forks of the James River. It is about 20 miles south of where likely brothers - Hugh, and Robert lived on Back Creek starting in 1746 or 1749 respectively.

Just a bit later in court "Chaukley, Vol. 1, pg. 431, James Young's petition to administer on the estate of John Young, his brother and nearest heir, June 17, 1747." What is important about this line in Chaukley that has been previously misunderstood is that James was John's nearest heir, meaning John left no offspring or children to inherit his worldly possessions. By right of law, a man's goods went first to his children and if there were none, then his brothers would be the next in line.

He obtained additional land according to Chaukley, Vol. 3 (that was likely part of his brother John's estate) in the following record: Page 645.--28th February, 1749. Same to James Young, planter, 436 acres in Beverley Manor on Back Creek. Corner Robert Young; McFeeter's line; corner Andrew Pickens; corner Robert Campbell; corner Patrick Martin. Teste: John Wilson, John Gay.

In 1750, his neighbors are described in this Chaukley, V. 3 record: "Page 65.--29th November, 1750. Robert Campbell, Gent., to James Barrey, 149 acres in Beverley Manor, adjoining Glebe land; Wm. Martin's corner, Middle Br. Shanandoe; corner James Young; corner to a graveyard. Teste: David Stewart, Andrew Cowan, John Mitchell. In this same source and same year, James' son Matthew sells land he had obtained from his father: Page 160.--4th January, 1750. Mathew Young and Agness to Peter Wallace, 150-1/2 acres. Bought by James Young from Borden, recorded in Orange and conveyed by James to Mathew. On Whistle Creek of James River; corner to Low Todd. Teste: Joseph Lapsley, Richard Woods." This gives us an estimate on Matthews age as being born before 1730 if he was at least 21 at the time.

In 1753 court records, James is the James Young, Bordens land in the Clerk of Courts fee books. Another Chaukley record lists more of James' neighbors: Page 179.--23d March, 1754. John McPheeters to Wm. Martin, 198 acres, part of land Jno. now possesses. Cor. John McPheeters in James Young's line; cor. Robert Campbell's land, now James Berry's.

James lived within a few miles of a William Young whom owned a 100 acres which he purchased in 1756. This William was Sharon Jebavy's ancestor. He could be a son of either of the two early brothers who did not leave a will, namely this James or Hugh Young who both lived in Augusta Co., Virginia by 1738 and 1749 respectively. Their location was in Borden and Beverly Manor which was a few miles over the border from the property of William Young.

James's neighbors around Whistlestop Creek included at a later date, Charles Boyle, Saml & John McMurtrey, Samuel Todd, John Summers and James Davis. James Young sold 251 acres to Lou Todd in 1756 that bordered on his son, Matthew's land. Chaukley, Vol 3, "Page 744.--James Young, miller, to Lou Todd, carpenter. Delivered: William Todd, 16th May, 1756, 251 acres Fork of James, on Whistle Creek where Todd now liveth; corner Mathew Young. Teste: Arthur and Abraham Brown, James McCown." In that same year, James and Sarah Young, Patrick (his other son) and Isabella Young sold 110 acres, including the mill to Andrew Hall.

James died in the first half of 1760. "Chalkley's VIII, page 57, Will Book 2, Page 371.- 20th May, 1760. William Shannon's bond (with John Brown, Hugh Young giving surety) as administrator of James Young." "Chalkley's VIII, page 60, Will Book 2, Page 430.- 25th July, 1760. James Young's appraisement, by John Trimble, James Pol (Paul?), Morris O'Freal." (Note: The Trimble's lived on land adjacent to James Young's land of Back Creek.)

Both James C. and his brother John were siblings of the other somewhat early Youngs in Borden Manor. John and his brother James C. lived in Augusta Co., Virginia by 1738 according to early Orange Co. road records. They are not to be confused with the James and John Young of Naked Creek, Augusta Co., VA. It's the James of Naked Creek whose daughter married George Glenn who was also of Naked Creek. That James and John were first cousins to this James and John in Borden and Beverly Manor tracts of land in Augusta Co., VA.

John's land was the land located off Back Creek in Beverley Manor and James' land was the land located off Whistle Creek in the Borden track. To quote Janice McAlpine in email dated Jan. 14, 2010: "Their property was mentioned in an early survey book, "Hume's Old Field Book." This book was submitted as evidence in the case of Moffett vs. McPheeters (1799) in the Staunton District Court and remained in the case file for generations. The survey book is excerpted in Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement of Virginia; Vol 2, at pages 370 et seq., with the Young entries at Chalkley's pages 372 and 375. As can be seen from the survey information, John Young's land was on Back Creek. The location of James Young's land was not specified.*Chaukley (27) May 11th, 1738, survey for Ja(mes) Givins, beginning at John (see 29) Young, beginning at Tumble's Cor., Back Kreek. Sam. The following two Orange Co. road orders show that John Young's land was in the Beverley Patent, which is where Back Creek was located. James Young's land was in the Borden Patent, where Whistle Creek is located. *Orange County Road Orders 1734-1749, Ann Brush Miller, Virginia Highway & Transportation Research Council, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1984, revised 2004, online at http://www.virginiadot.org/VTRC/main/online_reports/pdf/85-r2.pdf*Page 39: "Book 2, Orange County Court Order Books 28 June 1739, O.S. p. 3 John Poage, David Davis and George Hutchison having according to an Order of Court viewed and laid off a road from Beverley Manner and made return of their proceedings to Court its ordered that the said road be cleared according to the Report made by said Viewers vizt That the said road be cleared from John Youngs at the North Mountain to the Top of the blue ridge to the bounds of Goochland County." *page 89: "27 November 1742, O.S. p. 304 On the petition of the Inhabitants of Bordens Tract for a road from where James Young lives on ye sd Bordens Tract to ye Gapp in the blue ridge of Mountains commonly called Michael Woods Gap Its ordered that the said road be cleared from the sd Youngs through the timber Grove from thence to ye foot of ye Mountain Leaving Patrik Campbells to ye northward continuing an Easterly Course so on ye south Side on ye south river to Samuel Davis' plantation thence to ye Gapp of ye Mountains And its further ordered that Francis McCowen Saml: Walker Captn John Buchannan Patk Hays Charles Campbell and Captn John Christian be hereby appointed Overseers of ye said road And that Colo James Patton be desired to lay off for each Overseer his precinct & Men to clear each precinct on ye sd road."

(The earliest that John and James could have been in Beverly and Borden was likely in 1737. Beverley got his grant of land in 1736. Borden received his initial grant about the same time with a promise of 100,000 additional acres if he brought 100 settlers into his part of Orange Co., Virginia. Beverley and Borden immediately began enticing and selling their Virginia territories to the Scots in Northern Ireland. They offered reasonably priced transportation for the settlers. A Captain James Patton set up a route and made 25 round trips taking tobacco and pelts to England and Ireland and returning with Scots-Irish settlers for these business men, Borden and Beverley. Borden offered 100 acres of land free to anyone who would settle and build a cabin. He made his money when they wanted additional acres. Later, he offered land deals to entice settlers to move to the Borden patent rather than remaining in Beverley's.

Of our two relatives, John would have bought his land and James' Borden land would have been at least in part free.) Janice McAlpine suspects they actually didn't receive their patents until the property was paid for. So it is possible that someone like John Young could have moved onto his land about 1738 and had a survey done, but still didn't have a clear title (patent) to the land when he died. That could explain why his name is missing from the early patent lists." To continue quoting her email: "There is no indication that James Young acquired land in the Beverly Patent before February 1749. Prior to that time, records place him on Whistle Creek in the Borden Patent, with an additional land acquisition there in 1747: *Chalkley's III, page 267: Circuit Court Will Book 2, Page 479.--- 18th March, 1747.

To keep the land he had to pay 1 shilling per year on the day of the feast of the Arch Angel Michael for 3 years and improve 3 acres out of every 50 acres of land within 3 years. If he could not keep these agreements the grantors had the right to sell the land to someone else. http://lva1.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/F/19RE57QF4S1HHSNL3TIUJ6RD8564B8IEBUPDS8IDKQ2ALQ3VGX-61016?func=full-set-set&set_number=006012&set_entry=000002&format=999"

Robert is in a list of the earliest settlers of Beverley Manor where he purchased 373 acres on Jun 7, 1742. He had several land purchases in fact. Four hundred acres at the head of north branch of Buffalo Creek, bordering on Borden's land was purchased in 1747 from William McMachan, Gentleman of Fredrick Co. This appears to be the same land mentioned above that he got a patent for in 1740 and then finally purchased in 1747.

He is listed as receiving land that was part of his brother, John's land in this Chaukley Vol 3 record: Page 638.--27th February, 1749. to Robert Young, planter (farmer) part of John Young's land in Beverley Manor (234 acres) on Back Creek. Corner to Hugh Young and John Trimble; corner William McPheeters; corner James Young. Teste: Thomas Stewart and Charles Dalhouse.

He also obtained 530 acres respectively on Feb 28, 1749 for which he received Patents in that same year. Chaukley, V. 3, Page 642.--28th February, 1749. Same to same, 550 acres whereon he now lives. In Beverley Manor whereon Robert now lives. Corner in his former survey; corner William McClintock; corner Hugh Young; John Browne's line. It should be noted that there were several Roberts and at least one other Robert Sr. in Augusta Co, VA at the same time as this Robert Sr. and some of the facts below could belong to them instead. The other Robert Sr. lived on the Forks off James River by 1755.

According to Robert Frey he is the Robert who had two indentured servants, William Sanford and Margaret McGaffey. Margaret filed a complaint against her "white haired" master in the 1740's.

If accurate, then he is the following Robert in Chalkley: "page 29 Robert Young, white haired, (April, 1745/6), Chancery suit vs. Borden". In that same record there is a 2nd Robert Young delineated who lived near the Courthouse. There is a third Robert listed who lived on the North Forks (which is the other Robert Sr. who moved with his family to Tennessee sometime after 1776. These were all from a list of Clerk records where clerks listed distinguishing characteristics of persons involved in the payment of fees.)

He was a part of Richard Wood's Co. in the militia in 1745 and 1746. He was named Constable in that same time period. That meant that he would hear minor cases in business and conduct in the courts. He gained the position of "Captain, Troop of Horse" for the militia on Aug. 21, 1752.

He and his sons and brother Hugh were part of a group of his neighbors that were to help build a road. "May, 1753. Road established from Brown's bridge to the Glebe land, and Robert Campbell and John Trimble be surveyors, and with James Lusk, pg. 443, they clear and keep the same in order. We do appoint Robert Campbell and John Trimble overseers from John Brown's bridge to the Gleve House and the undernamed persons to clear the same: James Lusk, Robert Roberson, Samuel McCuchen, William Hunter, James Hunter, Robert Campbell's man, Mathew Wilson, William Wilson, John Wilson, Jr., John McCleery, James McCleery, Thomas Kirkpatrick and son, John Peevy, James Clarck, John Clarck, James Clark, Jr., Jacob Lockhart, James Lockhart, John Birtly, Josias Richards, William Marten, George Berry, William McFeeters, John McFeeters, William McFeeters, Jr., John Jameson, Patrick Marten, Joseph Marten, William Ward, Moses O'Freel and his man, Robert Philips, Robert Davis, Thomas Reed, Robert Scott, John Vance, Andrew Foster, William Bell, Alexander McKiney, John Speer, Abraham Mathan (Mashaw), Robert Young, John Young (son of Robert), Samuel Young, (son of Robert) Hugh Young (brother of Robert?) and his man, John Campbell, George Peevy, Robert McClenan, William Eackry, James Bell, Andrew Steel and his man, John McKiney, Patrick McCloskey, John McSlenan, John McCuchan, Samuel McCuchan, William McClintock, Thomas Peevy, James McCuchen, Duncken McFarlen.

Robert entered into a bond with Hugh Spier of Orange Co. in Aug., 1740, but something was amiss as Mr. Spier sued him over it in 1754 and 1756. On Mar. 18th, 1755, he divided his homestead at Beverley Manor between his sons. Chalkley V. 3: Page 497.--15th March, 1755. According to Chalkley, John was involved with a lawsuit shortly thereafter. According to this MARCH, 1758 (B) Chaukley record. *April 28, 1756.--This day Mathew Edmoston, Constable, made oath before me, Patrick Martin, and, that by virtue of an execution, and , versus the estate of John Young, and, he seized the goods of said John Young and by violent force they were forceably taken and rescued from him by Robert Young, Sr., and his wife, Agnes. (Signed) Pat. Martin. This does not necessarily indicate that John had passed at that moment in time. Attorney Janice McAlpine theorizes that his son had given some of his personal estate to his father for safe keeping from a lawsuit he was involved in and that the sheriff was not able to get John's personal estate from Robert Young, Sr. to pay the debt that Patrick Martin believed he had.
In Chalkley he might have been the following Robert: Page 160.-- (1757?) Robert Young and James Davis, on north east side of Buffelow Creek and up the North River to the Mountain. This record in Chalkley likely applies to this Robert Young and his sons. Page 290.--1760: Processioned by _____ ? _____: For Robert Hamilton, ... for Robert Young, for James Young, for Samuel Young, for Hugh Young ... Processioned meant that the land was accounted for every 4 years in the Parish. He is likely the Robert who appeared in this 1760 Chaukley, V. 3 record: Page 749.--31st March, 1760. Robert Young to Wm. Todd, 400 acres on North Br. of Buffalo Creek, Benj. Borden's line.

According to Chalkley, our Robert Sr. died in 1762. This is supported by Orphans court records. On May 20, 1762, Robert Young, age 18, son and orphan of Robert Young, chose (brother) James Young to be his guardian. The next day, James became his official guardian when he, brother Samuel and Joseph Hannett gave bond to the court. James also took guardianship of two other brothers, William and Hugh, on Aug 21, 1764. This time bond was given by James with 2 John Youngs, a Robert Young and John Kirkpatrick.

Agness is listed as the late wife of Robert Young in a May 28, 1765 court case vs. John Brown for Writ of dower. In Oct 1769, she released her dower in order that her son James could sell some land. Agness died sometime after Jun 20, 1770 when the case against John Brown was dropped because of his death. (CL-468) According to Sharon Young Jebavy, she and five or six of her sons removed to Laurens Co., South Carolina after this last written record found about her on land she had bought in 1766. (CL-541)

    Notes:

It is theory on my part that John Young is the brother of James and Robert Young, all of Naked Creek. John appears in Naked Creek first. He interacts with James or his son-in-laws in some wills of the time. We do know that they are the ones that interacted with each other in Naked Creek instead of interacting with other Youngs in the Borden and Beverly tracts of land.

John purchased 135 acres of land in the drafts on Naked Creek on Dec. 14, 1748 according to Survey Book 1, pg. 29. (Young, John. Publication 12 July 1750., available on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41, Location: Augusta County. Description: 135 acres on the drafts of Naked Creek. Source: Land Office Patents No. 30, 1750-1752, p. 226, Reel 28). This land was an original land grant from the person given the tract by George II of Great Britain, France and Ireland. It bordered on land owned by James Bell and John Rutledge. The deed said that he had to pay for it once a year for 3 years at the Feast of the Arch Angel Michael. The sale was for 15 pounds. He also had to apparently improve 3 acres of each 50 acres of land purchased within a 3-year period to be able to keep the land as his own. (http://lva1.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/F/VSAXVCB1DDR2XCUGC5I2BF3Y92HQI6A3GXXUVU52HQDLXLRHDF-29549?func=full-set_number=005837set_entry=000158format=999)

He purchased an additional 50 acres adjoining his land in 1751 on page 44 of that same book. He then sold 335 of these acres to James Young in 1759: Chaukley, V. 3, Page 122.--16th May, 1759. John Young and Elizabeth ( ) to James Young, \'a3 30, 2 tracts containing 335 acres on a branch of Naked Creek, 200 acres conveyed to John by Hugh Campbell, 18th May, 1749, and 135 acres patented to John, 12th July, 1750, near corner of James Bell and John Rutledge. Erwin's land. Teste: James Gambel. The James Young was probably his son James who was old enough to pay fees to the court in the following 1759 record.

Johns son's James and Robert are listed as his sons in the following Chalkley record, V.II. They were listed in the fee books by the Clerk of Court in 1759 and distinguished from other James and Roberts of the time by the name of their father. *page 35, James Young, son of John; page 36, Robert Young, son of John. There was another James Young delineated in these Clerk of Court records in 1760 as James Young, tailor, that would not be the son of this John. I am estimating James and Robert's ages from this record. They likely would have been at least 18 at the time.

The following info is currently listed verbatim from my site in the Lamont/Young DNA Study on the internet at http://www.lamont-young.com.) In Deed Book 2, pg 189, 1749 the following info is listed: "Hugh Campbell to John Young, Naked Creek, part of 400 ac pat 1740 to Campbell." On Mar. 10, 1748-49, William Curry bought 200 acres of land near John Young and Thos. Waterson, on Naked Creek.

William Curry's son Robert and grandchildren were witnesses to James Young's will, an obvious relative and contemporary of John.

Excerpts from Chalkley supplied by Sharon Young Jebavy that might apply to this John are as follows.

His son John wrote a will in 1780 when he went off to join the Rev. War in which he names his male siblings, some nephews, and likely brother-in-laws named Robert and possibly George King and John Steffey. Unfortunately, we do not know which of John Sr.'s daughters married which.

    Notes:

We do not know who the parents of James, John or Robert Sr. of the Naked Creek, Augusta Co., Virginia are with certainty. I have my theory based upon 40 years of research and the only first-hand evidence there is.

Naked Creek appears to be about 22 miles northeast of the Beverly Manor Plat with the Borden Manor area being in between the 2 though this is a guess based upon a composite of maps that I could be judging incorrectly. Naked Creek literally is on the border between Rockingham County and Augusta Co., Virginia.

We do know that DNA evidence absolutely shows that my James Young is related to John and Annie Houston. He is likely a nephew of them.

As for the subject of this biography, James of Naked Creek, Augusta Co., VA. We know he interacted with John's children of Naked Creek. John bought land in 1748 on Naked Creek, Augusta Co., and James came from Cecil Co., MD in 1768 to buy land nearby John. We also know that my James is too young to have been the son of John and Annie as he is believed to have fought in the American Revolution from his possible gravestone. Nor is James the likely son of John and Annie's sons Robert (not in will) or Dr. John (died without heirs). James isn't the son of James C. Young. James C. had a son James, but his son James definitely died in the early 1760's. This James on Naked Creek died in 1790. My current best theory is that James and peer, John, both of Naked Creek, are nephews of the early (1730-1740's) Youngs in Augusta County.

It is possible that this James Young was the one in 1760 who was delineated by the Clerk of Courts as James Young, "Taylor." We don't know which one was the tailor at this point in time other than we know it wasn't his possible nephew or 1st cousin, once removed named James. He might be Constable James in the following record from Chalkley, V. II: 1767--Constables: Fras Graham, Jno. Griffith, Jos. Dennis, Thos. Cartmil, Solomon Carpenter, Wm. Jemmison, Jno. Clark, Charles Campbell, Wm. McMullen, Wm. Paxton, Hugh Hicklin, James Young.

His most likely land purchase is in the following Chaukley V. 3 record: Page 164.--22d November, 1769. Samuel Black and Rebecca ( ) to James Young, of Sissel County, Maryland, (Cecil Co., MD) ? 90, 200 acres on a branch of Naked Creek conveyed to Samuel by Thomas Watterson, James McConnal's land. James is listed as being of Cecil Co., MD in 1769 when he purchased land on Naked Creek, Augusta Co., Virginia. His likely brother, John had moved there in 1748.

There is a well-researched theory by Katherine Bushman. According to her, Cecil Co., MD Youngs are almost non-existant meaning that it was a stopover before moving onto Augusta Co., VA. There is a Jacob and John Young there in 1748. A William Young is a bondman in 1756 there. A Robert Young bought goods in Cecil Co., MD in 1758 and a James Young is also only mentioned once in that region. All of these but Jacob are believed to be relatives of the Youngs in Augusta Co., Virginia or Youngs that moved to Augusta Co., Virginia. Of these, William (son of Andrew Lamont Young) is my best theory on the parent of James and John.

He is the James Young in the following Chalkley transcription from Volume 3, "Page 546.--6th December, 1774. Thomas Watterson's will, farmer--To wife Mary to Nevey William Watterson. Executors, wife Mary and James Bell. Teste: James Young, Elizabeth (mark) McCamas, George Glenn. Proved, 17th February, 1778, by Young and Glenn. Widow Mary qualifies.

James's Young's will in Augusta Co., VA, Will Book VII, pg. 292, are in this abstract by Dr. Robert Frey. "16 Nov 1790: To Agnes Miller, wife to Wert Miller, daughter to George Glenn; to James Glenn, son to George Glenn; to William Glenn, son to George Glenn; to Sarah Glenn, daughter to George Glenn; to Martha Glenn, daughter to George Glenn; to Hugh Glenn, son to George Glenn; to Mary Glenn, daughter to George Glenn, infant; to Margaret, Esther, Elizabeth, Martha, John, James, William Bing, children to John Bing; to son-in-law George Glenn, to son-in-law John Bing, executors. Teste: Robert Young, Jr; Robert Young, Sr.; Sarah Young (Wife or daughter of Robert Young?). Proved 21st December 1790, by all witnesses. George Glenn (Son-in-law) and Wm. Young [son of Robert Young Sr. or gr. nephew]"

Most of his witnesses are one or two generations younger than James indicating again that he was quite elderly at the time of the writing of his will. James Young apparently only bequeathed items to grandchildren of two daughters. (CL-185) (Note that these Glenn grandchildren are listed in the identical order in Hugh Glenn's family bible and that Mary was simply age 12 at the time. Her brother Hugh Glenn, age 16, was not named an infant.) (CL-185) It's likely that his second wife had died by the time he wrote his will. Since he gave household goods to the Glenn children, it also suggests that he could have been living with them at the time of the writing of his will. Because James named no son in his will, it is assumed that he had no sons. I wouldn't rule that out however, as many Young's from this area had started moving to other territories like Kentucky and Tennessee by 1790 when he wrote his will and James died well enough into old age that he could have had a son die previously to him. The people who witness James' will all lived on or near Naked Creek, Augusta Co., VA when he wrote it. They would be his relatives. Namely, Robert Sr. Young could be a brother to him, possible son of William Young or Robert Young of Cecil Co., MD and Naked Creek, Augusta Co., VA. and his possible sister-in-law or niece, Sarah. Robert Jr. Young would be Robert Sr.'s son. When Robert Young Sr. died and left a will in 1793, he names George Glenn (James' son-in-law) as his executor.

I am theorizing that William Young of Cecil Co., MD is the father of our James Young because of the following record in Chalkley. "*Bond by William Young, of Cecil County, Province of Maryland, to James Hettly, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, dated 29th April, 1756, assigned to James Young, 28th February, 1775." This suggests that William Young had died, and the bond he had posted for James Hettley was transferred to the responsibility of his eldest living son, James in 1775. In decades of searching, this is the only connection I have found for our James of Cecil Co., MD and Naked Creek, Augusta Co. to the previous generation. William was the son of Andrew Lamont Young. This would explain the DNA matches I have to Andrew Lamont Young via his son, John Young married to Annie Houston. It seems likely to me that our James of Naked Creek is the likely brother to John of Naked Creek also and the Robert Young Sr. who witnessed his will. John, James and Robert would be sons of William in this hypothesis.

According to "Augusta County Heritage Book", James died on Dec. 21, 1790 and was in the American Revolution as stated on his gravestone.

This record applies to him in Chaukley, Vol. 2, Page 427.--James Young's estate appraised 8th January, 1791.

Here are the other Chaukley Records that might apply to this James Young.

Samuel was of very poor intellect and quite an idiot. Joseph died and left will dated 11th September, 1757, wherein he gave a part of his land "The Welch Cabin" unto Samuel. Notes:

It is my theory that William is the son of William of Cecil Co., MD. He is suing William, Samuel, and James Anderson as well as George Glenn for not paying him 18 lbs that they each owed him in 1791. George Glenn was of Naked Creek. I am assuming they all were. In May of 1792 when this case was still going on, his witnesses that supported his cause were William Curry, John and Jane Blair. William Young did not attend because he was aged and unable to. This last statement is what suggests he was at least of John and James Young's age of Naked Creek and a probable brother or cousin.
